The Real Presence In The Lord's Supper A Comparative Study Of Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, And Tom Hardt, Geir Hoaas May 1975

The Real Presence In The Lord's Supper A Comparative Study Of Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, And Tom Hardt, Geir Hoaas

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Our objective is to portray the Real Presence under three aspects, namely Christology, Salvation for the individual, and the Function in the Church. As such it is a systematic endeavor to clarify the relation of the Real Presence to each of these areas. The two latter are necessarily dependent on the first. However, we are also limited in a historical sense, in that our study is primarily an analysis of these three relations as presented by the theologians we are investigating, Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, and Tom Hardt. We do not, therefore, intend to give an independent and original contribution …

The Role Of Lutheran Theology In India Today, James Canjanam Gamaliel Jul 1974

The Role Of Lutheran Theology In India Today, James Canjanam Gamaliel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

As I write, I have in mind the pastors and lay leaders of the nine Lutheran Churches of India. The topics treated in this thesis will be useful for group discussions in congregations so that the people and the pastors will realize the heritage of the Lutheran Church. How the five doctrines chosen are crucial in facing the specific problems and opportunities the church in India is facing will be shown in each chapter. In evaluating the contribution of Lutheran theology, the doctrines promulgated by the Second Vatican Council and some Roman Catholic scholars will al.so, when relevant, be referred …

A Pastoral Response To The Charismatic Movement, Jack Schneider May 1974

A Pastoral Response To The Charismatic Movement, Jack Schneider

Master of Divinity Thesis

In the material recorded in Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthian congregation, the reader comes into contact with what Paul refers to as charismata, or spiritual gifts. Chapter 14 of this Epistle concentrates on two of these charismata, namely speaking in tongues and prophecy. Both are "utterance gifts", and from Paul's treatment of them, it seems that there is a definite link between them. Since we are currently experiencing an increasing element of "charismatic renewal" within our own denomination, and do not seem able to deal pastorally with it, it will be my purpose in this brief section to delve …

Theological Issues At The Colloquy Of Montbeliard 1586, Charles Louis Mcclean Jr May 1974

Theological Issues At The Colloquy Of Montbeliard 1586, Charles Louis Mcclean Jr

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is as study of how in one instance a Lutheran Church of the late sixteenth century dealt with the problem of church fellowship with the adherents of the Reformed religion.

History In The Hermeneutics Of Jurgen Moltmann, Lloyd Gross May 1974

History In The Hermeneutics Of Jurgen Moltmann, Lloyd Gross

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

"In Europe it is often said that the theology of hope is neither a school nor a movement, but a book.” That book is Theologie der Hoffnung, by Jurgen Moltmann. In Europe no more can be said about the theology of hope than has already been said by Moltmann. His work has become the measure of the school of theology which claims history as its special province! So the study here attempted is devoted mostly to that book in an effort to evaluate and understand the contribution it has made to the contemporary discussion of history and its relationship to …

Some Concerns About Current Confessional Statements, Horst W. Jordan Jan 1974

Some Concerns About Current Confessional Statements, Horst W. Jordan

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther on occasion compared the world with a drunken peasant who when he was shoved into the saddle on the one side toppled out of it on the other so that it was impossible to help him, do what one would. The history of theology tempts one to use the same comparison. "What venturesome statements have men permitted themselves to make, statements that ultimately had to lead to disaster because the attempt was made to present a truth that was correct enough in itself but which was taught in a one-sided, undialectic form, with complete contempt and disapproval of its …

The Concept Of Time In The Old Testament, Hans Walter Wolff Jan 1974

The Concept Of Time In The Old Testament, Hans Walter Wolff

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the Old Testament we find abundant evidence for the view that man lives out his life within time, that he lives within times that change. By examining characteristic Old Testament texts, we shall attempt to gain a picture of how the Old Testament's understanding of time relates to its understanding of man.

God's Word In His Mission, William J. Danker Jan 1974

God's Word In His Mission, William J. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

Like it or not-and most of them don't-Christian lay people of all denominations find themselves drawn into a struggle splitting the worldwide Christian church into two opposing camps. How much of the Bible is to be understood literally, and how much of it is properly understood to be picture language? Is the Bible to be regarded entirely as a piece of human literature subject at all points to correction by modern research? Or is it exclusively a divine creation? Must it be presupposed that when man's historical, geographical, or scientific knowledge conflicts with this book, it is always 20th-century man …

The Yahwist Looks At Abraham, Ralph W. Klein Jan 1974

The Yahwist Looks At Abraham, Ralph W. Klein

Concordia Theological Monthly

While the Bible is recognized as God's Word for all rimes, each of its writings was originally addressed to specific people at specific times in history who faced immediate crises and/or opportunities. Obviously, the better we understand those original circumstances, the better we will understand precisely what was being said.

