Doing Catalan Spanish: Pragmatic Resources And Discourse Strategies In Ways Of Speaking Spanish In Barcelona, Robert Vann Dec 2015

Doing Catalan Spanish: Pragmatic Resources And Discourse Strategies In Ways Of Speaking Spanish In Barcelona, Robert Vann

Robert Vann

The last decade has seen the publication of many corpus-based studies about Spanish in Catalonia. With an emphasis on the linguistic characteristics that Spanish in Catalonia maintains or has acquired as a result of its prolonged contact with Catalan, these studies have started to catalog the lexicon, phonology and morphosyntax of Spanish in Catalonia. Relatively little attention has been dedicated, however, to the pragmatics of Spanish in Catalonia, that is, to the discourse strategies that constitute Catalan ways of speaking Spanish. The present investigation proceeds in this direction by identifying some of the pragmatic resources employed in Catalan ways of …

Verbal Agreement In The L2 Spanish Of Speakers Of Nahuatl, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Joyce Bruhn De Garavito Feb 2015

Verbal Agreement In The L2 Spanish Of Speakers Of Nahuatl, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Joyce Bruhn De Garavito

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

This paper examines the production of subject/verb agreement in the L2 Spanish of Nahuatl L1 speakers in light of the debate on whether problems with morphology are evidence for a deficit at the functional level in second language acquisition. In particular, it focuses on whether age of acquisition is the determining factor in the production of agreement, or whether quantity and quality of input are. Results show that there was no difference in the rate or type of error according to age of acquisition, but there was an important difference in rate between those participants who had little or no …

La (Des) Pluralización Del Verbo Haber Existencial En El Español Salvadoreño: ¿Un Cambio En Progreso?, Alexander Quintanilla Nov 2014

La (Des) Pluralización Del Verbo Haber Existencial En El Español Salvadoreño: ¿Un Cambio En Progreso?, Alexander Quintanilla

Alex Quintanilla

This study analyzes the pluralization of the verb haber in Salvadoran Spanish. Spanish uses the verb haber ‘to have’ for existential sentences. According to traditional grammars, existential sentences with haber are impersonal, that is, they are conjugated only in the third-person singular. However, it is common in most Spanish varieties to conjugate haber in the plural when the nominal phrase is plural. Recent studies have suggested that the pluralization of haber is an innovation in modern Spanish and that it is advancing from lower to higher classes. My study shows that on the contrary there is little evidence indicating that …

Observaciones Sobre El Estado Del Sonido Fricativo Palatal Sordo En El Español Salvadoreño., Alexander Quintanilla Nov 2014

Observaciones Sobre El Estado Del Sonido Fricativo Palatal Sordo En El Español Salvadoreño., Alexander Quintanilla

Alex Quintanilla

In this work I discuss the current situation in the Spanish of El Salvador of the voiceless fricative palatal sound. The presence of this sound in Pipil, an orginal language already spoken in El Salvador before the Spaniards arrived, favored its maintenance in Salvadoran Spanish. Since Pipil is a language in extinction, some authors believe that this sound is also disappearing in Salvadoran Spanish. However, Pipil is not the only language with this sound that influences Salvadoran Spanish. Thus, we examine the linguistic distribution of this sound in El Salvador, the possible reasons of its maintenance and its implications for …

La Efectividad De Un Modelo Metodológico Mixto Para La Enseñanza-Aprendizaje De Español Como Le - Tesis De Magister En Linguistica Aplicada, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Implications Of Implementing A Hybrid Learning Approach At The University Of Guyana, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Online learning and teaching is pervading higher education (HE) and many Universities are faced with the challenge of incorporating technology in education to meet the needs of students. The objective of this paper is to examine the implications of introducing a hybrid learning approach at the University of Guyana. A rationale has been established as to why this need is so germane. Literature has been reviewed and discussed, concerning face to face (F2F), online and blended instruction and the pertinence of these in current HE pedagogies. Special emphasis is paid to the transformative potential of blended learning to confront HE …

Producción De La Concordancia En Español Por Hablantes De Náhuatl, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo Oct 2013

Producción De La Concordancia En Español Por Hablantes De Náhuatl, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Artificial Intelligence And Error Correction In Second And Foreign Language Pedagogy, Kerwin A. Livingstone Oct 2012

Artificial Intelligence And Error Correction In Second And Foreign Language Pedagogy, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

This paper is an attempt to ascertain the suitability of computers for second and foreign language (SL/FL) error correction, especially those made by SL/FL learners. For this purpose, the handling of such errors proposed in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) literature will be examined. Subsequently the technologies capable of evaluating student output and identifying and correcting Non-Native Speaker (NNS) errors will be examined. Though it will be made quite clear that the computer cannot substitute a human being in total language processing, some strengths of artificial intelligence in partial language processing will be pointed out and their suitability for L2 error …

The Importance Of Feedback And Reinforcement In Computer Assisted Language Learning, Kerwin A. Livingstone May 2012

The Importance Of Feedback And Reinforcement In Computer Assisted Language Learning, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

A major focus of research in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) has been the identification and implementation of Feedback Strategies that facilitate student learning. Much of this research has been carried out on procedural skills teaching systems in areas such as algebra, physics or computer programming. Nonetheless, very little emphasis has been placed on studies and research on these types of strategies for language learning (Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Foreign Language). This article is an attempt to clearly establish the importance and necessity of feedback and reinforcement in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). A brief description will be given about CALL, …

Gender And Heritage Spanish Bilingual Grammars: A Study Of Code-Mixed Determiner Phrases And Copula Constructions, Elena Valenzuela, Ana Faure, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Ewelina Barski, Yolanda Pangtay, Adriana Diez Feb 2012

Gender And Heritage Spanish Bilingual Grammars: A Study Of Code-Mixed Determiner Phrases And Copula Constructions, Elena Valenzuela, Ana Faure, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Ewelina Barski, Yolanda Pangtay, Adriana Diez

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. An understanding of what leads to the possible weaknesses in the grammar of early bilinguals can contribute to our understanding of the possible causes of the apparent characteristic ‘failures’ in second language acquisition (Montrul 2008). Spanish has a gender feature for nouns (Carroll 1989) and gender agreement for determiners and adjectives. Problems with the acquisition of gender marking on the noun and/or with gender agreement are well-known in the L2 literature (Hawkins 1998; Fernández–Garcia 1999; Franceschina 2001; Bruhn de Garavito and White 2002; White …

Acquisition Of The Non-Generic Definite Article By Spanish Learners Of English As A Foreign Language, Christina Isabelli, Rachel Slough Dec 2011

Acquisition Of The Non-Generic Definite Article By Spanish Learners Of English As A Foreign Language, Christina Isabelli, Rachel Slough

Christina Isabelli

This study explains the acquisition of the non-generic uses of the English definite article the by L2 learners. Chilean university students completed a questionnaire containing deleted obligatory uses of the. in all, four identified categories showed to have different accuracy rates. Of the four categories, the one most similar to the L1 was the least difficult to acquire while the most different resulted as the most difficult. This concurs with other research and can be explained by L1 rules that are transferred to the L2. The other two categories did not show the same acquisition rate as compared to previous …
