For my Honors Project I created Hands That Speak, a visual installation of media in the College of Arts and Sciences on the 3rd floor. I designed this visual installation to introduce the students and staff at the University of Akron to Deaf culture, ASL (American Sign Language), and the significance that Gallaudet University has in both of those things. “Audism and its Effects within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community” takes a closer look at the history and growth of the Deaf community, highlighting key struggles in Deaf education, the emergence and recognition of American Sign Language (ASL), and powerful movements such as Deaf President Now. From there, the paper explores the concept of audism—discrimination against those who are deaf or hard of hearing—and how it continues to affect the lives of Deaf individuals through harmful misconceptions, limited control over accessibility, and barriers within politics, law, and medicine. The catalyst for this research project stems from the rollback of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) initiatives under the current presidential administration. Executive Orders from the presidential office have caused budget cuts and pauses in federal programs that affect all types of communities across the United States. For the Deaf community, funding for federal and state programs aimed at training ASL interpreters, helping Deaf individuals find jobs, and other communicative tools used by native signers has been paused.
