Twenty-four years in India, sixteen of in seminary teaching, might sound like good credentials. Put differently, the credentials wilt: 24 years working within 100 miles of land's end of this vast country, reasonably fluent in only one of India's 18 official languages, barely conversant with another, in contact with nationwide theological education only recently, a member of the steadily diminishing group of expatriate seminary instructors.
Masters In The Making, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer
Masters In The Making, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer
Concordia Theological Monthly
How can we go about the task of improving our learning? That is the problem that confronts every educational institution, but especially the church-oriented college or seminary. The problem obviously involves both students and faculty members. The improvement of the learning process on the students' part is dependent on the improvement of the teaching process of the instructor. The teaching process, moreover, calls for a large measure of good counseling on the part of the instructor. The more personal attention a student is given by his instructor, the more stimulated and motivated the student will be to pursue bis studies …
The Relationship Between Graduate Theological Education And The Worldwide Mission Of The Church, William J. Danker
The Relationship Between Graduate Theological Education And The Worldwide Mission Of The Church, William J. Danker
Concordia Theological Monthly
In spite of a desk piled high with other work, this writer could not find it in his heart to refuse an editor requesting an essay on a topic of such potential significance and excitement as "The Relationship Between Graduate Theological Education and the Worldwide Mission of the Church."

'Your Job, Mr. President ... .", David S. Schuller
'Your Job, Mr. President ... .", David S. Schuller
Concordia Theological Monthly
Good humor and a certain salty Lutheran irreverence are necessary on the day of a presidential inauguration to make sure we don't believe every exaggeration spoken in the excitement of the occasion. You may remember the inauguration of a university president some years on the first anniversary of his inauguration ago. After two days of festivities and speeches suggesting that the fate of half of Western culture revolved about the decisions that would be made by the new president, a friend put his hand on his shoulder and said, "'Look, George, forget all that stuff. You have three main jobs: …
The Task Of The Theological Professor, Arthur C. Repp

Attitudes In The Early Church Affecting Petrine Primacy, Gilbert Franke
Attitudes In The Early Church Affecting Petrine Primacy, Gilbert Franke
Master of Divinity Thesis
This study is an investigation of the attitudes expressed by the early church toward St. Peter. While most attempts to understand the origin of Rome's claim to authority based on Petrine primacy have dealt with attitudes expressed in documents, the approach here is to examine the evidence found in various types of artistic expression. It is hoped that the attitudes toward St. Peter which affected and may have caused the unique association between himself and Rome are clarified. It is important to note in this respect that this study deals with the development of attitudes actually held in the early …
Doctrinal Emphases In The Missouri Synod, Erwin L. Lueker
Doctrinal Emphases In The Missouri Synod, Erwin L. Lueker
Concordia Theological Monthly
The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has had the same doctrinal basis for 125 years. It is remarkable that within that period of time the loyalty of no group in Synod to that basis as given in the constitution could be seriously challenged. This, however, does not mean that there were no variations in emphases. This study is a brief synopsis of such variations. It is not concerned with difference, uniformity, contradiction, or inconsistency in doctrine (although some of these factors may be present) but with coordinating stresses. Examination of consistent adherence to basic insights is also beyond the scope of this …

Law-Gospel Reductionism In The History Of The Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod, Edward H. Schroeder
Law-Gospel Reductionism In The History Of The Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod, Edward H. Schroeder
Concordia Theological Monthly
This essay proposes to trace a segment of the history of hermeneutics in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod insofar as the distinction between Law and Gospel plays a role in that history. The study is important because in recent years one school of thought in the Synod has stated that some pastors and teachers are confusing the proper relationship between the two by practicing what these critics call "Gospel reductionism." This criticism seems to have been launched in the Synod in two conference papers that John Warwick Montgomery delivered to eight different audiences in the spring and fall of 1966.

