Donne's use of the imperative when addressing God in the Divine Poems is a maneuver designed to resolve a particularly Protestant dilemma, the same dilemma confronted by the speaker of Elegy 19 under another guise. The Mystic As Pilgrim: Margery Kempe And The Tradition Of Nonfictional Travel Narrative, James P. Helfers

Margery Kempe, fifteenth-century pilgrim and female mystic, stirred up controversy in her own day and continues to do so in the present. This controversy, then and now, centers on both Margery's spiritual life and its social expression. While she was alive, her contemporaries disagreed over the validity of her mystical experience and the way that experience manifested itself; now this conflict continues in contemporary critical debates over the nature of her literary and spiritual significance. A number of comparatively recent publications on collaboration in Quattrocento art attest to the renewed interest in reassessing the nature of professional exchange among artist. These studies continue to shed more light on the prevalence and extent of collaborative artistic undertakings in Florence during this period. Originating in archival research, the studies reject the romanticized, traditional view of Early Renaissance painters, sculptors, and architects as solitary geniuses, suggesting instead that these creative talents operated as entrepreneurs who collaborated to establish profitable careers.

Jean Lemaire de Belges (1473-1525), poet and historiographer of the French and Burgundian courts of the early Renaissance, wrote his epic history of Troy, Les Illustrations de Gaule et singularitez de Troye (1511-1513), at the request of his patron, Margaret of Austria, to offer an "occupation voluptueuse, et non pas inutile" [sensual yet useful occupation] to the ladies of France (1:11). Lemaire dedicated each of the three books of his epic to a different noblewoman. When Jean Bagnyon chose to rewrite Fierabras for his contemporaries at the dawn of the printed book, strong fictional women who participated in their own name in the world, women not limited to domestic, advisory, or intercessory functions, were rare. Their scarcity did not end then. The interest of what follows must lie, at least in part, beyond Bagnyon's text and beyond Floripe herself. The purpose of subjecting the case of Floripe (sister of Fierabras) to close reading is in part to understand how this example of an active woman functions. Literary critics have relied increasingly upon what we know of the particular goings-on at the court of Queen Elizabeth to explain all things we call Elizabethan, including a vast corpus of poetry. Pastoral poetry in particular, long regarded as an allegorical embodiment of court politics, is seen now more than ever as a product of social and political power struggles.
