Hybrid Latina Chick Lit: The Expression Of Sexuality In The Works Of Alisa Valdes Rodriguez, James C. Yarberry

An examination of literary background and the expression of sexuality in The Dirty Girls Social Club by Alisa Valdes Rodriguez indicates that not only does the writing of this author further the traditions and evolution of Latina and Latin American women's literature, but it also seeks to break barriers with its forthright treatment of sexuality. In her novel, Valdes Rodriguez shows the female character as subject. Her incorporation of pop culture and chick lit themes has brought about the creation of a new "Hybrid Latina Chick Literature" that advances against sexual repression in discourse, literature and society, and that promotes …

Embedding Latin American Archives Into Library Instruction And Practice, Marisol Ramos

Being both a librarian and an archivist/curator, it is one of my jobs to find ways to embed primary sources into my library instruction. This paper discuss the ways that I have found to integrate the Latin American and Caribbean archival holdings that I manage in the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center into my library services. I will discuss briefly some of the strategies, such as digitization projects, LibGuides and Show and Tells events, that I have used to bridge my archival work with my library work to provide better services to my constituents.

Con la fi ccionalización de la vida del dictador paraguayo José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia (1766-1840) en Yo el Supremo (1973), Augusto Roa Bastos establece un espacio en el que fuentes históricas, literarias y mitológicas se mezclan y se confunden creando un personaje de carácter sobrenatural que mantiene una sutil pero fi rme relación, aún no explorada, con la novela gótica y, en concreto, con la imagen del vampiro.

Un día en la vida del salvadoreño Manlio Argueta y En el tiempo de las mariposas de la dominicana Julia Álvarez realzan las vidas y la tragedia de una familia campesina durante la Guerra Civil de El Salvador y las mundialmente conocidas hermanas Mirabal. Anxiety De La Historia: Understanding The Roots Of Spanglish In The Texts Of Junot Díaz, Kelsey A. Shanesy

In exploring Junot Díaz’s use of Spanglish, I propose that Díaz is driven by the anxiety of history—a phenomenon similar to the anxiety of influence, as articulated by Harold Bloom, but which focuses on the role of the Latino minority in this postmodern moment. I compare Díaz’s texts to Piri Thomas’s autobiography Down These Mean Streets, one of the original texts to utilize Spanglish, and Mumbo Jumbo by Ishmael Reed, a satirical novel about minority culture. Díaz’s vision of a future, Spanglish-speaking America is revealed to be the ultimate outcome of the anxiety of history’s influence on Díaz.

Después del predominio del lenguaje alegórico abierto con la experiencia de la última dictadura militar (1976-1983), a mediados de los noventa el realismo vuelve a encontrar un espacio en la narrativa argentina. Dos son los factores fundamentales de este cambio: por un lado, el agotamiento del modelo de escritura basado en el desvío hiperliterario, que desde comienzos de la década enfrentó el interés por la revisién de la historia argentina (Avellaneda 2002; Dalmaroni, 2002); por el otro, la creciente crisis social creada por la aplicación de las políticas neoliberales acordadas en el Consenso de Washington (1995), las cuales impusieron un …
