Manuel Puig Y Los Espacios Queer : Una Tercera Lectura De La Realidad, Matthew Berg
Manuel Puig Y Los Espacios Queer : Una Tercera Lectura De La Realidad, Matthew Berg
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
(Un)Faithful Renditions: Gender Dynamics In An Adaptation Of Don Gil De Las Calzas Verdes, Raul Galoppe
(Un)Faithful Renditions: Gender Dynamics In An Adaptation Of Don Gil De Las Calzas Verdes, Raul Galoppe
Department of Spanish and Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Recent stage versions of Tirso de Molina’s Don Gil de las calzas verdes have departed from traditional cape-and-sword approaches and experimented with psychological traits and gender ambiguities. Interestingly, these departures from canonical staging seem to occur more frequently among productions in English, as if translations served the liberating purpose of releasing tensions between texts and their original contexts, hence facilitating the process of adaptation. This article examines the process of adaptation for an upcoming New York production of Don Gil, written by Dave Dalton and subject of an ASTR Targeted Research Areas Grant. The new version, tentatively entitled Love’s a …

Los Hilos Históricos Y Literarios Que Unen A En El Tiempo De Las Mariposas De Julia Álvarez Y Un Día En La Vida De Manlio Argueta, Ingrid Torres
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
I picked this novel as a thesis not only because it gives an interesting picture of the life of the Buendia family but also because of its political aspects relating to Latin America and especially Colombia. It describes the Civil Wars in Colombia from 1885 to 1902 in which the liberal and conservative parties played an important role. The novel gives a fascinating account of the massacre of the banana strikers as a result o f the strike against the American United Fruit Company and the members of the Buendia family involved in it.
The Buendias’ genealogy begins with incest, …

La MatemáTica Y La TeoríA Del Conocimiento En La FiccióN De Jorge Luis Borges, Aleksandra Todorovich
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
For many of us, connecting math and literature seems very bizarre since we think that it is very hard to use numbers to express our literary thoughts. Yet, we forget that first mathematicians were philosophers (or is it the other way around?) who wanted to explain nature and events around them in simple mathematical findings. Somehow throughout human history, as our knowledge was expanding and it became increasingly harder and harder to be well rounded like the Greeks, we became specialized and detached from other sciences. Nevertheless, math stayed in the core of each new science that would branch throughout …
Ficción E Historia En Gabriel García Márquez : Cien Años De Soledad Y Vivir Para Contarla, Wilfredo VizcaíNo
Ficción E Historia En Gabriel García Márquez : Cien Años De Soledad Y Vivir Para Contarla, Wilfredo VizcaíNo
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Works of microcultural relevance are characterized by being read and valued primarily within the confines of a given culture. They sometimes do not transcend their own linguistic, geographical, and cultural borders, but rather, bestow upon a country, a territory, or in this case, an island, a sense of identity. Without these works, the cultural profile of a people would be blurred and even non-existent. Consequently, the fact that a work fails to speak to other cultural and linguistic contexts may actually attest to its literary importance. This is the case with the writings of Manuel Zeno Gandía, which lay the …

Una Escritora Ilustrada De Fines Del Siglo Xviii Y Principios Del Xix : Maria Rosa De Gálvez, Juana Bertha Laauwe
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This thesis focuses on the life and literary legacy of one of the Hispanic world’s women, María Rosa de Gálvez (1768-1806) who wrote her poetic works and lyrical compositions in the Neoclassic Period. Gálvez is the author of seven original tragic dramas, five original comedies, a collection of poems and two translations.
Since one of the many issues that concerned the Spanish Enlightenment was the abilities and rights of women, this is also included in the analysis. Gálvez’s literary works proposed a new type of woman, like the characters in her plays: strong women who protest the plight of Spanish …
Phonological Facilitation Through Translation In A Bilingual Picture-Naming Task, Paul Amrhein, Aimee Knupsky
Phonological Facilitation Through Translation In A Bilingual Picture-Naming Task, Paul Amrhein, Aimee Knupsky
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
We present a critical examination of phonological effects in a picture-word interference task. Using a methodology minimizing stimulus repetition, English/Spanish and Spanish/English bilinguals named pictures in either L1 or L2 (blocked contexts) or in both (mixed contexts) while ignoring word distractors in L1 or L2. Distractors were either phonologically related to the picture name (direct; FISH–fist), or related through translation to the picture name (TT; LEG–milk–leche), or they were unrelated (bear–peach). Results demonstrate robust activation of phonological representations by translation equivalents of word distractors. Although both direct and TT distractors facilitated naming, TT facilitation was more consistent in L2 naming …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Every writer has codes that need to be identified on his work. Most of the time, a good author has something to denounce in society. They use literature as a means to express it. A good reader has the responsibility to find the real story behind a writer’s text.
In this case, there are two masterpieces written at different times from each other but full of codes which tie them together. They are: The Harp and the Shadow by Alejo Carpentier and Hie Pond, by Manuel Zeno Gandía. These books have something in common: they establish a connective link between …
La RepresentacióN Del Indio En La NovelíStica De José MaríA Arguedas, Teresa Gizzi
La RepresentacióN Del Indio En La NovelíStica De José MaríA Arguedas, Teresa Gizzi
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

