Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry Jan 1981

Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry

Theses and Dissertations

"The Witness" can be viewed as Clinton F. Larson's poetic manifesto that points the direction for much of his subsequent work. Although his poetic "mormonism" has been questioned by several of his critics, this thesis shows that Larson definitely expresses his Mormon faith in "The Witness" as a metaphorical quest for mythic consciousness. While searching in the poem for sacred space and time, Larson seeks to become closer to the divine and powerful center of being, creating at once a metaphor for his quest to understand and assimilate Christ's atonement and a poetic voice from which he can speak for …

The Apocalyptic "Son Of Man" In Daniel 7, Arthur J. Ferch Jan 1979

The Apocalyptic "Son Of Man" In Daniel 7, Arthur J. Ferch

Dissertations

This investigation studies the identity and nature of the manlike figure in Dan 7:13-14 (hereafter referred to as SM). In the first chapter we reviewed the interpretations of the SM in Jewish and Christian literature since the beginning of the second century of our era and noted that with the exception of the seventeenth century study by Carpzov, discussion of the Danielic figure was limited to passing comments. Throughout this period the SM was interpreted mainly messianically or christologically. During the nineteenth century more substantial inquiries attempted to find answers to the identity and nature of the manlike being primarily …

Galatians As Dialogical Response To Opponents, Bernard Hungerford Brinsmead Jan 1979

Galatians As Dialogical Response To Opponents, Bernard Hungerford Brinsmead

Dissertations

This thesis seeks to discover the center of Galatians, its unique theological statement, by approaching the question from the perspective of the dialogical nature of the letter as a piece of literature, and the theology of the opponents with which it is dialogical. The context of a piece of literature is essential to its being understood. When a letter is as obviously disputative as is Galatians, a vital part of that context must be the opponents who have called it forth. The review of literature reveals that the identity of the opponents in Galatia remains "problematic." Two things in particular …

Hermeneutic(S) ( Reading Programs In Theology), Martin H. Scharlemann Oct 1968

Hermeneutic(S) ( Reading Programs In Theology), Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The ancient Greeks called him Hermes. In their view of things he had the job of communicating what the gods on Olympus might want men to know and what human beings, in turn, hoped to bring to the attention of their several divinities. His name therefore went into the making of the word "hermeneutics," which was first used to designate the art of getting one's message across to others and only later began to be applied to the formal study of the rules and principles governing the task of interpretation.

Luther's Exegetical Principle Of The Analogy Of Faith, Otto Hof Apr 1967

Luther's Exegetical Principle Of The Analogy Of Faith, Otto Hof

Concordia Theological Monthly

It was clear to Martin Luther that what was at issue in his discussion with his opponents, with Rome on the one hand and with the enthusiasts on the other, was not so much the question of principle regarding the importance and relevance of the Bible-in whatever way and however qualifiedly its authority was on all sides theoretically acknowledged and practically brought to bear in controversy through argumentation by means of Bible passages - as rather the question concerning the correct interpretation of the Holy Scripture.

Rectilinear Or Typological Interpretation Of Messianic Prophecy?, William J. Hassold Mar 1967

Rectilinear Or Typological Interpretation Of Messianic Prophecy?, William J. Hassold

Concordia Theological Monthly

The purpose of this article is not to argue directly for the correctness of the one or the other interpretation, though the writer's preference will, no doubt, become clear; rather it is to give a historical survey of the exegetical literature of the two synods dealing with Messianic prophecy and to show how these two contrasting approaches were held by men who were in church fellowship with each other in The Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America, all the while disagreeing with one another on this issue. By presenting the argumentation of both sides of the problem, this study …

An Analysis Of Selected Changes In Major Editions Of The Book Of Mormon - 1830-1920, Jeffrey R. Holland Jan 1966

An Analysis Of Selected Changes In Major Editions Of The Book Of Mormon - 1830-1920, Jeffrey R. Holland

Theses and Dissertations

As the title indicates, this thesis is a consideration of selected changes that have been made in major editions of the Book of Mormon. Much has been said recently about changes and modifications in this record but, unfortunately, most of it has been said by those who have been unfriendly toward both the book itself and the church which endorses it. Because this kind of bias is usually an obstruction to objective scholarship, this study has been undertaken by one firmly within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to document not only what changes have been made, but …

The Posture Of The Interpreter, Martin H. Franzmann Mar 1960

The Posture Of The Interpreter, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Practically everybody in Christendom claims to be in some sense under Scripture. The Liberal feels that he is being "true to the deepest intentions" of Jesus or of Paul when he treats Scripture in his own fashion. Bultmann claims to be dealing so radially with the form of the New Testament message merely in order to confront modern man with what he considers the essential content of the New Testament message. And certainly the Fundamentalist, for all his frequent failure to make the most basic and radical distinction that the Bible itself knows, the distinction between law and Gospel, interprets …

A Study Of The Criticisms Of The Book Of Abraham, Calvin D. Mcomber Jan 1960

A Study Of The Criticisms Of The Book Of Abraham, Calvin D. Mcomber

Theses and Dissertations

This study involves an analysis and evaluation of criticisms made of some of the work of Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet, and a reevaluation of his work and character in the light of the findings of the study. The criticisms were concerned in particular with the method used in translating into English certain material from the language of the original source found on papyrus in an Egyptian tomb. This material is part of a book known as "The Book of Abraham." In general the criticisms dealt with the life's work and character of Joseph.

An Analysis Of Style Variations In The Book Of Mormon, Glade L. Burgon Jan 1958

An Analysis Of Style Variations In The Book Of Mormon, Glade L. Burgon

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of critics who have opposed the Book of Mormon have claimed the book is the product of one man because of the uniformity of style throughout. If these charges were true, Joseph Smith's claim of divine origin for the book and its contents would be in jeopardy.

Studies have shown Semitisms, enallage, and constructions amidst the Book of Mormon writings which seem to indicate that it is a fairly literal translation. If it is such, style differences among the writers should be evident to some degree.

The mental or emotional state of a writer fashions his writings. The …

Thinking Clearly On The Rsv, Arthur Katt Apr 1953

Thinking Clearly On The Rsv, Arthur Katt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every new translation of the Holy Bible has met with opposition. "Whenever a translation is made, the question of its authority as over against the authority of the original or of earlier translations naturally arises." This was the experience of St. Jerome back in the 4th and 5th centuries, when he produced the Vulgate. "At first his translation was met with antagonism, and it was even declared to be heretical." This was true particularly also of our beloved, time-honored King James Version. It took nearly half a century for it to find general acceptance, and quite a bit of the …