A Comparison Measurement Of Law And Gospel In Selected Sermons Of Saint Augustine, Bernard Of Clairvaux, Jonathan Edwards, Phillips Brooks, And Walter A. Maier, David Gunderlach Nov 1973

A Comparison Measurement Of Law And Gospel In Selected Sermons Of Saint Augustine, Bernard Of Clairvaux, Jonathan Edwards, Phillips Brooks, And Walter A. Maier, David Gunderlach

Master of Divinity Thesis

Our study has borne out the fact that Law and Gospel are indeed inherent in Scripture and not just a product of the Reformation, in that we have seen them both actively at work in the sermons we have studied. To a man, all five of our preachers, over a time span of some sixteen hundred years, have preached both Law and Gospel in their sermons.

The Soteriological Approach To Christian Doctrine., F. E. Mayer Nov 1973

The Soteriological Approach To Christian Doctrine., F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran Confessions present all Christian doctrine from the soteriological standpoint, that is, from the meaning each has for our salvation. Each and every doctrine of Christian revelation must be viewed in actu, not only in statu; it must be within the focus of a real spiritual problem and be presented only in its soteriological significance.

A Study Guide For "The Soteriological Approach To Christian Doctrine", Ronald W. Roschke

Concordia Theological Monthly

The study guide is designed to be used with the entire section of Mayer’s book dealing with the soteriological approach. This includes some material in lessons 3 and 5 not included in this reprint. We have included the page numbers of those materials in Mayer (according to the 1961 edition) so that those who have access to the full volume may use it. Furthermore, those questions dealing with these materials are marked with an *. We have attempted to construct these questions in such a way that discussion can take place even if all members of the class do not …

Darkness At Noon: Mark's Passion Narrative, Robert H. Smith Nov 1973

Darkness At Noon: Mark's Passion Narrative, Robert H. Smith

Concordia Theological Monthly

The puzzle of Mark's Gospel is not how Jesus can be both human and divine, son of Mary, and Son of God. The mystery has to do rather with the cloud brooding over this Jesus as He proceeds to a lonely and forsaken death. Over all His days as over all His words and works, over His power and His weakness, over His speech and His silence, there falls the shadow of the cross. How can such a portrait be "the good news of Jesus Christ" (1:1)? How can this somber and sobering document be called a "gospel"?

Documentation: Authority In The Church, C. F. Walther, Arnold Krugler (Translator) Nov 1973

Documentation: Authority In The Church, C. F. Walther, Arnold Krugler (Translator)

Concordia Theological Monthly

In 1879 Dr. Walther delivered a long essay to Iowa Lutheran congregations who were reluctant to join the Synod because they feared the Synod would arrogate to itself excessive authority over them. With extensive citations from Scripture, Luther, the Lutheran Confessions, and the Lutheran fathers, Walther developed his concept of the proper relationship between Synod and congregations.

The Lessons Of Schwagerehe, Edward E. Busch Nov 1973

The Lessons Of Schwagerehe, Edward E. Busch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Traditional interpretations of Bible passages can have very long lives and can survive strong challenges if they are rooted deeply enough in the culture of a people. A case in point is the idea of Schruagerehe or marriage of in-laws.

An Analysis Of Reinhold Niebuhr's Critique Of Martin Luther's Two Kingdom Doctrine, Jack Flachsbart Nov 1973

An Analysis Of Reinhold Niebuhr's Critique Of Martin Luther's Two Kingdom Doctrine, Jack Flachsbart

Master of Divinity Thesis

In one section of his book, The Nature and Destiny of Man, Reinhold Niebuhr constructs a critique of the Lutheran Reformation, and particularly of Martin Luther's theology as the formative theoretical base of Lutheran Reformation theology. ‘One of Niebuhr's specific charges was that the Lutheran Reformation was explicitly defeatist when confronting the problems of realizing justice in the collective life of man. Niebuhr lays a great deal of the blame for this “Lutheran defeatism" on Luther's formulation of the two kingdom doctrine and his application of it to legitimize the suppression by the government of the peasant revolt of 1525.

