Mientras las reglas de censura oficiales desaparecieron con el fin de la dictadura, sus rasgos permanecían, en términos de la vida social, además del cine. La influencia de Franco en el cine determinaba que los conceptos de la masculinidad y la feminidad no tenían espacio para interpretación. This dissertation analyzes the representations of immigrants from North Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe in Spain. As engaged scholarship, it seeks to better the portrayal of immigrants in the mass media through the study of literature, film, and music about immigration spanning from the year 2000 to 2016. Because misconceptions continue to propagate in the media, this dissertation works to counteract anti-immigrant, xenophobic representations as well as balance out overly positive and orientalized portrayal of immigrants with a call to recognize immigrants as human beings who deserve the same respect, dignity, and rights as any other citizen.

During the period of military government in Argentina, Brazil (1964 –1982) and the present day communist Cuban regime, a machinery of cultural repression was established in these countries, these states had a systematic plan of cultural repression of any kind of opposition, dictatorships had an organized and sophisticated operating control over the press and all publications. The dissident writers examined in this dissertation developed strategies of resistance that depended largely on allegory to carry their messages against their respective oppressive regimes. Drawing on the testimonial character of the memory of Spanish exile of 1939, this project contributes to the study of cultural memory, in dialogue with other scholars who examine memory in contemporary works. It focuses on the intersection of exile and memory, and demonstrates that cultural memory means a connection between collective and individual memories. The three primary works examined in this project are conceived before, during and after each author’s exile respectively, thus, they together give a comprehensive view of the massive exile of 1939: Ramón J. This paper analyzes a short story by the 17^th-century Spanish author María de Zayas. In Her Lover’s Slave, Zayas’s protagonist Isabel Fajardo is raped and decides to transform into a Moorish slave woman in order to pursue her rapist throughout the Mediterranean and avenge her honor. I examine the effect of this transformation on Isabel, a Christian noblewoman who is subject to the restrictive honor code of early modern Spain, as well as the effect on her Spanish audience. I argue that Isabel’s tale sends didactic messages to early modern and contemporary readers, messages that promote solidarity among …

This article calls attention to the recent appearance of Don Quixote in the "real world" of economics, business management, and leadership development as a new, but mostly unnoticed chapter in the reading history of Cervantes's work. This article explores the articulation of exile identity in the novel Sola by María José de Chopitea published in Mexico in 1954. Until now, critics have approached this text as lacking ideological argument. I propose an alternative reading of the novel as an ideologically charged narrative that articulates the nation beyond state borders and in terms of a transatlantic bond between Mexico and the Spanish Republic. Sola creates space in the nation for Catalan female writers who were previously excluded due to both their gender and their status as political exiles and cultural minorities.

Para una perspectiva teórica del feminismo interseccional, analizo tres obras subversivas sobre la época franquista/posfranquista hacía la transición hacia la democracia en España. Este análisis interseccional toma en cuenta la variedad de factores que contribuyen a la discriminación que afronta una persona. Las obras analizadas son dos novelas (Las hogueras de Concha Álos y Las edades de Lulú de Almudena Grandes) y una película (El Calentito de Chus Gutiérrez). Estos tres trabajos revelan las expresiones de la sexualidad de las mujeres que vivieron durante estos períodos y demuestran un cambio significativo en el discurso sexual español.

In the literary works of Carlos Fuentes, transcendence of spatial-temporal reality is driven by the protagonists' desires. As a result, a multifaceted perspective of love is presented in the midst of moral conflicts and ambiguous endings. This study examines the roles of love and the instances of transcendence in nine of Fuentes' stories. In doing so, it establishes the connection between love and transcendence in these works, considers the implications of these connections, and identifies distinctions between six modes of transcendence that Fuentes employs. Este trabajo pretende insertar en el contexto humanista de su tiempo la escritura poética de Isabel Rebeca Correa, erudita portuguesa del siglo XVII que residió en Ámsterdam. Aunque no se conserva buena parte de su obra, podemos conocer el estilo de la autora a través de su traducción al español de El pastor Fido, tragicomedia pastoril de Guarini. Se incluye por primera vez una transcripción completa y modernizada de los fragmentos de dicha versión que, según la traductora, proceden de su propia inventiva. This project focuses on the cultural transformation taking place in Spain in the period between 1962 and 1976, examined through the works of filmmaker Jordi Grau (Barcelona, 1930). This research invites the opportunity to assemble a cultural study that includes subjects such as national identity, realist film aesthetics, avant-garde films, and horror films. In addition, it observes some of Grau’s work in conjunction with gender studies and pop culture.

This dissertation analyses the origin and evolution of the war narrative that was unleashed between the years 1980 and 2000 in Peru against the terrorist groups Shining Path and the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA). My thesis is that the internal war novel is a resulting genre whose precursor was the pro-indigenista novels from the last decades of the 20th Century. This dissertation examines the fantastic in the work of the Chilean author José Donoso (1924-1996). My thesis is that Donoso’s invocation of the fantastic in these narratives, subverts social constructs and power structures, specifically those associated with identity and sexuality. Via textual analysis, I argue that narratives such as “Santelices” (1956), El obsceno pájaro de la noche (1970), El jardín de al lado (1981), Naturaleza muerta con cachimba (1990), El lugar sin límites (1971), and Lagartija sin cola (2007) invite us to rethink how we see ourselves as we interact with his characters, often portrayed as tormented souls in hellish …

This dissertation examines new ways to think about postdictatorial memory, subjectivity, and cultural production. I explore memory discourses after the most recent military dictatorship in Argentina, compiled in three novels: El fin de la historia by Liliana Heker, La casa de los conejos by Laura Alcoba, and Diario de una princesa Montonera -110% verdad- by Mariana Eva Perez. My research concentrates on the possibility of postdictatorial cultural production being a constantly transforming space, in which the meaning of the dictatorial past is actively produced. This study shows that Aurora Bertrana’s novels subvert the traditional Bildungsroman and uses the techniques of the Novel of Female Development with (auto) biographical characteristics. The core of my analysis is in the friction, the disruption and the confrontation between the subject and the social system represented by the family, the school and the community. Bertrana’s novels underline that men, similarly to women, are under a strong pressure to adopt a specific role according to heterosexual norms. Bertrana’s work demonstrate that women writers, like men, can introduce social, cultural and political innovations and experiment with a new literature genre.
