The preceding eight volumes covered Morris's career as the country's "Financier" -in fact the actual prime minister of the early Confederation-through his official diaries, letter books, and ancillary correspondence. Morris went into office with an ambitious agenda, and the earlier volumes amply chronicle his attempts to put his plans into effect. Believing that few citizens are disinterested patriots, Morris thought, as Hamilton did, that the best way to attach them to the new government was through self-interest. Tumultuous and momentous events occurred in the United States between 1865 and 1873. Dominating the political arena was the end of the nation's bloody civil war and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, followed by the struggle over Reconstruction and the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. In the middle of this ferment stirred the impressive figure of Salmon P. Chase, who served as chief justice of the Supreme Court from 1864 to 1873.

The following recently discovered document sheds important light not only on the underlying causes of the American Revolution but also on the relatively unexplored, but nonetheless vital, history of grant making. The document is what is called in grants biz a "questions letter," one of the many ways in which grants analysts attempt to help applicants.

One of the joys of documentary editing is the opportunity to watch stories unfold in the documents. Thus, it is not surprising to see academic and trade presses publishing works aimed at a popular audience that rely heavily on historical texts. In the past several decades, documentary editors have done a remarkable job in creating standards, although most of their energies have focused on scholarly editions. When Benjamin Franklin left Philadelphia for France in October 1776, he took along his sixteen-year-old grandson, William Temple Franklin, who would remain in Paris, serving as his secretary, for the entire eight-and-a-half-year mission. Also in tow was another grandson and Temple's cousin, Benjamin Franklin Bache. Benny, as he was usually called, was born in August 1769. No letters survive to indicate why Benny, who had just turned seven, was being sent abroad. Caroline Healey Dall(1822-1912), Boston born reformer, lecturer, author of books, freelance journalist, memoirist, and occasional preacher, began her apprenticeship as a writer at the age of nine with the keeping of a journal. While still a child, however, she destroyed her earliest journal when she discovered her father reading it. For some time thereafter, she ceased her journal keeping. But soon finding herself unable to quell the need to express herself on paper, she resumed the habit. The journals of this second period, which ran for several years, survived until Dall was in her seventies. Then she also destroyed them, …

Only the day before, he had led two hundred Vermont and Massachusetts militiamen to capture the British fortress of Ticonderoga in what some consider the colonists' first offensive action of the Revolutionary War. Explorations In Class And Gender In The Old South: Review Of The Confessions Of Edward Isham: A Poor White Life Of The South, Ed. Charles C. Bolton And Scott P. Culclasure., James M. Denham

The two lives depicted in these accounts represent two dramatically different versions of life in the Old South. As the privileged daughter of a well-to-do slaveholder, Cornelia Jones Pond of Liberty County, Georgia, encountered. none of the hardships and experiences of Edward Isham-who represented a class of people that contemporaries and historians have labeled "poor white." Pond's world was a place of supportive parents, balls, dashing suitors, and loyal servants. Edward Isham's world, on the other hand, was one of bad whiskey, knives, firearms, and poverty. Their lives offer two striking contrasts of white experiences in the antebellum South.

An important primary source for Cherokeer culture, the Brainerd Journal: A Mission to the Cherokees, 1817-1823, is composed of notes written almost daily by two New England missionaries, Cyrus Kingsbury and Ard Hoyt. Their contribution to Cherokee history is valuable because, other than government accounts that parallel this same era, little literature survives about these crucial years preceding forced removal in 1838-39.
