Terminator Or Super Mario: Human/Computer Hybrids, Actual And Virtual, Noreen L. Herzfeld
Terminator Or Super Mario: Human/Computer Hybrids, Actual And Virtual, Noreen L. Herzfeld
Theology Faculty Publications
Is a human/computer hybrid feasible: If so, in what ways would such hybridization affect our concept of what it means to be human? There are two forms of such hybridization, the actual and the virtual. Actual hybridization involves the implantation of mechanical devices in the human body. In actual hybridization the computer comes to us and to our body to enhance our functioning in our world. In virtual hybridization we go to the computer, projecting our minds into the world of cyberspace and being formed there. Perhaps the most common form of virtual hybridization is the immersion our children experience …

Mimicking Virgins: Colonial Ambivalence And The Ancient Romance, Virginia Burrus
Mimicking Virgins: Colonial Ambivalence And The Ancient Romance, Virginia Burrus
Religion - All Scholarship
Burrus pursues juxtapositional readings of two sets of novelistic texts that cut across religious affiliations and the politics commonly associated therewith: the Acts of Paul and Thekla and Achilles Tatius's Kleitophon and Leukippe, on the one hand, and Heliodorus's Ethiopian Story and Joseph and Aseneth, on the other. Reading for resistance, she also reads for virginity, which functions as a site of articulated cultural ambivalence in each of the romances. That virginity is a characteristic and historically innovative preoccupation of ancient romances is scarcely a novel proposition.

The Multi-Site Movement, Dave Ferguson
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
There are now at least 1500 multi-site churches in the United States. No longer does a church have to only have one branch, one location, or one campus. This article presents and analyzes data collected by Leadership Network in a survey they conducted with over 1000 multi-site churches.

Proclamation In Cross-Cultural Context: Missiological Implications Of The Book Of Daniel, Sung Ik Kim
Proclamation In Cross-Cultural Context: Missiological Implications Of The Book Of Daniel, Sung Ik Kim
Dissertations
This study attempts to explore the biblical foundation ofsalvific mission as revealed in God's purposes for the nations (missio Dei ) in the book of Daniel and to investigate the means that Daniel employed in his ministry as an overt missionary who was sent to witness to God's salvific purpose in the cross-cultural context of heathen kingdoms.
The main objective of this research is to validate the book of Daniel as a missionary document and show that its missiological implications are still relevant to present-day missions. Chapter 2 explores the salvific purpose of missio Dei in the book of …
Theology Of Judgment In Genesis 6-9, Chun Sik Park
Theology Of Judgment In Genesis 6-9, Chun Sik Park
Dissertations
The present dissertation seeks to develop a theology of judgment in Gen 6-9. Following an introductory chapter, the second chapter is devoted to analyzing the three main extrabiblical ANE flood stories (the Eridu Genesis, the Atra-Hasis Epic, and the Gilgamesh Epic) from the four aspects of judgment: date, cause and purpose, extent, and procedure. The analysis of those stories reveals that the ANE flood was a historical and local (global dimension is implied) event without moral cause, and that the judgment of the deities had a procedure of investigation, sentence, execution, and mitigation. The third chapter treats the theology of …

Theology: Also (Green) Religious Experience Seeking Understanding, Thomas Hughson
Theology: Also (Green) Religious Experience Seeking Understanding, Thomas Hughson
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Religious experience in contemporary theological epistemology is a theme broad enough to allow for many approaches. This essay grants the concept of 'religious experience' tentative validity, subject to later qualification. The actual experience explored will be a 'green' experience of non-human nature that many Christians have in common with many non-Christians. The first section describes it in a general way, while the second probes its character as a possible 'religious experience'. Then, a third section begins to explore its theological significance. A conclusion emphasizes the essential, dynamic partnership between theological method and non-methodical elements, such as religious experiences in general …
Epistemology As Theology : An Evaluation Of Alvin Plantinga's Religious Epistemology, James K. Beilby
Epistemology As Theology : An Evaluation Of Alvin Plantinga's Religious Epistemology, James K. Beilby
Faculty Books
Alvin Plantinga is arguably one of the most influential philosophers of our time. Much of his career has been devoted to explaining and defending the intellectual acceptability of Christian belief. Recently he has developed a comprehensive, rigorous, and distinctively Christian religious epistemology. This book presents the development of Plantinga's religious epistemology before considering Plantinga's mature religious epistemology in detail. Locating Plantinga's most recent work in the context of his theological assumptions, his previous work on religious epistemology, and in the context of the current debate over how knowledge should be characterized, Beilby blends theological and philosophical discussion to offer a …

Group Spiritual Direction For Pastors In Sioux County, Iowa, Jeff L. Sajdak
Group Spiritual Direction For Pastors In Sioux County, Iowa, Jeff L. Sajdak
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The assumption is often made that seminary students and pastors are prepared to care for their own souls. It is assumed that they will be able to nurture their own spiritual formation, becoming conformed to the image of Christ for the sake of others. The reality is that pastors often do not have preparation to provide themselves with such care. Pastors will sometimes identify a longing for “something more” in their spiritual lives, without knowing exactly what they are seeking or how to gain it.
One resource that can promote effective Christian spiritual formation for pastors is spiritual direction. However, …
Liberation Theology Of Disability And The Option For The Poor, Scot Danforth
Liberation Theology Of Disability And The Option For The Poor, Scot Danforth
Education Faculty Articles and Research
A liberation theology of disability provides a spiritual discourse that unites a critical analysis of the economic dimensions of disability oppression with an appreciation for the lived experience of disabled persons. This paper builds from prior liberation theology scholarship and the Catholic theological concept called the preferential option for the poor to articulate a liberation theology of disability marked by critical social analysis, humility, hope, and love.

The Morality Of Human Rights: A Nonreligious Ground?, Michael J. Perry
The Morality Of Human Rights: A Nonreligious Ground?, Michael J. Perry
Faculty Articles
In the midst of the countless, grotesque inhumanities of the twentieth century, however, there is a heartening story, amply recounted elsewhere: the emergence, in international law, of the morality of human rights. The morality of human rights is not new; in one or another version, the morality is very old. But the emergence of morality in international law, in the period since the end of World War II, is a profoundly important development.
The twentieth century, therefore, was not only the dark and bloody time; the second half of the twentieth century was also the time in which a growing …
