John Wyclif And His Doctrine Of The Church, Albert E. Meyer Jun 1930

John Wyclif And His Doctrine Of The Church, Albert E. Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

Among these precursors of Luther John Wiclif is preeminent. In point of time he is anterior to Huss of Prague, 1369-1415, of whom Luther learned many things. These two, Wiclif and Huss, no doubt are the two reformers whose influence on Luther is beyond calculation. And since Wiclif preceded even Huss, we may easily recognize the position of influence which the former occupied in relation to the Great Reformation.

The Christology Of St. Paul's Captivity Letters, Luther V. Stephan May 1930

The Christology Of St. Paul's Captivity Letters, Luther V. Stephan

Bachelor of Divinity

I purpose, therefore, to write on the Christology of Paul's captivity letters. My general plan of procedure shall be to tabulate in categorical fashion the sum of the christological doctrines taught by Paul in these same letters, with appended remarks for the purpose of clarification. Uppermost in my mind shall be the expounding of the truth as it is so powerfully adduced in these inspired epistles. I shall determine to defeat and expose the heretical doctrines after careful collation of the source material, The scope of my treatment shall begin with the pre-existent Christ in heaven, take special notice of …

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection According To The New Testament, Gustav Gehlhar May 1930

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection According To The New Testament, Gustav Gehlhar

Bachelor of Divinity

The doctrine of the resurrection of the body is a teaching peculiar to the Christian religion. We need only to investigate the world's religious history in order to be convinced that all other religions know nothing about such a resurrection.

Der Biblische Begriff Gottesfurcht, Martin T. Steege May 1930

Der Biblische Begriff Gottesfurcht, Martin T. Steege

Bachelor of Divinity

The biblical concept of the fear of God is impossible to describe in this treatise. Because there are about two hundred places where the Scriptures speak of the fear of God. We must focus on some of the most important passages. Our task is to interpret important proverbs in order to derive the basic idea of the fear of God. First of all, therefore, it must be determined what this term means and contains and then, as it is in the Christian Ethics comes to the fore. The first part is dogmatic, the second ethical. Therefore, our disposition also breaks …

The Position Of The Christian Woman, Especially As Worker In The Church, P E. Kretzmann May 1930

The Position Of The Christian Woman, Especially As Worker In The Church, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The position of women in most heathen nations and tribes was and is one of almost unbelievable degradation and unspeakable misery. In most cases, even among the more enlightened nations of antiquity, she was nothing more than a mere chattel. Under the old Roman law, for example, a husband had absolute power of life and death over his wife and absolute control of her property. (Brace, Gesta. Christi, 20.) In Athens, during the age of the orators, the woman was obliged to accept without questioning a position distinctly subordinate to the men, both intellectually and socially. "The life of the …

Divergent Teaching On The Plan Of Salvation, Th. Engelder May 1930

Divergent Teaching On The Plan Of Salvation, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Presbyterian of January 30, 1930, published an article by Dr. S. G. Craig, at that time its editor (''Diversity of Opinion within the Organized Church Relative to the Plan of Salvation"), which is to a great extent informatory and to some extent misinformatory. The first section of the article treats of the Pelagian and the Christian teaching on the plan of salvation. "Pelagius, who was the first to teach a formal doctrine of self-salvation in the Church and who may be regarded as the father of all who have taught this doctrine within the Christian Church, held that God …

The Christology Of Present-Day Moderniem, Herbert F. Glock May 1930

The Christology Of Present-Day Moderniem, Herbert F. Glock

Bachelor of Divinity

It is only because modernistic Christology has become stabilized that it can now be summarily treated. Our purpose, then, is to present those christological views which form the self-evident background of present-day Modernism. However, since the views of Modernism are established only by the consensus of opinion, and not by official pronouncement, a study of its Christology requires a review of the present-day modernistic works. We purpose to summarize, then, these views on the various phases of Christ's life, according to His Person, and His Work and Teachings. The sources for present-day Modernism are limited practically to the past twenty …

The Doctrine Of The Real Presence Of Christ In The Eucharist With Special Reference To The Doctrine Of Transubstantiation, Fred C. Kreiss Apr 1930

The Doctrine Of The Real Presence Of Christ In The Eucharist With Special Reference To The Doctrine Of Transubstantiation, Fred C. Kreiss

Bachelor of Divinity

In a Catholic tract of recent date, “The Holy Eucharist Explained” (by Our Sunday Visitor Press, Huntington, Ind.), We read the modest claim that “All Christians for 15 centuries believed the Eucharist to contain the true body and blood, soul and divinity or Jesus Christ, under the appearances or bread and wine” (p. 16); that this is substantiated by the following facts: “In the first place the Greek Church and all the Christian sects or Asia, which are older than Protestantism by 1000 years, believe as we do. Hence such must have been the prevailing belief or Christians during the …

The Augsburg Confession, W Dallmann Apr 1930

The Augsburg Confession, W Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

After visiting Italy and savagely sacking Holy Rome, Kaiser Karl V made the Peace of Barcelona with the Holy Father on June 29, 1520. On August 3 he mode peace with his chronic rival, "the Most Christian King," Francis I of France. This Peace of Cambray had an article "forbidding to print or sell any Lutheran books.'' Thus the noble Kaiser thanked the Lutherans for saving him in the day of distress from the Turk, the King, and the Pope.

