The Context And Effects Of The Spirit Filled Seventy Elders, David Abbott
The Context And Effects Of The Spirit Filled Seventy Elders, David Abbott
Masters Theses
The passage of Numbers 11:16-17, 24-29 is an important passage in understanding the work, role and gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. It also is a passage that sends ripple effects throughout the rest of the Bible, most notably through Joel 2:28-32, Acts 2, 10, and 19, and in Paul’s teachings in Galatians 3:28 and 1 Corinthians 12:31 and 14:1. Although this work does not settle any theological debate about speaking in tongues, it does look into the gifts of the Spirit from an Old Testament perspective. The resting of the Spirit that appears in the Old …
Paulo Freire And Liberation Theology: The Christian Consciousness Of Critical Pedagogy, Peter Mclaren, Petar Jandrić
Paulo Freire And Liberation Theology: The Christian Consciousness Of Critical Pedagogy, Peter Mclaren, Petar Jandrić
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"In this article we expand our work towards intersections and relationships between liberation theology and Paulo Freire. While Freire addressed liberation theology in his writings fairly sporadically (e.g. »The Politics of Education« [1985]), there is no doubt that he »lived a liberating Christian faith« and »significantly contributed to the thinking of liberation theology« (Kyrilo 2011, p. 167). Now that Paulo Freire is no longer with us, arguably the best way to reinvent his works for the present moment is through dialogue with Peter McLaren: Freire’s close friend, »intellectual relative« (Freire 1995, p. x), and one of the key contemporary thinkers …

Medically Modified Eyes: A Baptismal Cataract Surgery In Clement Of Alexandria, Emily R. Cain
Medically Modified Eyes: A Baptismal Cataract Surgery In Clement Of Alexandria, Emily R. Cain
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In Paedagogus 1.6.28, Clement describes baptism through the metaphor of a cataract surgery that enables the percipient to see God. In antiquity, cataract surgery was neither a common nor a safe procedure, which raises the question: why does Clement use such an unlikely metaphor for baptism? In this article, I demonstrate that this medical metaphor of cataract surgery enabled Clement to blur the line between the physical and the spiritual. The visual component of the metaphor allowed Clement to draw from Epicurean sensory perception and epistemology, which understood objects to emit tiny films that entered the eye of the body …
Compassion Und Eine Prophetische Ethik Des Friedens, Hille Haker
Compassion Und Eine Prophetische Ethik Des Friedens, Hille Haker
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The current times are characterized in all regions of the world by violence, (civil) war, terrorism and various exclusions due to gender, social, religious or ethical affiliation. In Latin America, the time of the civil war continues to openly or covertly. Violence in the form of crime, drug wars and the Mara (youth gangs) involved in them and, above all, violence against women are a growing threat. Peace is increasingly fragile.
Despite the practical commitment of Christians, peace theology is a desideratum, even in Latin America, although the theories of liberation offer starting points.
Given these challenges, this book focuses …

Bridging Worlds: Buddhist Women's Voices Across Generations, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Bridging Worlds: Buddhist Women's Voices Across Generations, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Since 1987, Sakyadhita has worked to remind the Buddhist women of the world of their potential to correct social problems and create a world of peace and happiness for all living beings. We strongly believe in the value of awakening the world's 300 million Buddhist women to work for peace and social justice. Our work has been focused in Asia, especially among the poorest women. Sakyadhita's working principle has been to assist those in greatest need: women and children. We are convinced that educating women in disadvantaged segments of Buddhist society will act as a powerful catalyst for long lasting …
Addressing The Need For Greater Social Competence Of Lutheran Brethren Seminary Students Entering Pastoral Ministry, Nathan G. Oldenkamp
Addressing The Need For Greater Social Competence Of Lutheran Brethren Seminary Students Entering Pastoral Ministry, Nathan G. Oldenkamp
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study employed an interview process with pastors and leaders in a small Lutheran denomination to investigate the relationship between social competence and pastoral development. The study data was then evaluated alongside other research regarding what should be taught and how it should be taught to pastoral students. Results indicated that spiritual, intrapersonal, and interpersonal dimensions were related to pastoral competence. Spiritual competence was related to a pastor who lives in the Word of God and is a servant of the Word of God. Intrapersonal competence was associated with pastors who reflect on themselves and develop themselves. Interpersonal competence was …

