Foreign And Heritage Language Learners’ Pragmalinguistic Choices In Russian Imperatives, Marina Tsylina, Anna Mikhaylova Dec 2024

Foreign And Heritage Language Learners’ Pragmalinguistic Choices In Russian Imperatives, Marina Tsylina, Anna Mikhaylova

Russian Language Journal

This experimental study examines the pragmalinguistic knowledge of both heritage and foreign language learners of Russian. Specifically, it focuses on how learners interpret the appropriateness of aspectual forms of Russian imperatives in given contexts. Due to limited exposure to authentic input, foreign language learners (FLLs) often face challenges in using pragmatically appropriate language. This study demonstrates that although heritage language learners (HLLs) are exposed to the language from birth, their knowledge of Russian imperatives may not fully align with that of monolinguals. The study participants included FLLs (n = 30), HLLs (n = 10), and monolingual speakers of Russian (n …

Mastering Russian Case: Learning Challenges, Current Textbook Approaches, And New Perspectives, Olesya Kisselev, Angelina Rubina Dec 2024

Mastering Russian Case: Learning Challenges, Current Textbook Approaches, And New Perspectives, Olesya Kisselev, Angelina Rubina

Russian Language Journal

Russian case morphology is recognized as a persistent challenge to second (L2) and heritage language (HL) speakers of Russian by researchers and practitioners alike. However, little classroom-based and pedagogy-oriented literature exists on the matter. In this paper, we address this research gap. First, we present a review of the literature that attempts to explain the challenging nature of mastering Russian grammatical cases from the cognitive linguistic, structural, and psycholinguistic perspectives. We then describe the general approaches to teaching and learning Russian cases found in the most commonly used Russian language textbooks in the United States. Finally, we discuss a pedagogical …

The Al Harris Library received a donation of the archive of retired astronaut General Thomas P. Stafford. The continually growing collection includes over 200 boxes containing NASA reports, professional and personal pictures, videos, and more. Part of the collection is the approximately 700 books used for research by Stafford and his co-author Michael Cassutt to write the memoir We Have Capture: Tom Stafford and the Space Race (2002). Half of these books are a collection of Soviet-era Russia (USSR) space program books and periodicals written in Russian. Michael Cassutt has characterized the books as the most comprehensive collection about the …

Russian Verbs Of Sound’S Web-Scraping Results From The A.A. Zalizniak Grammatical Dictionary And The Russian National Corpus. Multi-Dimensional Scaling Techniques And Visualization Strategies, John Simmons, Irina V. Ivliyeva

Graduate Student Research & Creative Works

This project aims to enhance web extraction techniques pertaining to a specific lexical-semantic group of Russian verbs of sounds, which undergo semantic modifications at the word-formation level (affixation). Additionally, it seeks to organize search results in a manner conducive to linguistic research using Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) techniques and novel visualization strategies.

The primary objective in this phase of the research was to gather, consolidate, analyze, and present a comprehensive index of all forms of verbs of sound sourced from the A.A. Zalizniak Grammatical Dictionary of the Russian language, hyperlink each verbal form in this index with the Russian National Corpus …

Research Data

This project attempts not only to improve the method of web extraction in relation to the source material (lexical-semantic group of Russian sound verbs, semantically modified at the word-forming level) but also systematize the search results using the format that is convenient and effective for a linguistic researcher. The main tasks at this stage of the research were to collect, compile (combine results), analyze and present a summary index of all possible verbal forms of sound verbs, recorded in electronic versions of dictionaries of the Russian language and in the database of the Russian National Corpus (RNC).

The output takes …