"MíO Cid" Revisited From Middle Ages To Postmodernity : Freedom And Transgression In Medieval Structures Of Servitude, Alina Bengochea
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Labyrinths of the Language: Shaping the "I" in Norah Lange and Rosa Chacel's Narrative
Although the Avant-Garde movement spread internationally in the early 1900's, very few women in Spain and Latin America were recognized for their contributions to a new style of prose. The purpose of this thesis is to study the representation of the subject and the fragmentation of the "I" in the narrative of Norah Lange and Rosa Chacel. Both writers were iconoclastic in the use of new forms and influenced the way literature and the arts were perceived in their era. They marked a new beginning to …

Cartas Y Memorias Como RepresentacióN Humana Y Literaria De Federico GarcíA Lorca Y Pablo Neruda, Dalia Milagros Santiago
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Every writer has a history behind his work. Most of the time, his personal life becomes part of his literature. His life becomes transparent through his literary work as well as through his personal writings, in this case, in his personal letters to family members and friends and also in his memories. It is through these letters that we get to know the person, his life related to history as well as their worries of his literary performance towards society. Due to this, I have found imperative the need of the study of the letters of Federico García Lorca and …

On The Functional Equivalence Of Monolinguals And Bilinguals In “Monolingual Mode”: The Bilingual Anticipation Effect In Picture-Word Processing, Paul Amrhein
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Previous evidence indicates that bilinguals are slowed when an unexpected language switch occurs when they are reading aloud. This anticipation effect was investigated using a picture-word translation task to compare English monolinguals and Spanish-English bilinguals functioning in “monolingual mode.” Monolinguals and half of the bilinguals drew pictures or wrote English words for a picture or English word stimuli; the remaining bilinguals drew pictures or wrote Spanish words for a picture or Spanish word stimuli. Production onset latency was longer in cross-modality translation than within-modality copying, and the increments were equivalent between groups across stimulus and production modalities. Assessed within participants, …

The Aztec upright drum, tlalpan huehuetl, stood totally silent in the Metropolitan exhibit from Mexico, headless, covered with a swirling visual text which includes two carved eagles and three jaguars, each uttering the sign of holy conflagration in war," blazing water" on one side a transfigured warrior rising up in eagle attire—quauhtlehuanitl" eagle rising," a figure of the sun from dawn to midday—and opposite him a drooping eye at the axis of a quincunx, pierced south to north by a short, angular dart—the calendrical sign 4 Motion, the name of this fifth age of the world, destined to collapse in …

A Bibliographic Introduction To Twenty Manuscripts Of Classical Nahuatl Literature, Willard Gingerich
Department of English Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This bibliography is offered as a preliminary guide for students and professionals interested in the texts of the indigenous Nahuatl cultures of Mexico. It is the bibliography I would wish to have were I to begin again my own investigations, which were undertaken with only a general knowledge of Nahuatl culture of the kind available to any curious aficionado of antiquities. While many excellent bibliographies of Nahuatl materials are available (see Note), none have indicated clearly for the uninitiated the primary manuscript sources of the literature or what editions of facsimile, paleography, and translation have been prepared from each. And …