Unveiled Faces: The Heavenly Counterpart Traditions In Joseph And Aseneth, Andrei Orlov
Unveiled Faces: The Heavenly Counterpart Traditions In Joseph And Aseneth, Andrei Orlov
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
From one of the Manichaean psalms we learn that in the final moments of his life Mani was beholding his heavenly double with “eyes of light.” This was not the only encounter this Syrian visionary had with his upper celestial identity. The Cologne Mani Codex tells us that the heavenly counterpart first manifested himself to Mani at the age of twelve and he continued his visits, to assist with revelations, until Mani’s death. In several texts Mani’s celestial alter ego is designated as a spirit and even called the Paraclete, the same title the Holy Spirit bears in the Fourth …
The Morality Of Compulsory Licensing As An Access To Medicines Tool, Margo A. Bagley
The Morality Of Compulsory Licensing As An Access To Medicines Tool, Margo A. Bagley
Faculty Articles
This Article contemplates the validity of theft rhetoric in relation to the right of countries to grant compulsory licenses from an unconventional perspective; that of biblical teachings on what it means to steal.
Part I describes the use of theft rhetoric in relation to IP infringement broadly and drug-patent compulsory licenses in particular.
Part II challenges the contention, suggested by theft rhetoric, that compulsory licenses are morally wrong as a form of stealing, by considering the meaning of theft in the context of its Judeo-Christian origins.
Part III considers the cogency of the accusation that the issuance of compulsory licenses …
Denominational Incompatibility And Religious Pluralism: A Non-Pluralist Response To A Pluralist Critique, Matthew Stinson
Denominational Incompatibility And Religious Pluralism: A Non-Pluralist Response To A Pluralist Critique, Matthew Stinson
Global Tides
Religious Pluralism is the view that no one religion is correct, and no religion enjoys special status in relation to the Ultimate. Recently, Samuel Ruhmkorff has defended Religious Pluralism from what we'll call 'The Incompatibility Objection': many religions appear to make incompatible claims about ultimate reality, and therefore they cannot all be true. Ruhmkorff defends Religious Pluralism from the incompatibility problem by applying a “subsets of belief” defense that non-pluralists may use in response to denominational differences within a religion. He argues that non-pluralists are faced with denominational incompatibility within whatever religion they are asserting is uniquely true. He further …
Tarry There! Spiritual Endowment For Today's Generation Per Luke 24:49, Cleveland Taylor
Tarry There! Spiritual Endowment For Today's Generation Per Luke 24:49, Cleveland Taylor
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This project will revisit the biblical significance of the treatment of tarry in Luke 24:49 (KJV) and the key principle of waiting on the timing of God’s provision of “power” promised to accomplish the job description He has given Christians. A period of radical fasting and prayer retreat will be an initial tarry presented to encounter the Holy Spirit experience. The word for power that Luke uses in Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:8 references “that ability to do work.” Acts 1:4 placed emphasis on the disciples not leaving Jerusalem without the promise. The potential value of this topic is in …
Mark's Gospel Compared With Virgil's Aeneid, Floyd Schneider
Mark's Gospel Compared With Virgil's Aeneid, Floyd Schneider
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation will present the Gospel of Mark in light of the Aeneid, Virgil’s epic poem published by Augustus immediately after Virgil’s death in 19 B.C. The Aeneid’s genre, literary style, grammar, symbolic hermeneutics, and lasting influence has been thoroughly researched and dissected in literature courses throughout the centuries. It has been translated into numerous languages and widely distributed in terms of geography and nationalities. Virgil wrote the Aeneid to proclaim the deity of Augustus. “Hic Caesar et omnis Juli progenies magnum caeli ventura sub axem. Hic vir, his est, tibi quem promitti saepius audis, Augustus Caesar, Divi genus, aurea …
Congregations Neighborhoods Places (Calvin Shorts), Mark T. Mulder
Congregations Neighborhoods Places (Calvin Shorts), Mark T. Mulder
Calvin Press
Congregational community engagement is so widespread in the United States that it is best described as a congregational norm. Both congregational leaders and attenders, in fact, expect to be involved in community activities simply as a matter of course. Moreover, people in need assume aid from congregations is natural and normal. Beyond that, most congregations want to be involved in their communities—they see neighborhood participation as a natural product of their mission. And congregational social activity also tends to spur other action: studies show that individuals who attend congregations in which there is a strong and clear priority on community …

