Mindfulness And Motivation In Self-Transformation : Thich Nhat Hanh’S Teachings On The Interbeing, Hui Ling Lim

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper aims to explore the relationship of mindfulness and motivation in self-transformation based on the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. It discusses mind and meditation, the application and impact of mindfulness on body and mind, the Buddhist’s roots of motivation in meditation, the dynamics of motivation in mindfulness practice and Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings on interbeing. He argues that it is not necessary to hold the original Buddhist intention with the goal to attain enlightenment when practicing mindfulness because mindfulness is not only a means but also an end in itself. My discussion will highlight this interconnectedness of mindfulness …

Understanding The Human Condition Through The Depiction Of Protagonists In Crime And Mystery Novels, Kevalin Kaewruean Jan 2021

Understanding The Human Condition Through The Depiction Of Protagonists In Crime And Mystery Novels, Kevalin Kaewruean

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Extant criticism of crime and mystery fiction has indicated how protagonists have freedom of choice in dealing with difficult situations in different forms of risky or challenging settings. In this article, previous criticism is evaluated in terms of its reflection of an essential element of the human condition: the Self’s free will to construct the existential and spatial meanings of its phenomenological existence in relation to the Other. The article further indicates that protagonists tend to disregard their freedom and responsibility for their actions, especially when they make existential choices in traumatic or critical situations. Additionally, the dominance of others …

Gender Identification In Language Other Than Mother-Tongue : A Case Of Non-Thai Listeners Deciphering A Thai Male Speaker’S Gender, Savitri Gadavanij

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper explores what factors contribute to distinguishing gay sounding and straight man sounding speech; linguistic cognate or social knowledge and whether the gender of listeners also determines ability in identification. To answer these questions, 286 participants were classified by nationality into 3 groups of participants: Thai listeners as a control group, Zhuang, and Other listeners. They were asked to listen to 12 voice stimuli in Thai from straight and gay men and identify the gender of the speakers. The outcome revealed that the accuracy rate in identifying a speaker’s gender varied among the 3 groups of listeners with Thai …

The Fragmentation Of Religious Authority In Provincial Towns In Indonesia: The Case Of The Mui (Indonesian Muslim Scholar Council) In Pekanbaru And Pontianak, Imron Rosidi, Yasril Yazid, Amril - Jan 2021

The Fragmentation Of Religious Authority In Provincial Towns In Indonesia: The Case Of The Mui (Indonesian Muslim Scholar Council) In Pekanbaru And Pontianak, Imron Rosidi, Yasril Yazid, Amril -

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article discusses the fragmentation of religious authority in Pekanbaru and Pontianak, Indonesia, focusing on the local mui (Indonesian Muslim Scholar Council). Employing qualitative methods, the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru experience similar religious authority fragmentation due to the human agency. Members of the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru represent Islamic organisations in Indonesia’s fight for the religious authority of their Islamic organisations, not for the cohesion of religious authority in the mui. Because religious authority has the desired will, it is no wonder that outside the mui Pontianak and Pekanbaru many Muslim figures struggle to preserve it. Individuals challenge the religious …

Introduction : From Performance Research To Performance Ecologies In Contemporary Thailand, Pornrat Damrhung, Lowell Skar

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This special issue of manusya explores the diverse ways that performance cul tures are embedded in cultural ecologies in Thailand today. This theme emerged from work done using performance research approaches in projects done around Thailand between 2017 and 2019. These projects discovered that perfor mance lives in cultural ecosystems, both producing new knowledge, skills and performances for those involved in them, and revealing how performance cul tures were locally-grounded living assemblages of creativity in diverse Thai communities.1 These results prompted arranging the first English-language conference in Thailand to focus on performance research and to further ex plore the ecological …

The Promise Of Artistic Research In The Asia Pacific, Danny Butt Jan 2020

The Promise Of Artistic Research In The Asia Pacific, Danny Butt

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Artistic research has sought to gain academic legitimacy through adapting to scientific methods, while also retaining the mandate of the humanities in the reproduction of culture. In both cases, Western epistemologies have structured what constitutes knowledge and how it is circulated and shared. The contemporary university is far more connected to its local environment, bringing the potential of engaging broad publics in the life of the institution. Innovation and experimentation with local artistic forms is one way that artistic research can powerfully animate the 21st century university mission in the Asia Pacific.

