This study examines the impact of a semester study abroad experience in Argentina on the second language acquisition of three American university Spanish learners. The goal is to measure development of two aspects of oral communication skills: fluency and performance in the oral functions of narration, and description and supporting an opinion.

The journal article, "Pictures, John Travolta moves, and Sign Language: Active Learning Techniques to Teach Spanish Vocabulary," discusses the experiences 8th grade Spanish students had while using three instructional practices for learning vocabulary. Active learning strategies are a popular method for educators, especially those at the middle level. Educators can get their students active in learning by doing many different things. Pictures, "silly signs," and sign language were used to engage my students in learning fourteen Spanish vocabulary words.

The prize-winning Bildungsroman, or coming-of-age novel, Nada ( 1944) by the Spanish writer Carmen Laforet, tells the story of eighteen-year-old Andrea, who, in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, fulfills her long awaited dream of traveling to Barcelona to study at its University. But the house on Aribau Street, where her relatives live, turns out to be a microcosm of Spanish social ills. It is filled with the spiritual, moral, physical and emotional decadence typical of Spain in the post-Civil War period of the 1940's, hence the title Nada [Nothing]. The purpose of this research project was to develop two units of instruction for use with Spanish classes in grades four through seven. The research begins by exploring the different types of elementary and middle level foreign language programs. The research also investigates the different types of thematic units and what they should include. Finally, two units are developed for use in grades four through seven: a project-based unit built around Eric Carle's book, La Oruga Muy Hambrienta (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), and a knowledge-based unit built around classroom vocabulary. En este artículo se presenta un análisis cuantitativo con el propósito de descubrir la densidad de los anglicismos en el léxico disponible dominicano de acuerdo con diversas variables. Se descubre que el factor más relevante para motivar la presencia de los anglicismos es la diferencia de centros de interés. En unos campos, la densidad es alta (medios de transporte, juegos, el vestido), pero en otros es muy baja e incluso, nula (animales, el cuerpo humano).

This study examines stylistic variation in relation to phonological variables in Puerto Rican Spanish. The methodology for this study has been designed so as to obtain possible stylistic variation in ways of speaking which may occur naturally in daily conversation No written styles will be taken into consideration for this study. Style will be analyzed in terms of topic of conversation, individual (one-on-one) conversation versus a group situation (more than two people in the conversation), and the type of discourse genre.

This study examined the relationship of Spanish language proficiency as related to location and length of stay in a foreign language environment. The participants took a Spanish diagnostic test that measures Spanish proficiency through grammar principles and then answered a questionnaire concerning their language learning experiences, location and length of stay in a Spanish language environment.
It was found that Spanish language proficiency increased with longer lengths of stay in the Spanish language environment. No conclusive data were found to support the hypothesis that those in one Spanish-speaking environment attain a higher language proficiency than those in another Spanish-speaking area. …

En este ensayo se utiliza la variación de la /s/ final de palabra para examinar la validez o no de la llamada hipótesis funcional. En el español de Santiago, cuando el segmento /s/ es una marca morfológica de número plural (niños) o de segunda persona verbal (cantas), es elidido con tanta o con mayor frecuencia que cuando no tiene una función morfológica (lunes). The primary purpose of the present study was to compare the quality of spontaneous language samples elicited from twelve low socioeconomic, normally developing, migrant Spanish-speaking subjects by their mothers in the home and by this investigator in the clinic. The subjects ranged in age from three years, one month to six years, nine months.

En este trabajo se realiza un análisis de la variación de las líquidas /r, l/ en un dialecto rural dominicano con el enfoque de la fonología generativa. Se toman como base los datos aportados por las obras dialectales publicadas hasta la fecha. Se busca mostrar que la concepción generativa permite realizar una descripción coherente de los procesos de cambio fonético, especialmente el de la vocalización de /r, l/ implosivas en la zona dominicana del Cibao.
