Clerical Catechism In Gonzalo De Berceo’S Milagros De Nuestra SeñOra, Andrea L. Hesp

In this paper, I will argue that many of the miracles in Gonzalo de Berceo's Milagros De Nuestra Señora reflect the ecclesiastic laws drawn up by Pope Innocent III at the Fourth Lateran Council. In response to a malaise in thirteenth-century Christianity, created in part by a lack of effective central government and by the perceived threat of the Jews and Arabs, Pope Innocent III called to order the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 and marshalled bishops from all over Europe, including seventy-five percent of Spain's bishops.
The Marian stories in Milagros act as an abridged summary of the main …

This thesis examines the notion of autobiography as presented in Carmen Martin Gaite's novel El cuarto de atras. I propose that the novel is intended not to be read as a straightforward autobiography, rather, the reader is invited to consider the autobiographical elements that function on various levels within a fictional mode. Although events from the author's childhood and adolescence are included in the novel, they are recounted through the use of a fictional protagonist.
By analyzing the narratological fabric that comprises the text, I show how the framework of the fictional mode provides a background for the various …

This thesis examines four stories from Rosario Ferré's first book of short stories, Papeles de Pandora: "La muñeca menor," "Cuando las mujeres quieren a los hombres," "Amalia," and "La bella durmiente." In Papeles de Pandora, Ferré explores the portrayal of female identity by dismantling the traditional roles that are assigned to women in Puerto Rican, patriarchal society. This thesis analyzes the ways in which Ferré skillfully deconstructs and (re)constructs the identity and sense of self of her female protagonists.

With this research I locate Angeles Mastretta's novel Arráncame la vida in the Bildungsroman genre, examine the particular forces influencing the protagonist's development and gain insight into her process of identity formation. This modern Bildungsroman portrays the fate of a woman in the male dominated world of post-revolutionary Mexico. I analyze how class, gender, historical moment, psychological and cultural influences are woven into the intriguing formation of the heroine, Catalina, variously constraining or propelling her forward in her quest for development.

Clerical sexual incontinence was a prevalent satirical theme during the Middle Ages manifested by anticlerical sentiment towards reprobate clergymen and the laws that they disobeyed. This satirical genre of literature targeted not only the cleric of a small town, but bishops and cardinals who were also abusers of canon law.
The anticlerical theme originated in Western Europe in the time of Constantine when early Christianity was competing with many religions for dominance. In the fourth century, Constantine, through the Edict of Milan, granted religious tolerance to all, thus allowing Christianity to become a major religion. Clerical celibacy originated from the …

The purpose of this investigation is to examine formal and informal resources available for teaching Spanish to health care professionals mainly in the Portland, Oregon area. Seventeen different Spanish-for-health-care-professionals texts are commented on by the author, some of which are the texts used in medical Spanish language classes. The majority of the texts contain little if any instruction on cultural aspects which affect the Latino patient population's health care behaviors and decision making. The purpose of the present study is to show that the metaphor, flor, of Pre-Conquest Nahuatl literature means much more than the most widely accepted rendering of that metaphor that classic scholars such as Miguel Leon-Portilla and Angel M. Garibay have attributed to it. Typically flor is referred to as meaning poetry. The primary purpose of the present study was to compare the quality of spontaneous language samples elicited from twelve low socioeconomic, normally developing, migrant Spanish-speaking subjects by their mothers in the home and by this investigator in the clinic. The subjects ranged in age from three years, one month to six years, nine months.
