Inductive Biblical Study: History, Character, And Prospects In A Global Environment, David R. Bauer
Inductive Biblical Study: History, Character, And Prospects In A Global Environment, David R. Bauer
The Asbury Journal
In this keynote address at the 2012 Interdisciplinary Colloquium, held at McKenna Chapel on the Kentucky Campus of Asbury Theological Seminary, October 12, 2012, David Bauer examines the history and development of inductive biblical study within its English-speaking environment. In addition, he proposes ways in which this approach can be understood in postcolonial environments as a way to open the methodology of Inductive Bible Study to a larger global audience.
Contextualizing Inductive Bible Study (Ibs) In A Postcolonial Filipino American Setting, Peter Tan-Gatue
Contextualizing Inductive Bible Study (Ibs) In A Postcolonial Filipino American Setting, Peter Tan-Gatue
The Asbury Journal
This article seeks to contextualize the application of Inductive Bible Study (IBS) to a postcolonial setting: the Filipino American Church in Los Angeles.1 As part of the process of doing so, this essay narrates a short history of colonization and Christianity in the Philippines, the migration of Filipinos to the United States and the challenges Filipino Americans encountered as a people living in a foreign land. Included in this story is the importance of Filipino American churches and some contemporary challenges and postcolonial issues (such as “colonial mentality” or internalized oppression) that affect a particular segment of Filipino Americans in …
Inductive Bible Study: Contextual Appropriation In Northeast India, M. Sashi Jamir
Inductive Bible Study: Contextual Appropriation In Northeast India, M. Sashi Jamir
The Asbury Journal
M. Sashi Jamir examines the application of Inductive Bible Study to the tribal communities of Northeast India. This postcolonial situation has some positives such as a context with a higher degree of education, but it has also lead to a prominence of Western philosophy over traditional ways of understanding, which need to be reclaimed. The reality that larger national forces in India often overshadow tribal communities also poses potential problems that prevent the local theological voice from being heard.

The Relationality Of The Holy One Of Israel In The Book Of Isaiah, Tony T.K. Chen
The Relationality Of The Holy One Of Israel In The Book Of Isaiah, Tony T.K. Chen
ATS Dissertations
This dissertation explores the ways that “the Holy One of Israel” is used in the book of Isaiah to depict Yahweh, the powerful and unapproachable God, in his personal relationship with Israel. It investigates the actions and character of Yahweh as the Holy One of Israel and the nature and purpose of Yahweh’s holiness as reflected in the Holy One of Israel’s treatment of Israel. It considers how Yahweh seeks to manifest his holiness in the midst of rebellion through righteous actions. In particular, it examines how the Holy One of Israel rebukes, redeems, and restores Israel, despite her rebellious …
The Rhetorical Approach To 1 Thessalonians In Light Of Funeral Oration, Jae Kyung Cho
The Rhetorical Approach To 1 Thessalonians In Light Of Funeral Oration, Jae Kyung Cho
ATS Dissertations
The present dissertation is a study of the rhetorical approach to 1 Thessalonians, particularly funeral oration. Though many scholars have interpreted 1 Thessalonians in light of thematic perspective, mirror reading, and epistolary approach, this dissertation asserts that Paul employs elements of epideictic funerary oratory to persuade his audience in writing 1 Thessalonians. Moreover, the dissertation shows that Paul’s use of funerary language with some twists in meaning and purpose illustrates that Paul employs topoi and the purpose of funeral oration in 1 Thessalonians.
Encountering the growing persecution, sufferings, and even death of members, the believers of Thessalonica needed encouragement and …

Seven Faces Of Sin: A Study Guide To Biblical Models For How Evil Originates And How It Can Be Overcome, Scott Gambrill Sinclair
Seven Faces Of Sin: A Study Guide To Biblical Models For How Evil Originates And How It Can Be Overcome, Scott Gambrill Sinclair
Collected Faculty Scholarship
This book began as a series of classes that I gave to the monks at New Camaldoli Hermitage, Big Sur, California. The monks encouraged me to publish the material. Later when I was teaching a course on the New Testament at the School for Deacons in Berkeley, I remarked that every preacher should preach on "sin" at least twice a year. My students seemed surprised and intrigued and asked me to explain. I attempted to do so briefly, but the explanation was not adequate. Later another member of the faculty heard that I thought that deacons should at least occasionally …

The Son-Father Relationship And Christological Symbolism In The Gospel Of John, Adesola Akala
The Son-Father Relationship And Christological Symbolism In The Gospel Of John, Adesola Akala
ATS Dissertations
The relationship between Jesus the Son and God the Father plays a crucial role in the Johannine revelation of Christ. The Gospel of John symbolically portrays Jesus as the Son of God who is relationally inseparable from his Father. This research proposes that the Son-Father Relationship (SFR) is at the center of the network of Christological symbols in the Fourth Gospel. The SFR serves to fulfill the author’s stated purpose of John 20:31 and acts as an organizing principle that integrates and structures the Gospel’s unique symbolism. The uniqueness of Johannine symbolism is illustrated in the definition and theory of …

Sensible, Prudent & Shrewd: Building Blocks For A Theology Of Efficiency, Michael E. Cafferky
Faculty Works
This paper examines operational efficiency from a biblical theology perspective. The paper describes operational efficiency in contemporary terms and considers six categories of constraints on efficiency. In pursuing its purpose the paper reviews six relevant biblical themes including: God‘s character, creation, covenant, shalom, blessing, and fruitfulness. Five biblical values and virtues describe how efficiency is to be achieved: truth, wisdom, prudence, usefulness, and stewardship. The biblical theme of agricultural yield provides an illustration of the instrumental virtues and values by which workers achieve and measure efficiency.
Is The Modern Parachurch A Reflection Of Misguided Ecclesiology?, Joshua A. Haywood
Is The Modern Parachurch A Reflection Of Misguided Ecclesiology?, Joshua A. Haywood
Senior Honors Theses
In light of the present situation of Christianity, it has become necessary to examine the biblical basis for ministries outside the normal parameters of the Church. One of the biggest problems with addressing this issue is that of defining the parachurch. An accurate and sufficient definition for what constitutes a parachurch ministry requires an investigation into biblical ecclesiology. The relationship between parachurch ministries and the local and universal church must be established in a time when the lines between them are blurred. Some basic principles need to be established which describe what constitutes a biblical reason for the creation of …

Biblical Preaching, Ovidiu Ionel Dragan
ATS Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to help young pastors improve their preaching. The literature review examined the theological foundation of becoming more biblically accurate in preaching. This study emphasized the importance and usefulness of the Word of God for change and transformation of the lives of those who hear preaching. Biblical preaching is detailed by images and metaphors that help any minister to understand the call, message, authority, and practice of biblical preaching. Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone
Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone
The Asbury Journal
This essay explores the role of biblical exegesis in the task of Christian theology and in the contemporary global mission of the church from the perspective of an Old Testament scholar. It poses the question what a biblical exegesis would look like that was consistently Christian in its assumptions while, at the same time, honest and competent in dealing with the phenomena of the biblical text. Using the exegesis of the early centuries of the church as a case study, the essay develops insights into the role of serious biblical study in empowering the early church's vibrant expansion through the …