A History Of The Development Of Lutheran Church—Canada And The Purposes For Its Autonomy, Paul Langohr Nov 1973

A History Of The Development Of Lutheran Church—Canada And The Purposes For Its Autonomy, Paul Langohr

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this loaner is an attempt to understand why autonomy is such an appealing and satisfying answer to the question of Canadian and world mission for a Canadian Lutheran Church. It is an attempt to prove that as an American-based Church working in Canada she cannot work to her fullest potential nor to her most effective capacity.

Teaching The Faith: Models And Methods, Stephen A. Schmidt Sep 1973

Teaching The Faith: Models And Methods, Stephen A. Schmidt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Now our task is far more limited. I want to focus on the Christian classroom and specifically on the act of teaching the faith. I will develop my remarks in two parts. The first consideration will deal with past and present models used within the church to define the teaching act designed to teach faith. Secondly, I will attempt to underline crucial concerns toward a useful teaching method not only for the 1970s but for the future as well.

The Future Of Christian Education In The Missouri Synod: A Matter Of Self-Understanding, Stephen A. Schmidt Sep 1973

The Future Of Christian Education In The Missouri Synod: A Matter Of Self-Understanding, Stephen A. Schmidt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Permit me to outline the remarks. I will trace briefly the historical benchmarks of our cultural and ecclesiastical past. Secondly, I will develop candid suggestions about the revitalization of that heritage for our present and future. Naturally in the second enterprise one ceases to be historian, risking rather the role of prophet, a dubious undertaking for any person doing history. But there is some comfort in the words of the British philosopher of history, W. H. Walsh, who writes: "Historians may not be prophets but they are often in a position to prophesy."

Six Christian Sermons On The Way To Lutheran Unity, Robert Kolb Sep 1973

Six Christian Sermons On The Way To Lutheran Unity, Robert Kolb

Concordia Theological Monthly

Four hundred years ago this year Evangelical theologians throughout Germany were picking up a new ninety-nine page book published in Tuebingen and saying something like, "What has the smithy forged this time?" James Andreae, or Schmiedlein, born the son of a smith - a fact his better-born antagonists never let him forget -was in 1573 one of the most prominent and one of the most reviled theologians in Germany.

God As Phenomenon, Charles Yunghans May 1973

God As Phenomenon, Charles Yunghans

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper concerns itself with several approaches to a secular understanding of religious belief and deals briefly with the more or less explicit challenge they offer to the notion that there is in fact a God which communicates to man. This problem emerged for me as I encountered religious phenomenology and structuralism for the first time this year, and noted the obvious challenge they pose to traditional dogma. The answer I offer is one I really had not set out to achieve: a tentative acceptance of the results of these programs in the light of the system of Teilhard, the …

Deliverance At The Sea: Diversity And Unity In A Biblical Theme, Arlis J. Ehlen May 1973

Deliverance At The Sea: Diversity And Unity In A Biblical Theme, Arlis J. Ehlen

Concordia Theological Monthly

The present study will first examine the diversity to be observed in references to the Reed Sea event outside the Book of Exodus. The second section will then trace the fourfold witness underlying the most extensive account of the event, that found in Ex. 13-15. As in the case of the fourfold Gospel account in the New Testament, diverse testimonies are seen to reflect the same event, applying it to different needs and situations in the life of God's people. We must learn to avoid leveling the characteristic contours of these individual testimonies into a fiat and uninteresting plain of …

Psychology And Theology: A Return To Dialog, Alan C. Reuter May 1973

Psychology And Theology: A Return To Dialog, Alan C. Reuter

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is a close relationship between Christian theology and contemporary psychology. The Lutheran theological tradition is especially founded in an experiential matrix which gives it a common ground with psychological thought. However, this relationship between theology and psychology has not always been a clear or comfortable one.

Rejoicing In Mercy: Unity In Diversity, John W. Constable May 1973

Rejoicing In Mercy: Unity In Diversity, John W. Constable

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has adopted an apt slogan to celebrate a century and a quarter of its existence: "Rejoicing in Mercy." The Lord has been good to our beloved Synod and has given us so much. A quarter of a century ago we celebrated "A Century of Grace;" a half-century ago we cried "Ebenezer" - "the Lord hath helped us hitherto."
