Spanish Writing Learners’ Stances As Peer Reviewers, Emilia Illana-Mahiques, Carol Severino

This study explores the attitudes and perceptions about online peer review of 18 Spanish learners enrolled in a third-year college Spanish writing course. Students participated in peer review training, wrote a personal narrative, and completed two online peer review sessions before submitting their final narrative. Using data from questionnaires, interviews, a peer review simulation task, and the first author’s journal, this qualitative study investigates students’ approaches to peer review and the different practices they employ when commenting on their peers’ drafts. Results show that even though students receive the same training, they interpret and enact that training differently. Students position …

Este artículo analiza los usos del Imperfecto del indicativo en el español peruano amazónico, una variedad formada en situación de intenso contacto lingüístico. Típicamente el Imperfecto porta valor durativo por oposición al sentido puntual del pretérito, valor continuo en contraste al carácter delimitativo del segundo y valor indefinido en referencia a una situación pasada no específica, a diferencia del Pretérito que alude a la totalidad del evento (García Fernández, 2008; Cipria y Roberts, 2001, p. 300). This essay studies the ways in which Amazonian artist Roberto Evangelista’s art installation Ritos de Passagem served as Brazilian author Luiz Ruffato’s structural and thematic model for his revolutionary book Eles eram muitos cavalos. According to Ruffato’s interpretation, Evangelista’s installation represents a tangible, three-dimensional form that renders socioeconomic hardship and impoverishment within a consumer-ravaged society. In applying this model to Ruffato’s work of fiction, this essay aims to emphasize his focus on formal and narrative innovations within what Anne Ring Petersen defines as a “multiperspectival approach.” This approach allows Ruffato’s text to take on threedimensional volume and invite the …

In 2002, the residents of Aldeia da Luz left their village for the final time, displaced to make room for the Alqueva Dam, a massive regional hydropower and irrigation project almost half a century in the making. The Alqueva Multipurpose Project was marketed by the Portuguese government as a way to develop the impoverished region of the Alentejo and bring innovation to the agricultural sector. The village of Luz was the only physical obstacle to this goal and, therefore, its residents were dispossessed, sacrificed for the development of the greater Alentejo region. The various individual methods utilized by Hernán Cortés have been previously documented by multiple scholars. However, while the “tools” Cortés used—such as a reliance on legal precedent and religious allusions in the tradition of conquest rhetoric—to craft his narrative have been dissected, the use of those tools to create a narrative in letter format has not been discussed as much if at all by these scholars. While Cortés utilized previously established literary devices to prove his loyalty, his narrative was only as effective as it was because of his decision to place it in a literary format. Entre las obras decimonónicas dedicadas al tema de la mujer mecánica merece recuerdo el cuento español de Federico de Castro titulado “La esclava perfecta” (1872). La historia contada se ambienta en una corte de aspecto antiguo oriental, pero que constituye un mundo secundario autónomo y cerrado, dotado de su propio orden ontológico y culturalmente verosímil. Drawing from the history of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish – AATS (1926) as a normative agent, along with key linguistic instruments created by its well-known members, this research examines its role in the creation and shaping of a new academic field in which two ideological processes were key in the configuration of this disciplinary space: hispanism and panamericanism. El español peruano amazónico (EPA) es una variedad formada en intenso contacto con lenguas amerindias y en relativo aislamiento de centros urbanos de estandarización lingüística. La presente investigación ofrece una descripción del uso del diminutivo -it en EPA sobre la base de la clasificación de Reynoso 2005 y de propuestas teóricas de la gramaticalización (Traugott y König 1991), en relación a las nociones de subjetividad e intersubjetividad (Traugott y Dasher 2002, Traugott 2003, 1995). For instance, Hernán Cortés in his Cartas de Relación embodies a type of masculinity that overdetermined the lives of the Amerindian people. Centuries later, the modernismo movement headed by Rubén Darío reacted to a Latin American societal shift towards the prevalence of a materialistic culture brought about by the advent of industrial civilization. This paper analyzes the media representation of Syrian refugee women projected by the newspapers ABC, El País and eldiario.es, differentiating the nuances of the stereotyping of this group according to the ideological line of the media. The profiles obtained from this analysis are contrasted, through a triangulated research, with the imaginary of the Spanish society and the real profile of these women to elucidate the degree of concordance.

Recent critics of Jorge Luis Borges’s “The House of Asterion” (1947) have traced the author’s revisions in the original manuscript, charting his changing arrangement of information through the text. This essay investigates the information itself through structuralist and historicist theory. A structuralist reading analyzes Asterion’s worldview and shows how various narrators dock the integrity of his voice. Historicism probes aspects of religion, biology, and architecture to limn the true complexity of Asterion’s ties with society. Together, these theories reveal a trove of intricate intrigue and doubt.
