Mass Culture As Domination Or Resistance In Latin American Narratives, Tim Robbins

Since the introduction of radio to Latin America in the 1930’s and later television in the 1950’s, mass culture has become an important and even contentious part of Latin American identity, and as such has also become an important part of Latin American narratives. In looking at the issue of mass culture, two basic approaches emerge: one can see mass culture as a force of domination or one can see it as a force of resistance. It is possible to trace these approaches through different time periods and geopolitical situations. The Mexican Onda writers, for instance, utilize the rock and …

"Rodolfo Walsh escribió sus dos únicas obras de teatro, La granada y La batalla, en 1965, cuando ya se reconocía como un intelectual de izquierda, bajo la influencia de su experiencia cubana, pero aún reticente a creer que para los países latinoamericanos era posible dar comienzo a un proyecto evolucionario liderado por grupos armados. En la tematización de las Fuerzas Armadas, Walsh llama la atención sobre el militarismo de los países latinoamericanos y usa la sátira para agudizar su crítica a tal fenómeno. Children’S Stories From Across Borders: A Contrastive Analysis Of Children’S Folk Tales In Ecuador And Appalachia, Teresa Cox
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The Appalachian region of the United States encompasses fourteen states, ranging from southern New York to northern Mississippi. Despite the thousands of miles separating the mountain region of Appalachia within the United States and the small, diverse country of Ecuador, the two areas are decisively similar in their values. These values are clearly demonstrated in the traditional children’s folk stories, passed down orally between generations, in both Ecuador and Appalachia. Having surveyed anonymous subjects in both areas, four stories from Ecuador and seven stories from Appalachia have been collected at random in order to draw on comparison and contrast of …

Dos obras de teatro de los años noventa del siglo XX, representativas de dos países, España y México, proporcionan espacios privilegiados para un estudio comparativo de la masculinidad. Esta tesis explora el género y la identidad masculina, y específicamente, la hipermasculinidad en las obras de teatro Yonquis y yanquis (1996), del español José Luis Alonso de Santos y Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda (1993), de la mexicana Sabina Berman. This project will analyze Isabel Allende's novel La casa de los espíritus and provide insight into how the novel functions as a commentary about the feminist movement in Chile during the 20th century. Though La casa de los espíritus is a work of fiction, the project will attempt to draw connections between the experiences of the female characters in the novel and the experiences of women in real life. The actions of each female character represent the struggles of real women as the attempt to subvert the oppression of the patriarchal system. Each woman in the novel attempts to …
