This is what J. S. Whale thinks: ''The modem man is not impressed by the mere citation of texts; he rightly wants to understand them, in their context. His very certainty that the Scriptures are the fount of divine wisdom - that it is indeed the Word of God which is spoken to him in the words of the Bible - has set him free from the bondage of the letter, the prison-house of verbal infallibility. It is no use shilly-shallying here; loyalty to truth in the shape of literary and historical criticism forbids it.

Dialecticism, a branch of Calvinism, vitiates the chief article of the Christian religion, the doctrine of justification by faith. It does injure to the cor ecclsriae. The article of the grace of God in Christ, of justification by faith, gives the Church its life; in terms of dogmatics, it forms the material principle of Christion theology. Calvinism, however, makes "the dogma of God's eternal election the cor ecclsriae, the heart of the Church." The principles ruling the dialectical theology are not those of the Reformation. Brunner repudiates the formal principle of Protestantism, the sola Scriptura. He refuses to accept Scripture as the sole authority, the only source and basis of doctrine. The bare words of Scripture cannot establish a doctrine. “In earlier days this discussion [concerning the Virgin Birth] used to be cut short by saying briefly, ‘It is written'; that is, with the aid of the doctrine of verbal inspiration. Accordingly we teach the enhypostasia of the human nature of Christ, i. e., the taking part of the human nature in the personality of the divine nature. This we find to be the teaching of Scripture. It teaches: "The Word was made flesh," John 1, 14. God become man not by the conversion of God into a man, but by the Second Person of the Trinity adding a human nature to His divine person.

Chiliasm vitiates the Gospel principle. Salvation is by grace alone. Salvation is by the Gospel alone. This truth constitutes the principle of Christian theology and of all Christian thought. It dominates Christian theology. It is intolerant of the conception, in any form, that salvation can come to man by any other way than by the Gospel of grace.
