Will And Grace: The Essence Of The Pelagian Debate, Steve Curtis Sep 2016

Will And Grace: The Essence Of The Pelagian Debate, Steve Curtis

Steve Curtis

The early centuries of the Christian church saw a number of clarifying councils and theological treatises directed at objective doctrines such as the triunity of God and the hypostatic nature of Christ. By the late fourth century, the discussions were becoming more subjective: to what extent does man possess a free will? What is the cause of sin? What are the theological implications involved in salvation, and to what extent does the grace of God hold sway? Such questions naturally led back to the very beginning of time and to the nature of Adam and the consequence of his sin …

What Is Enlightenment? An Islamic Perspective, Muqtedar Khan Sep 2014

What Is Enlightenment? An Islamic Perspective, Muqtedar Khan

Muqtedar Khan

This essay draws on Immanuel Kant’s concept of enlightenment as an escape from self- imposed ignorance and argues that a similar concept of enlightenment can be understood within the Muslim context as escape from self-imposed jahiliyyah, which is understood as fear to exercise reason publicly. The article advocates for ijtihad, is critical of Taqlid, and invokes Islamic sources to invest confidence in contemporary use of reason for interpreting Islam.

The Tension Between Normativity And Plurality In Religious Dogmas And In Constitutional Principles, Vinicius Pintas Marinho Jun 2014

The Tension Between Normativity And Plurality In Religious Dogmas And In Constitutional Principles, Vinicius Pintas Marinho

Vinicius Pintas Marinho

This essay briefly analyzes whether the tension between normativity and plurality in religious dogmas may shed a light in the similar tension also found in the dynamics of constitutional principles. The application of Gadamer’s hermeneutical theory to a transcendental theological framework is placed into conversation with Dworkin’s integrity of the law. This is undertaken through a comparison between the dynamics of conversation for religious dogmas as symbols of a tradition and the function of constitutional principles in the context of Ronald Dworkin’s theory of law as integrity.

Strengthened By Fire: How Events In C.S. Lewis’S Life Shaped His Views On Pain And Suffering, Gary E. Silvers Ph.D. Jan 2014

Strengthened By Fire: How Events In C.S. Lewis’S Life Shaped His Views On Pain And Suffering, Gary E. Silvers Ph.D.

Gary E. Silvers Ph.D.

The issue of pain and suffering has long been a barrier to some when considering the existence of a loving God. C.S. Lewis was not immune to this dilemma. As a self-described atheist, Lewis concluded, “Either there is no spirit behind the universe, or else a spirit indifferent to good and evil, or else an evil spirit.” The purpose of this paper is to explore how Lewis’s experiences of dealing with pain and suffering impacted his faith in God. The paper will show how his suffering and loss actually strengthened his faith.

John Wesley: His Personal Spiritual Awakening, G. Dan Harris

G. Dan Harris

John Wesley became one of the key revival leaders that God used during the first Great Awakening in Europe and America. Wesley, as we can see in his words above, understood that a powerful movement of God was desperately needed. Little did he know that in the coming decades, Wesley, along with a number of other great men of the Christian Church, would be used by God to bring about one of the most powerful Spiritual Awakenings in history. But before Wesley could be used by God for a time such as this, he first needed to experience his own …

Messiah, The Seed Of Abraham: Promise And Fullfilment, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

MESSIAH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SUBJECT OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. THE PROMISES OF THE MESSIAH'S ANCESTORS WERE VERY MANY AND, IN THE SAME TIME, VERY PROFOUND. ABRAHAM IS THE FIRST MAN WHEREOF GOD PROMISED TO BLESS THROUGH HIS SEED. THE TERM "SEED OF ABRAHAM" CAN BE PHYSICALLY UNDERSTOOD, HIGHLIGHTING A CERTAIN PERSON OR A GROUP OF PEOPLE, OR IT CAN BE SPIRITUALLY PERCEIVED, DESCRIBING MESSIAH. THIS ARTICLE INTENDS TO DESCRIBE BOTH SENSES OF THE TERM "SEED OF ABRAHAM", PROVING THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE OF ALL PROMISES TO ABRAHAM WAS TO SHOW MESSIAH WHO WILL BE THE INITIATOR AND THE …

The Roots Of Human Dignity In Quran Verses. Australian Journal Of Basic And Applied Sciences, Seyed Mohammad, Kalantarkousheh, دکتر سید محمد کلانتر کوشه

Seyed Mohammad Kalantarkousheh

Human dignity is of paramount concern in the modern world mentioned explicitly and implicitly in several verses of the Holy Book of Islam, the Quran. In the first part of the present study we discuss the most explicit verses regarding human dignity that pertain to the children of Adam (A.S.), manifestation of dignity and attributive effects of children on their ancestors from two points of view, Islam and Christianity. In a verse from the Quran, the appointment of man as a Divine vicegerent and its aftermaths are mentioned, followed by a verse that discusses the Divine final objective in creating …

Conversion And Witnessing: Intercultural Renewal In A World Church, Peter Casarella Jan 2013

Conversion And Witnessing: Intercultural Renewal In A World Church, Peter Casarella

Peter J. Casarella

Witnessing is very closely connected to Christian conversion in the New Testament. For example, the legalistic connotations were not originally present. In order to uncover the genuine connection, we will examine: 1.) metanoia and martyria in the multiple Biblical witnesses, 2.) the myriad forms of Christian witnessing to beauty, justice, and truth in the 21st century, 3.) the unique testimony of Latino/a Theology, and 4.) the “Last Supper” of the monks of Tibhirine. Intercultural renewal and a renewed witness to the Gospel can be mutually strengthened by recognizing once again the original connection between conversion and witnessing.