On January 21, 1530, Karl called his Reichstag for April 8 to Augsburg, the burg of the great Caesar Augustus, …

Preaching On The Augsburg Confession, Theo. Laetsch Apr 1930

Preaching On The Augsburg Confession, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Preaching on the Augsburg Confession. The four-hundredth anniversary of Luther's Small Catechism, celebrated wherever the name of Luther was known, has undoubtedly been a source of richest blessing. Pastors and people become better acquainted with its history and contents, learned to appreciate this little book the more highly, and thanked God the more sincerely for this precious gift. The sermons preached on the Catechism during 1920 were not in vain, but productive of splendid results, sure as Is.55, 10. 11 still holds good. Let us hope that similar streams of blessing will flow from the celebration of the four-hundredth anniversary· …

Miracles And Natural Law, Charles C. Nieman Jun 1929

Miracles And Natural Law, Charles C. Nieman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this investigation, aside from academical requirements, which it is an attempt to fill, is to show that the position of the orthodox interpreters of Scriptures, especially in connection with the questions of the miraculous, is not unwarranted or ungrounded.

Fundamental Inconsistencies In The Theories Postulating A Cuneiform Origin Of The Biblical Creation Record, Henry J. Kleindienst Jun 1929

Fundamental Inconsistencies In The Theories Postulating A Cuneiform Origin Of The Biblical Creation Record, Henry J. Kleindienst

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper then shall be to consider the claims raised by those who believe that the Cuneiform tablets form the basis of these stories, to show the weaknesses of these theories, and to advance the positive reasons why the Genesis account is not dependent on any cuneiform original. We shall first treat of the Sumerian tablets for they are older in point of time, and then devote the major portion of the paper to the Babylonian tablets and restrict it to the so-called Enuma Elish.

Life After Death, With Especial Stress On The Teachings Of Spiritism, Russellism, And Christian Science, Theo W. Brust May 1929

Life After Death, With Especial Stress On The Teachings Of Spiritism, Russellism, And Christian Science, Theo W. Brust

Bachelor of Divinity

There is no subject that has more persistently occupied the mind of man than that of his state in the future world. A true understanding of this question involves man's happiness not only hereafter, but also here. It implies, of course, an "after death", or that death does not end all.

The Divine Call Of The Christian Minister, W F. Bruening May 1929

The Divine Call Of The Christian Minister, W F. Bruening

Bachelor of Divinity

Why could Paul tell Timothy, "If a man desire the office of a bishop he desireth a good work"? There must be a very good reason why he mentions this office as especially desirable in preference to other honorable vocations. Indeed, he did have a good reason, for Paul is not here voicing his own personal opinion, but he is writing what the Holy Spirit prompted him to say. It is God himself who is here speaking. It is He who shows us in in His Word why this office is of such great value and consequently to be desired.

The Idea Of God In 20th Century Philosophy, Frederick C. Stein May 1929

The Idea Of God In 20th Century Philosophy, Frederick C. Stein

Bachelor of Divinity

What a hodge-podge! What god-makers our 20th century philosophers are! When revealed religion is condemned to the rubbish heap and modem philosophes relie solely upon their intellect, senses, experiences, nature, etc., what unimaginable and ofttimes unintelligible ideas of God do they not create for themselves. We are inclined to exclaim with Pyrrho, who lived 365 before the time of Christ or twenty years after the birth of Aristotle, “There are no two schools of philosophy that agree upon the essential problems. Speculation brings us only trouble and uncertainty and involves us in endless contradiction. Abandon barren speculation and - instead …

The Synonymns Of Conversion, W H. Mclaughlin May 1928

The Synonymns Of Conversion, W H. Mclaughlin

Bachelor of Divinity

The over-systematization tendency in theology has had many sad consequences. Among these are not only the perverted harmonization efforts, which in the doctrine of election have led to the Calvinistic and the synergistic solutions of the “Cur alii prae aliis?" dilemma, and in the doctrine of justification have resulted in a lamentable confounding of Law and Gospel in quest of a "higher harmony”, but also certain subtly scholastic unscriptural distinctions which discriminate between the effect of the preached and of the written Word, endeavor to establish a different working for each of the sacraments, and have also borne fruit in …

The Christ Of St. John's Gospel, Leonard W. Koehler Apr 1928

The Christ Of St. John's Gospel, Leonard W. Koehler

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose in writing this treatise on the Christ in St. John's Gospel is most ably expressed by the Beloved Disciple himself when he says in his gospel 20,31, "But these things are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus did so many things outside of those recorded in the gospels that John says, "I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written", 21,25. Therefore, with the help of God, the present writer, too, shall try to briefly show from this one gospel that Jesus, …

The Natural Law And The Natural Knowledge Of God And Their Relation To Conscience, Richard R. Caemmerer

The Doctrine Of Christ In The Apocalypse, Walter Ellwanger Apr 1928

The Doctrine Of Christ In The Apocalypse, Walter Ellwanger

Bachelor of Divinity

More have been led astray by vagaries and false notions received from the Apocalypse of Saint John than from any other book of the Bible. Luther wrote four centuries ago: "Es haben wohl viel sich daran versucht, aber bis auf den heutigen Tag nichts Gewisees aufbracht, etliche viel ungeschicktes Dinges aus ihren Kopf hineingebraeuet." (Vol. XIV, 130.) This warning applies today, and most certainly all who attempt to write anything on such a marvellous book as this have in common the feeling of trepidation and incapacity for such a task. It is evident that mysteries, problems, and difficulties will always …

The Conception Of God In Modern Philosophy: A Presentation Of The Views Of Josiah Royce, Henri Bergson, William James And H.G. Wells, H A. Basilius

Bachelor of Divinity

In defining the scope of our paper, we have tried to hold before us several very general objectives. In accordance with our thesis we shall, of course, treat the religious speculations of the above named philosophers. We shall nevertheless also show the roots of the respective systems from which these speculations take their source. We shall also attempt to show the endeavors of harmonizing-if the expression may be pardoned-religio-philosophic thought with the substrata of revealed religion together with the fact of and cause for the inevitable failure of such attempts. And finally, we hope to point out on the basis …