Walther's Theology Of The Word, Carl S. Meyer
Walther's Theology Of The Word, Carl S. Meyer
Concordia Theological Monthly
C. F. W. Walther (1811-1887), the premier theologian of the Missouri Synod, was a dogmatician who relied heavily on the writers of Lutheran Orthodoxy of the 16th and 17th century. He made little use of the historical-exegetical method. John Philipp Koehler, the historian of the Wisconsin Synod, points out, for instance, regarding the proposal to have one joint theological seminary within the Synodical Conference in 1878: “Walther's hobby, the Latin disputation, with Latin the medium of instruction, as embodied in the Missouri proposals for the joint seminary was as antiquated scholasticism and besides would have kept the whole study of …
Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton L. Rudnick
Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton L. Rudnick
Concordia Theological Monthly
Perhaps current tensions and polarization in the Synod have demonstrated the relevance of the study and desirability of updating it. On the other hand, 125th anniversary considerations may have prompted the request. Then again, since the request came rather late (only a month before the deadline), the unflattering truth may be that this article is a "filler" for other material which was cancelled at the last minute. Some questions are better left unanswered. (ED.: Ain't it the truth?)

The Orders Of Creation-Some Reflections On The History And Place Of The Term In Systematic Theology, Edward H. Schroeder
The Orders Of Creation-Some Reflections On The History And Place Of The Term In Systematic Theology, Edward H. Schroeder
Concordia Theological Monthly
In this article, he argues that the concept associated, with the term "orders of creation" in current Missouri Synod, discussions of the ordination of women is not Lutheran but Calvinist in origin, and not a Biblical concept.
Polygamy And The Christian Church, Nathaniel G. Inyamah

Apostolicity And Ministry, Reginald H. Fuller
Apostolicity And Ministry, Reginald H. Fuller
Concordia Theological Monthly
This article was delivered in substantially this form at the Episcopal-Lutheran dialog on April 15, 1971, together with the one by Dr. Carl S. Meyer. Dr. Fuller surveys the evidence of the New Testament and concludes that the historic episcopate belongs to the essential marks of the church in the same way that the authoritative, historical canon of the Word does.
Apostolicity And Ministry: A Lutheran View, Carl S. Meyer
Apostolicity And Ministry: A Lutheran View, Carl S. Meyer
Concordia Theological Monthly
The author presents an historical survey of the Lutheran view of the ministry, with special emphasis on The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and concludes that the historic episcopate does not exist jure divino, and that fidelity to the apostolic Word is essential, not fidelity to apostolic succession.
The One Eucharist For The One World, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
The One Eucharist For The One World, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
After describing the private character of the Eucharist, Dr. Piepkorn defends its public character with four observations. (1) The humanity of Jesus Christ is present and this unites Him and the worshiper with all humanity. (2) The Christ who is present is the Creator of all things. (3) Christ and His Father have compassion for the whole world and employ many worldly means to bring life to people. (4) The Eucharist is designed to prepare us for service to the world.
Do The Lutheran Symbolical Books Speak Where The Sacred Scriptures Are Silent?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Do The Lutheran Symbolical Books Speak Where The Sacred Scriptures Are Silent?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
An introduction to some of the problems raised by the fact that the Lutheran Symbolical Books on occasion use nonbiblical concepts, draw their metaphors from nonbiblical sources, go beyond the Biblical materials, extract doctrine from textually dubious Bible passages, use an allegorizing hermeneutical method, and give a specifically "Lutheran" interpretation to certain Biblical terms and texts.

Ethical Individualism In Clement Of Alexandria, David Paulsen
Ethical Individualism In Clement Of Alexandria, David Paulsen
Concordia Theological Monthly
It has been noted that Clement of Alexandria (ca. 150-215 A. D.) diverges sharply from primitive Christianity in important respects, such as his views on eschatology and the significance of the Law. It is my contention that Clement also diverges from almost the entire previous Christian tradition as far as we know it in the matter of ethics, in that he places individual perfection above communal concerns such as love and justice.
