He has assembled the facts of life concerning NARS with the aid of detailed memoranda from the acting archivist, who has unobtrusively injected between the lines some much-needed advice. The Laurens Papers will publish its last traditional, hot type volume about fifteen months from now. With the publication of volume 9 in February 1981, the project will have completed an almost comprehensive edition of Lauren's papers prior to the Revolution. Yet these nine volumes contain only one-third of the Laurens papers. Another eight thousand· documents remain to be published. The initial publication plan developed in the 1960s called for a series of highly selected volumes to cover the Revolution and later periods. Without trying to explain away an error that gross, we can only say that it is the kind of error that occurred only once, and occurred in spite of our editorial method rather than because of it. Most of the other outright errors were less egregious: misspelled names; failure to annotate at it appeared in the original, though we doubt that history was changed by the omission of that particular punctuation. We would still continue to correct obvious typographical errors in typewritten or printed documents. Maybe a type does reveal something deeply hidden, but is it deeply hidden in the …

The system which I described in the opening part of my paper at Princeton was one in which the central computer is used primarily for the storage and manipulation of files. We now have a National Endowment for the Humanities grant that supports the development of a new series of programs which will allow us to automatically encode our computer files for typesetting. We have done further testing of this concept, and a report on those tests appears below.

The tenth annual Institute for Historical Editing will take place 19-31July 1981, in Madison, Wisconsin. Jointly sponsored by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the University of Wisconsin- Madison, and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, the institute provides theoretical and practical instruction in documentary editing. Applicants should hold a master's degree in history or American civilization. A limited number of full and partial study grants are available. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission also announces the 1980-1981 competition for fellowships in historical editing.

The present level of reviewing for our editions is, to my mind, lower than that of the editing itself. Leave aside the occasional critics, high priests of ipsissima verba, who bemoan our textual impurities; look at the average, run-of-the-mill review. It normally contains a paragraph of mild praise for the editing, a paragraph on what the editee, if there is such a word, was doing in the period covered (this can often be written from the jacket blurb), and a paragraph that points out a few errors or, for lack of them, challenges a few specific editorial comments. During this first year the ADE Newsletter has been, like all efforts, a bit untidy. We have probably paid too little attention to some important aspect of documentary editing. It seems to me that our rapid growth as an organization proved that the regular journals are not meeting our demands, but it may be too ambitious to aspire to publication of a regular journal. Perhaps subsidies for books dealing with the editorial process would be a better way to spend our funds.