Performance Research Seen Through The Lens Of Cultural Ecology : A Case Study Of An Innovative Production At Chiang Mai’S Lanna Wisdom School, Pornrat Damrhung

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines a performance project called Kita Natakan Lanna (Lanna Music and Dance) done by the artist, Saran Suwanachote, or Khru Nick, a dancer in the Northern martial dance form of “Choeng,” at the local arts and culture center known as the Lanna Wisdom School in Chiang Mai. By working with Khru Nick and observing how he produced a new work for this project, I learned that he used an approach based on a local form of cultural life made of interconnected parts, and used the concept of Rabob Niwet or “ecology.” This system is used to …

The Rong Ngeng Of The Andaman Coast : History, Ecology, And The Preservation Of A Traditional Performing Art, Lawrence Ross Jan 2020

The Rong Ngeng Of The Andaman Coast : History, Ecology, And The Preservation Of A Traditional Performing Art, Lawrence Ross

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article examines recent grassroots strategies for preserving traditional performing arts along southern Thailand’s Andaman Sea Coast, focusing on rong ngeng, an idiomatic form of social dance and music, widely popular there in the post-World War Two years. Between 1935 and 1960 a small, mixed cohort of rural performing artists created networks of communities, scattered on Thai-Andaman, with a distinctive regional culture based in the shared repertoire of songs and dances they adapted, created an innovative lyrical style called phleng tanyong (Tanyong song), and a star system that turned village performers into local celebrities (Ross 2017, 68). More than …

Roundtables On Performance Research, Developing Cultural Ecologies, And Artistic Research Networking In The Asia-Pacific, Lowell Skar, Pornrat Damrhung

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Three sessions of international and local participants from a July 2019 conference created active ecosystems which generated living examples of intercultural improvisation, performance research, cultural ecologies and artistic research in Thailand. Summarized and assessed in this article, these sessions revealed some of the first fruits of Thailand’s work in these areas through engagement with other practitioners in the region. Besides offering creative improvisation among Thai artists and artist-centered critical assessments of their work, the article captures active thinkers seeking to reimagine the “festival” format for performance research, and seeks for ways to continue future regional collaboration in artistic research. The …

The varied ensembles of performance practice of three such groups – the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company, the 8X8 Theatre Group, and the B-Floor Artist Collective – are embodied in these groups’ distinctive interactive performance styles and tied to the different creative spaces where they work. The groups’ artistic practices and their working spaces are produced within larger ecologies of performance spanning the urban landscape …

Leh Laweng : Reinventing “Lakhon Phanthang” Hybrid Dance Theatre In A Post-Traditional Style, Phakamas Jirajarupat, Nataporn Rattanachaiwong Jan 2020

Leh Laweng : Reinventing “Lakhon Phanthang” Hybrid Dance Theatre In A Post-Traditional Style, Phakamas Jirajarupat, Nataporn Rattanachaiwong

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Leh Laweng (The Wiles of Laweng) was a new dance-drama the authors created in 2019 in a post-traditional style of “Lakhon Phanthang” or hybrid dance theatre form. Working in our faculty’s theatre, the authors developed an original woman-centerd plot from the well-known Thai epic poem The Story of Phra Aphai Mani by Sunthorn Phu. Our new four-act script focused on the key, but neglected, figure Laweng – a Western-styled warrior queen – and reworked traditional modes of presentation to better convey a new sensibility for today’s audiences. While performed by traditional performers, cast for their abilities in traditional dancing and …

Confronting Otherness Through Theatre : On Directing The Merchant Of Venice For Thai Audiences, Dangkamon Na-Pombejra

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article analyzes on a new directorial approach to Venice Vanija (เวนิสวาณิช), a Thai version of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (written 1596–99) and translated by King Rama vi (r. 1910–1925). It aimed to create a new space and new rules that would encourage Thai audiences to embrace new perspectives by watching the performance. The production was directed by the author in 2018 in the Department of Dramatic Arts in the Faculty of Arts at Chulalongkorn University.  The directing approach focused on the play’s famous line “all that glitters is not gold;” (Act ii, scene vii, line 65), and …
