New Mexico is an integral part of it...The Spanish folk heritage of the Southwest is a cultural resource that is highly important in the regional complex...My attempt here, then, has been to clarify and make available to more people one feature of this cultural heritage--the nativity plays.

It is the purpose of this study to make an attempt to treat Villagrá's historical point of view. The poem has been studied historically by several historians of the Southwest. The result of these studies will be taken up later in this investigation. A study of the epic itself has been attempted.