Slaves To Contradictions: 13 Myths That Sustained Slavery, Wilson Huhn Jan 2013

Slaves To Contradictions: 13 Myths That Sustained Slavery, Wilson Huhn

Wilson R. Huhn

People have a fundamental need to think of themselves as “good people.” To achieve this we tell each other stories – we create myths – about ourselves and our society. These myths may be true or they may be false. The more discordant a myth is with reality, the more difficult it is to convince people to embrace it. In such cases to sustain the illusion of truth it may be necessary to develop an entire mythology – an integrated web of mutually supporting stories. This paper explores the system of myths that sustained the institution of slavery in the …

Webs Of Faith As A Source Of Reasonable Disagreement, Gregory Brazeal Jan 2012

Webs Of Faith As A Source Of Reasonable Disagreement, Gregory Brazeal

Gregory Brazeal

Contemporary political theorists and philosophers of epistemology and religion have often drawn attention to the problem of reasonable disagreement. The idea that deliberators may reasonably persist in a disagreement even under ideal deliberative conditions and even over the long term poses a challenge to the common assumption that rationality should lead to consensus. This essay proposes a previously unrecognized source of reasonable disagreement, based on the notion that an individual's beliefs are rationally related to one another in a fabric of sentences or web of beliefs. The essay argues that an individual's beliefs may not form a single, seamless web, …

Abandonment – Who, How, Why: A Case For A Multifaceted Understanding Of Jesus’ Cry From The Cross In Mark 15:34, G. Dan Harris Jan 2012

Abandonment – Who, How, Why: A Case For A Multifaceted Understanding Of Jesus’ Cry From The Cross In Mark 15:34, G. Dan Harris

G. Dan Harris

The view of Christ bearing our sins on the cross is a necessary component of various atonement theories that exist. Within these atonement theories there exists a need for God’s justice. Therefore, as Christ took these sins of mankind upon Himself, part of the experience that His humanity dealt with was genuine separation. This was not necessarily because the Father somehow had to “look away”; it was rather because mankind’s sins have created a real separation from God and a genuine experience of abandonment. Thus, Christ experienced the abandonment (separation from God) in our place and because of our sins. …

Differences Between The Water Baptism And The Moment Of Receiving The Holy Spirit, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor Dec 2011

Differences Between The Water Baptism And The Moment Of Receiving The Holy Spirit, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

From the New Testamental’s point of view, there are some differences between the time of the water baptism and the time of receiving the Holy Spirit. Even if chronologically the two acts can be very close, we can always make a clear temporal distinction between them. Using the most relevant passages from Acts, this article intends to prove that in all cases the baptism with the Holy Spirit was a distinct experience from the water baptism. The article also describes tangentially the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

Baptism In Water: Its Foundation, Form And Formula, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor Jun 2011

Baptism In Water: Its Foundation, Form And Formula, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Water baptism is the most common act of worship being carried out in any religious denomination. This article intends to demonstrate that Christian baptism did not occur from now here, but it is the result of an ascending process of purification rituals found in the Old Testament. Also, in the content of the article are presented other forms of baptism. Regarding the formula used in water baptism, the careful reader of the Bible, raises a legitimate question : Why did Jesus Christ command baptism to be done “in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy …

The Early Influences Of John Wesley, Concerning His Views Of The Ministry To Children, From The Mouths Of Children: John Wooley, G. Dan Harris

G. Dan Harris

Our focus continues on those who influenced Wesley in these areas of ministry to children. In several articles, we will look at a number of accounts Wesley included in his journal that came directly from the children themselves. Wesley encountered a number of children, and stories of children, who testified to and displayed a deep level of holiness and spiritual maturity. Despite the fact that Wesley often did not expand on his thoughts concerning these accounts, the fact that he included them, and almost never discounted them, seems to clearly indicate that he took each account as genuine. This article …

How Much Does A Belief Cost?: Revisiting The Marketplace Of Ideas, Gregory Brazeal Jan 2011

How Much Does A Belief Cost?: Revisiting The Marketplace Of Ideas, Gregory Brazeal

Gregory Brazeal

Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. is often credited with creating the metaphor of “the marketplace of ideas,” though he did not use the exact phrase and his argument for free speech was not based on distinctively economic reasoning. Truly economic investigations of the marketplace of ideas have progressed in step with developments and trends in the law and economics literature. These investigations have tended to be one-sided, with writers focusing primarily either on the production of ideas (for example, Posner) or their consumption (for example, behavioral law and economics), without considering in depth how producers and consumers interact. This may …
