The Question Of Infant Baptism In The Church Of The Nazarene, G. Dan Harris

In the fall of 1907, Phineas F. Bresee sat down to meet with H.G. Trumbauer in Chicago, Illinois. Trumbauer was leader of the Pennsylvania Conference of the Holiness Christian Church, and met with Bresee to discuss a possible merger between his group from the east and Breese’s Church of the Nazarene. In Trumbauer’s personal journal we find the following account from that meeting. “I was admitted to the secret session of the commission of 14 or 15 men whose work it was to formulate discipline. I objected to wording in Art(icle) on Baptism which they struck out. They also inserted …

The Spirit Of Calvin And The Synod Of Dordt, Steve Curtis

Beginning in November of 1618, in the Dutch city of Dordrecht, the Reformed Church of the Netherlands convened a synod to examine and consider the positions being promoted by a group of pastors and theologians known as the Remonstrants. Chief among the disputed points were the doctrines of soteriology, though there were other, ancillary issues that had developed from this time as well, such as the proper relationship between church and state and church polity. A number of countries sent delegates to the synod which met over 180 sessions. In the end, the Synod denounced the Remonstrance and confirmed the …

Beginning with the seminal work of E. P Sanders, Paul and Palestinian Judaism, in 1977, there has been a concerted effort to redefine the Pauline references to the “works of the law” (mentioned explicitly five times in his epistles and implicitly several more times). It is the contention of those in this movement (most notably beside Sanders are James Dunn and N. T. Wright) that the Reformers, in their reaction against the multi-faceted errors of Rome and, particularly, in their defense of the doctrine of sola fide, read too much into Paul, and that first century Judaism in general was, …

The articles in this special volume of Journal of Business Ethics have been selected from the many presentations at this conference and represent a cross section of the topics and issues covered at the Vincentian Business Ethics Conference at the Manhattan campus of St. John's University in the fall of 2009. Sponsored annually by the Vincentian universities in the United States (DePaul University, in Chicago, Illinois; Niagara University in Niagara Falls, NY; and St. John’s University in Queens, NY), this conference promotes the mission of St. Vincent DePaul, the seventeenth-century Roman Catholic saint who serves as the patron of these …

Niagara Falls, New York was home to the 13th Annual Vincentian International Conference Promoting Business Ethics sponsored by DePaul University (Chicago, IL), Niagara University (Niagara, NY), and St. John’s University (New York, NY), the three American universities sponsored by the Congregation of the Mission (the Vincentians). Conferences in the past had specific themes and corresponding paper presentations focused on a particular topic. This one intentionally did not have a central organizing subject matter to allow for greater diversity. Leaders from the academic and corporate sectors, representing 30 countries, submitted excellent papers on a broad range of ethical issues. This rich …

Response To Stanley Hauerwas, "A Worldly Church", Peter J. Casarella Jan 2009

Response To Stanley Hauerwas, "A Worldly Church", Peter J. Casarella

Peter J. Casarella

An excerpt from the response:

"Responding to a thinker with the originality of Stanley Hauerwas is no small feat, but the idea of engaging the Rahnerian side that he shares with the reader in the present essay presents me with an altogether new challenge. I would like to highlight this and other points in his essay, which took me by surprise and to respond to these surprising points by raising two questions that they bring to mind."
