And I Heard 'Em Say: Listening To The Black Prophetic, Cameron J. Cook

This thesis aims to explore how conceptions of the black prophetic tradition, as discussed by thinkers Cornel West and George Shulman, might be expanded into the realm of African American musical traditions and genres. I argue that musical genres like the blues and hip-hop function as an affective discourse that aesthetically, politically and religiously function as sites of resistance to white supremacy and provide alternate pathways to liberation as compared to more canonical instantiations of the black prophetic. In particular I provide close readings of performances and art by Nina Simone and Kanye West.

Charles Darwin's theory of biological evolution of species was accepted or rejected by Mexican scientists, including Gabino Barreda, representative of Comte's philosophy. It was also included by Justo Sierra in a history book for the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, a decision which raised a lot of criticism from conservative groups. It is also discussed the implications of social Darwinism in the early Twentieth Century Mexico. The document we offer is a satire published in those years, which resembles the tone of Swift's Gulliver Travels.

Scholars often attempt to construct collective ideologies in order to generalize the beliefs and views of entire populations, with one target population frequently being the African American community during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, doing so fails to recognize the individuality of the population’s members and, especially in the case of the country’s oppressed Blacks, establishes a system where assumed notions and ignorant ideas abound. These myths may be true or they may be false. The more discordant a myth is with reality, the more difficult it is to convince people to embrace it. Although Korean-Americans have high religious affiliation, they have a low religious commitment. Many Korean-Americans think of the church as a place for relaxation and social connection rather than a place of worship. With the distorted perspective towards the church, the Korean-American churches experience split and division; the church's growth stagnates or declines, and the church is no longer healthy. This project provides suggestions for becoming a healthy church through a case study of the Lord-Jesus Korean Church (LJKC) in Richmond, VA. Empire, Eschatology And Stolen Land, Allen G. Jorgenson

In this article I propose that empire be countered by a revised understanding of eschatology. I first explore the idea of an eschatology of space, wherein the notion of eschatos as limit is advanced. I then revisit a temporal understanding of eschatology illumining the theme of the pause, or rest. This Sabbath theme, in concert with attentiveness to space, is then brought to bear upon the primal North American experience of empire: the expropriation of aboriginal lands.

Survivors of stressful life events and traumatic experiences often report positive psychological changes “...as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances” (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004, p. 1). Three often reported areas of growth include having a greater appreciation for life in general, new priorities, and an increased significance placed on interpersonal, spiritual or religious issues. Despite reports of positive changes, the literature on stress-related growth (SRG) is inconclusive as to whether SRG is an illusion or represents actual change. This essay reflects on the dangerous situations of human migrations as revelatory of a God-for-us. Drawing on key texts in the Old and New Testaments, the author explores how God’s migration across human landscapes can deepen our understanding of divine and human personhood. It concludes with a few practical reflections that address Latinos/as and their life-seeking migrations across U.S. borders.

U.S. Latino/a theologies have been prophetically strident in calling out oppression of every sort for scrutiny — all, that is, except for sexuality: particularly homosexuality, around which they has been an embarrassing and stultifying silence. Nickoloff calls for a “teología homo de conjunto,” calling attention to questions of gender and sexuality, and the crossings between them, in contemporary critical theory and Latino/a theology.

‘One Is Not Born A Latina, One Becomes One’: The Construction Of The Latina Feminist Theologian In Latino/A Theology, Michelle A. González

The author argues that feminism and feminist theory are not taken seriously enough as critical resources in Latina/o theology. She interrogates the politics of identity as practiced &mdash overtly and covertly by Latinx theologian &mdash and how that identity discourse refracts the production of theology in the academy. She calls for greater collaboration among feminist theologians, as well as women who do not consciously use a feminist hermeneutic. Finally, she urges Latino theology to train a hermeneutics of suspicion on every essentialism, particularly figurings of "the people," as they often appear in Latinx theologies.

In this unpublished work, William R. Farmer (1921-2000), former associate professor of New Testament at Perkins School of Theology, recounts the story of the Dallas Fire of 1860 and the events that followed: the hanging of three innocent African American men and the whipping of many local slaves. Farmer’s work explores the causes of these acts of racial terrorism by presenting and discussing numerous primary resources. Accompanying the book manuscript is a related work: “A Reader for the Study of the Dallas Fire of 1860.” Both documents were created in the late 1990s.

Ascetic Behavior And Color-Ful Language: Stories About Ethiopian Moses, Vincent L. Wimbush

The characterization of the fouth-century Black (Ethiopian) monk named Moses in late ancient Christian hagiographie narratives opens wide a window not only onto particular understandings of, and propaganda about, ascetic piety and religious orientations to the world, but also ancient (non-black) Christian sensitivies to racial/color differences. Four ancient sources— Palladius' Lausiac History, Sozomen's Ecclesiastical History, the anonymous Apophthegmata Patrum, and Acta Sanctorum—are analyzed on the basis of a recent translation.

Historical and cultural criticism can serve to aid minority, culturalist readings of the Bible to stand with integrity against alien imperialistic readings. Historical criticism is necessary in order to gain perspective on the historically determined nature of all religious constructs, including those in biblical texts. Cross-cultural analysis is necessary in order to interpret the symbols and referents of biblical cultures and contemporary dominant cultures, so as to determine which symbols and referents from any culture are relevant and affirming.