The Origins And Antecedents Of Joachim Of Fiore's (1135-1202) Historical-Continuous Method Of Prophetic Interpretation, Dojcin Zivadinovic

Problem
In an age of biblical idealism dominated with allegorical hermeneutics, the works of Joachim of Fiore (1135-1202) created a shift in biblical exegesis, directly impacting the development of both Catholic and Protestant eschatology. Although a clear interest has been expressed concerning the influence of Joachim of Fiore on the eschatology of the late Middle Ages, very few scholars have attempted to explore the antecedents of Joachim’s ideas, specifically his historical-continuous interpretation of Daniel and Revelation and the application of the year-day principle. The purpose of this study is to explore the origins of Joachim’s eschatological views and to suggest …
Toward An Adventist Theology Of Refugees, Nicholas Miller, Janna Quetz
Toward An Adventist Theology Of Refugees, Nicholas Miller, Janna Quetz
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"The Bible encourages God’s people to help immigrants, and does not leave it up to just the state, but says the people of God should personally help them. Whatever path is taken in the future it is important to keep in mind that Christ calls us brothers, and we too should call the sojourner within our gates brother. Immigration policy is complex, and there may be no clear guidance from God’s Word on parts of it. But whatever policies are arrived at, the Christian has a role to advocate for the creation and implementation of a humane and moral policy …

Fivefold Ministry: An Expressional Church Model For Releasing 21st-Century Disciples Into Their Missional Potential And Design, Nick Francis Stephens
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Making disciples is the mission of the church. However, the task of equipping and releasing disciples has become progressively complex with the increased access to information and influence shaped by popular leadership content. This has resulted in the emergence of numerous discipleship methodologies that have targeted specific church growth models while lacking transference. While the 21st-century church is undergoing drastic change, a new discipleship perspective is needed for releasing 21st-century disciples into their missional potential and design. The problem this research addressed is the need for identifying barriers keeping the church from fully expressing the fivefold functions listed in Ephesians …

The Need To Equip Lutheran Congregations In Mission For Christ Church Planters For Spiritual Warfare, David John Heinrich
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research project was to address the need for spiritual warfare training and equipping for church planters to be more efficient in mission within the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC) movement. The researcher designed a sequential mixed method approach to this research with LCMC church planters. The research findings demonstrated that church planters were well educated but 96 percent did not receive any formal spiritual warfare training and equipping in seminary or Bible school; the spiritual warfare training environment preferred was hands-on activation workshops.
Theology And The City In Africa: The Significance Of Contemporary African Urban Experience For Theological Reflection, Dominic Fungai Tomuseni
Theology And The City In Africa: The Significance Of Contemporary African Urban Experience For Theological Reflection, Dominic Fungai Tomuseni
Dissertations
In African theology, experience is the leading source for theological reflection, ahead of scripture and Tradition. Since the last quarter of the 19th Century, colonialism has shaped African experience such that today, it is a major factor in theological reflections and other intellectual enterprises from the continent. Much African theology understands contemporary African experience as one of disruption of a "true" or pre-colonial African experience by European colonial forces. Hence, Contemporary African Theology has been about recognition and recovery of pre-colonial African experience or rehabilitation of Africa from effects of colonialism. However, such a view of colonial experience excludes and …
