Boundaries Of Modernity: Spanish Women Writers At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Carmen Arranz

Spanish women writers that establish their literary careers early in twentieth century find themselves at an interesting historical crossroads as the world changes from an agrarian to an industrial paradigm. On one hand, this change leads to a strong current of traditionalism, to which most male writers adhere, as it offers the attractive idea of return to a pre-modern simplicity; on the other, this change opens up possibilities for social improvement and participation for those groups traditionally excluded from power. For an adult, learning a second language can be a complex and demanding task. Differences between one’s native language and the target language can contribute to the complexity of the task. One significant way in which languages can differ is the system of gender. The difference between gender in English and Spanish provides a challenge for adult native English speakers learning Spanish as a second language. "The largest changefor us in a qualitative one, to learn how to think of power in feminine terms, without resorting to masculine codes,"1 concludes a participant in "The Republic of Women," a year-long project aimed at raising consciousness around gender issues among women engaged in political and unionist activities in contemporary Argentina.
