"Rodolfo Walsh escribió sus dos únicas obras de teatro, La granada y La batalla, en 1965, cuando ya se reconocía como un intelectual de izquierda, bajo la influencia de su experiencia cubana, pero aún reticente a creer que para los países latinoamericanos era posible dar comienzo a un proyecto evolucionario liderado por grupos armados. This article analyzes the textual elements of Piri Thomas’s Down These Mean Streets that demonstrate, in addition to the continual problematization of closed racial categories, the problems that are associated with static categorizations of ethnicity and nationality. This article calls into question traditional definitions of race, yet it also challenges definitions of Puerto Rican and Nuyorican identities. Race, nationality, and ethnicity are all vital elements to the human experience, and we will discover who is/are responsible for the protagonist Piri’s lack of racial recognition in the United States.

Chaos As Ecological And Autochthonous Expression: An Ecocritical Study Of La Vorágine, Danion L. Doman

The Coastal Review

This article utilizes principles of ecological criticism to provide new readings of both the role and presentation of nature in José Eustasio Rivera’s novel La vorágine. Whereas critics have heretofore focused on Rivera’s memorable subjective descriptions of the Amazon jungle, the present study foregrounds the rich diversity of the real organisms represented in these depictions. In addition, this essay explores the connections between the text’s core trope, chaos, and the current ecological and social scientific understanding of the ecology and the human history of the Amazon Basin.

Argentinean essayists Domingo Faustino Sarmiento and Eduardo Mallea both applied antithetical terms in their explorations of Argentinean identity. Sarmiento juxtaposed “la civilización” and “la barbarie,” while Mallea applied “lo visible” and “’lo invisible.” In response to a somewhat superficial comparison of the terms found within current criticism, and in light of their importance within the writings of both essayists, an in-depth exploration of the terms is undertaken here, addressing the differing objectives and contexts of the writers and revealing a significant evolution in Argentinean thought. Despite the existence of strong anti-immigrant sentiments across the United States, a movement in solidarity with undocumented migrants has emerged in southern Arizona and other heavily traveled border regions. Based on participatory research with the organization No More Deaths / No Mas Muertes, this thesis works towards an understanding of the ways in which this migrant solidarity movement reframes migration within a highly oppositional ideational space. My research suggests that, when examining movements that strongly reject accepted viewpoints, it is important to understand framing not only through analysis that examines a movement or organization as a whole, but also to …

Before the Jesuit Francisco de Florencia was able to publish the History of the Province (1694) he was forced to remove several chapters from the second book of the first volume. The section that was cut out of his manuscript reviews the errors of ancient theories on the environment of the New World, the greatness of Mexico City before the Spanish conquest, and the natural abundance of New Spain. This document is extremely valuable because it demonstrates how colonial historians were restricted by state censorship in what they were able to publish on America. This essay analyzes how two novels, William Faulkner’s Sanctuary and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, present masculine models that juxtapose power and violence during times of social crisis. Both novels present violent masculinities that overcome peaceful masculinities, in conflicts that result in murders and rapes; but rather than acuse the individuals responsible for the violent acts, the texts point out the social mechanisms that inexorably move the authors of the crimes. In both works we also see violence against women and resulting public deaths of men wrongly accused, which happen due to an inability to adapt to …

Irónicamente, fue en el coloquio estructuralista “Los lenguajes críticos y las ciencias del hombre” que tuvo lugar en la Universidad de Johns Hopkins en 1966, donde Jacques Derrida inició a los Estados Unidos por primera vez en el posestructuralismo. Al final de su ponencia “La estructura, el signo y el juego en el discurso de las ciencias humanas”, la cual ya exigía en el posestructuralismo como una rectificación de las teorías estructuralistas, esbozó su teoría de desconstrucción como la gestación de un monstruo a punto de saltar al mundo desprevenido.

This dissertation explores the relationship between language, sacramentality, and enchantment in three twentieth-century Argentine poets: Francisco Luis Bernárdez (1900-1976), Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), and Alejandra Pizarnik (1936-1972). It seeks to ask and answer two fundamental questions. First, to what extent might it be possible to understand the conception of poetic language characteristic of modern poetry as an articulation, however muffled and secularized, of a sacramental apprehension of language and world? Second, how might such a conception be related to what Max Weber famously called “the disenchantment of the world”? The dissertation begins with a broad overview of the development of …

This dissertation analyzes the resurgence of detective fiction in Mexican novéis of the twenty-first century and focuses on the writers' artistic intentions in creating complex texts that contrast the less experimental literature of the Post-Boom. The revival in the popularity of the crime novel in México has emerged, in part, because of the deep societal problems the country faces (such as political corruption, drug cartels, and economic crises), and the sense of powerlessness often experienced by its citizens when confronting such problems. Con la fi ccionalización de la vida del dictador paraguayo José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia (1766-1840) en Yo el Supremo (1973), Augusto Roa Bastos establece un espacio en el que fuentes históricas, literarias y mitológicas se mezclan y se confunden creando un personaje de carácter sobrenatural que mantiene una sutil pero fi rme relación, aún no explorada, con la novela gótica y, en concreto, con la imagen del vampiro.

This article analyzes the representation of coffee plantation societies in the novel La Charca (1894) by Manuel Zeno Gandía (1855-1930). This literary text is a Puerto Rican classic and is one of the four novels included in Las Crónicas de un Mundo Enfermo (Chronicles of a Sick World). The author examines the political and economic structures developed in Puerto Rico during the nineteenth century, as portrayed in the novel. Carrasquillo Hernández pays close attention to the relations between social classes, the coffee oligarchy’s struggle, and the subjugation of workers by the hacendados (landowners) in order to promote and …

En este trabajo se revisa el proceso de institucionalización de la filología en la Argentina a partir del estudio de un conjunto de documentos desconocidos hasta el presente: las cartas que Américo Castro, primer director del Instituto de Filología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, que dirigió a Ramón Menéndez Pidal y Tomás Navarro Tomás, responsables del Centro de Estudios Históricos de Madrid.
