The Descriptive Problem Of Evil, Brad Kallenberg
The Descriptive Problem Of Evil, Brad Kallenberg
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Language is like the cane in the hand of the blind person. The better one becomes at getting around with the cane, the more he or she is apt to forget the cane but through the cane perceive the objects scraped and tapped by the other end. A defective cane may distort the world perceived by the blind person. So too, defective use of language threatens to muddy our understanding of the things we talk about. When discussing something as difficult as natural evils, a frequently undetected defect in our language use is “overly attenuated description.” In this piece, I …

The Aesthetic Hermeneutics Of Hans-Georg Gadamer And Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Jason Paul Bourgeois
The Aesthetic Hermeneutics Of Hans-Georg Gadamer And Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Jason Paul Bourgeois
Marian Library Faculty Publications
This book compares two figures that are not often associated together within the field of Roman Catholic theology, namely Hans-Georg Gadamer and Hans Urs von Balthasar. This work attempts to find deep structural affinities in the aesthetics and hermeneutics of both thinkers, as expressed through shared metaphysical and anthropological assumptions about the dialogical nature of truth and interpretation. The body of the work will be devoted to analyzing these assumptions of Gadamer and Balthasar, both individually and in comparison with each other. However, this preface is necessary to place the concerns of this book into a broader theological context.
Abraham Heschel And The Catholic Heart, Padraic O'Hare
Abraham Heschel And The Catholic Heart, Padraic O'Hare
Religious & Theological Studies Faculty Publications
This essay associates the deep abiding influence of Rabbi Heschel on Christians with his unique expression of an incarnational religious imagination, appealing to all Christians with a "Cathoic heart." In this view, the opposing worldview to dualism, life is experienced sacramentally, God is experienced immanently and religious symbols are experienced as deeply efficacious. The essay focuses especially on the incarnational trait of associating mystical experience and contemplative prayer with prophetic action and reveals how this link is nurtured and cultivated by Heschel and by his friend, Thomas Merton.
Situating The Word: The Significance Of Christian Space For Evangelism, Laceye Warner
Situating The Word: The Significance Of Christian Space For Evangelism, Laceye Warner
The Asbury Journal
With Protestant denominational membership declining steadily, and at times dramatically, since the 1960s, numerous local churches eagerly search for ways to attract new members. In efforts to reverse this trend, or at least slow it down, many have turned to techniques more informed by market logic and capitalist ideologies than the triune God revealed in biblical texts. One such technique insists upon creating "gathering spaces" with little if any evidence of Christian identity. Not even the nomenclature (e.g. "gathering space" instead of "worship space" or "sanctuary") indicates the nature of the purposes intended for these spaces. Many conclude the more …
Dying And Behold We Live, Steele Lazerte
Dying And Behold We Live, Steele Lazerte
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Law and gospel are significant themes in not only the New Testament but also in the writings of foundational Christian theologians. In terms of repaching, Paul Scott Wilson is the first homiletician to develop a theological concern with law and gospel in a manner which can be considered an explicit and fully developed law/gospel homiletic. However, it is the concern of this paper to embrace Gerhard O. Forde’s theology for preaching, in particular his understanding of the gospel as a liberating offence, while utilizing the advantages of Paul Scott Wilson’s methodology for law/gospel preaching in general.
The Notion Of Healing In The Therapeutic Work Of Georeg Freemesser And Steve De Shazer: A Comparison, Mary Marrocco
The Notion Of Healing In The Therapeutic Work Of Georeg Freemesser And Steve De Shazer: A Comparison, Mary Marrocco
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
George Freemesser and Steve de Shazer have several strong commonalities in their understandings of healing; both can be situated within the framework of pastoral counselling. Because for Freemesser the therapist’s person is an important dimension of healing, I begin with his biography, then my view of healing. To provide the pastoral counselling framework, I review the thought of Pilch, Clebsch and Jaekle, and Rovers. Steve de Shazer’s view of healing is then discussed, though he does not employ the term, by misunderstanding his notion of the goal of therapy as healing. Freemesser’s understanding of healing is described, and finally a …

Aspects Of Interfluentiality Between John And The Synoptics: John 18-19 As A Case Study, Paul N. Anderson

The focus of the present essay is thus to pose a series of theses regarding the interfluential character of the JohnSynoptic relationships and to assess the degree to which each of those particular relationships is confirmed or disconfirmed by the material in the Johannine Passion Narrative. Implications will then follow at the conclusion of the essay.

Means Of Evangelistic Growth: The First 300 Years, J. D. Payne
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
The purpose of this study is to examine the various means, by which the gospel spread across the word throughout the first three hundred years of the Church’s existence. Though some biblical texts will be referenced, the primary focus of this study is upon the post-Apostolic, pre-Constantinian years. This study is descriptive in nature. Though contemporary secondary source literature will be consulted, I will draw predominantly from the historical documents written circa A.D. 100-300 and Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History.
Dominion! Kingdom Action Can Change The World, C. Peter Wagner
Dominion! Kingdom Action Can Change The World, C. Peter Wagner
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
If social transformation is what the Spirit seems to be saying to the churches today, we would expect that the Bible would support such an idea. Many will be asking the inevitable question: Is there a biblical theology to substantiate this?

Post Holocaust Theodicies: Contemporary Solutions To The Problem Of Evil, Wei-Erh Chen
Honors Program Theses
Evil is a gruesome sight to behold. It can be found, among other places, in the Holocaust and its systematic slaughter of millions. It is the stench of death choking the air of Buchenwald and Auschwitz. It is God and the little boy gripped in their death throes upon the gallows. In a world following the holocaust, we are challenged, more than ever before, to reconcile the existence of the traditional Judeo-Christian God with the experience of sheer, incomprehensible evil. How could an omnipotent, omniscient, and wholly good God, if He exists, allow this cruelty to take place against his …
