The Presence Of Don Quixote In Music, Susan Jane Flynn
The Presence Of Don Quixote In Music, Susan Jane Flynn
Doctoral Dissertations
Many musical works have been based upon Don Quixote de la Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Since the publication of the novel in 1605 (Part I) and 1615 (Part II), composers of all eras have sought to translate the story of the knight-errant into the universal language of music. The genres and the musical interpretations have varied. But the interest in Cervantes' masterpiece as a topic of musical expression has endured through nearly four centuries.
After a brief introduction to the references to music in the novel itself, selected Quixote compositions from each century are discussed in this …

Modern & Classical Languages
This collection of thirteen papers from the Seventh Colloquium on Hispanic Linguistics (1980) is the fourth published by Georgetown University. As in the three previous volumes, the reports in this one represent slightly over half of those presented. Unlike previous published proceedings, the present one deals with aspects of a single theme. Interesting hypotheses are forwarded concerning the relationship between social factors and history of Spanish language acquisition, bilingualism, and Spanish and Portuguese phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon.
Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem
Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The bulk of the critical study of Gustavo Bècquer's leyendas has dealt with the thematics, stylistics, or the folkloric motifs and origins of the individual works. Surprisingly little attention has been given to the structure or the narrative techniques used in the leyendas as a whole. The purpose of this study is to examine these structural and narrative aspects from a folkloric perspective in order to better appreciate Bècquer's blending of popular and literary art forms.
Numa And The Nature Of The Fantastic In The Fiction Of Juan Benet, David K. Herzberger
Numa And The Nature Of The Fantastic In The Fiction Of Juan Benet, David K. Herzberger
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Perhaps the most rewarding critical approach to the novels of Juan Benet is one that encompasses the irrational and seeks to reveal the mysterious— one that can be closely identified with the notion of the fantastic. The view of the fantastic developed in the present study is based on a synthetic modification of the precepts of Todorov and Rabkin, and places emphasis on the hesitation of the reader when confronted with a diametric reversal of the laws of the text. Both the literary theory and prose fiction of Benet can be closely linked to the fantastic: the former through Benet's …
Vital Space In The House Of Buendía, Nina M. Scott
Vital Space In The House Of Buendía, Nina M. Scott
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
In terms of both narrative and thematic organization, Gabriel Garcia Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude deals with tightly-closed structures. Whereas from the beginning Macondo has been interpreted in a variety of ways, critics have paid less attention to the meaning of the Buendía house itself. A close reading of the text shows that the way in which certain characters interact with the physical spaces of the house is highly symbolic and closely related to the thematic development of the entire novel. The rise and fall of the Buendía dynasty is presided over by three women, who function as the …

A Comparison Of Spanish Language Proficiency As Related To Location And Length Of Stay In A Foreign Language Environment, Karen Minnette Dawson Mckenna
A Comparison Of Spanish Language Proficiency As Related To Location And Length Of Stay In A Foreign Language Environment, Karen Minnette Dawson Mckenna
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship of Spanish language proficiency as related to location and length of stay in a foreign language environment. The participants took a Spanish diagnostic test that measures Spanish proficiency through grammar principles and then answered a questionnaire concerning their language learning experiences, location and length of stay in a Spanish language environment.
It was found that Spanish language proficiency increased with longer lengths of stay in the Spanish language environment. No conclusive data were found to support the hypothesis that those in one Spanish-speaking environment attain a higher language proficiency than those in another Spanish-speaking area. …
