Living Toward One Another With The Word Of God, Harry G. Coiner Oct 1965

Living Toward One Another With The Word Of God, Harry G. Coiner

Concordia Theological Monthly

Many forces are at work in our society today which combine to make personal interest an abiding motivation. The pleasing art of being social has assumed the doubtful coloration of the slick professional impersonality. People seem to become "involved" with people only "in a role" and not in a personal and meaningful way, not so their "heart feels it;” as we say. The drive for individualism is bred into us from our American heritage, and we have become a breed of people skilled in the devices of keeping away from people while living with them and working with them and …

The Self-Understanding Of The Church, Martin L. Kretmann Apr 1965

The Self-Understanding Of The Church, Martin L. Kretmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The theme of the 1965 convention of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod will be the words of our lord to His disciples when He appeared to them on the evening of the day of his resurrection: "As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you." Special attention will be given to the latter phrase in devotions and essays, and the whole convention proceedings will center in the concept that the church, the body of all who believe in Jesus Christ and accept Him as their lord and Savior, is sent into the world on His mission, to …

From Advent To Shrove Tuesday, Walter E. Buszin Jun 1964

From Advent To Shrove Tuesday, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

Liturgical life and activity have not been at a standstill since the close of World War II. Already more than a decade ago more books on worship and liturgics were being published in English than in any other area of theological literature. It is likely that this is true also today. At present more courses in liturgics are being offered at theological schools of North America than ever before in American history; they continue to increase in quantity and quality from year to year. Services of worship conducted in American churches of our day reflect concern for decorum and order …

The Pastor As Administrator Of The Christian Fellowship, Harry G. Coiner May 1964

The Pastor As Administrator Of The Christian Fellowship, Harry G. Coiner

Concordia Theological Monthly

It may be helpful to say immediately that a church office, receptionist-secretary, an electric typewriter, a motorized mimeograph machine, and a mahogany desk are some of the trimmings and tools of parish administration but not the real substance of it. Parish administration is concerned with Christian discipleship. It is an activity rooted in what God is doing through the Word and the sacraments in the lives of men and women and children and in how they are being built up, trained, and committed to spiritual tasks.

Extracongregational Communion Services, Frederick H. Pralle Mar 1963

Extracongregational Communion Services, Frederick H. Pralle

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Church exists in the world to glorify God by bringing the Gospel and the sacraments to the world and thereby keeping Christians in saving faith. The people of the Christian community are also to live their faith in actions of love toward one another and those outside the fellowship of the Christian community. The Church is, therefore, in the world but not of this world.

The Will Of God In The Life Of A Christian, Eugene F. Klug Aug 1962

The Will Of God In The Life Of A Christian, Eugene F. Klug

Concordia Theological Monthly

In what has been called "the greatest piece of theological writing" to come from his pen, The Bondage of the Will, Luther scores his contemporary Erasmus very sorely because of his unwillingness to assert plainly and forthrightly each and every truth which the Scriptures contain. Erasmus took a stance frequently duplicated today when theologians contend that Scripture does not contain propositional truth. Although we grant, of course, that it does not embrace formulations like a dogmatics textbook, the fact is that Scripture, as Luther reminded Erasmus, contains many doctrinal assertions which must be expressed and defended. "Take away assertions," Luther …

The Devotional Use Of The Bible, James G. Manz Jul 1962

The Devotional Use Of The Bible, James G. Manz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our topic suggests that there is another use of the Holy Bible. This is the study of Holy Scripture which is traditionally associated with the discipline of theological seminaries and the work of Biblical scholars and ministers. Its technical term is exegesis and has as its task to get out of the sacred text what God put into it. To achieve its purpose an exegetical study of Scripture involves knowledge of the ancient tongues. Martin Luther had a high regard for that language study which had as its aim the understanding of the meaning of the Scripture. He said, "As …

Justification In The Theology Of Walther, Erwin L. Lueker Oct 1961

Justification In The Theology Of Walther, Erwin L. Lueker

Concordia Theological Monthly

"A person who wishes to describe Walther as a theologian must above all explain his position on the doctrine of justification." This view of Pieper is in harmony with Walther's own evaluation of theology.

Faith Triumphant-Echoes From The Epistle To The Hebrews, Paul M. Bretscher Dec 1960

Faith Triumphant-Echoes From The Epistle To The Hebrews, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

Who wrote the Epistle to the Hebrews? No one knows. But every reader of this epistle does know that its author was a man of faith. The term "faith" appears some 30 times in the epistle. Together with related terms, it constitutes one of the chief motifs in the epistle. On the basis of this epistle, we shall examine I. The Nature of Faith, and II. The Triumph of Faith.

Studies In Discipleship, Martin H. Franzmann Oct 1960

Studies In Discipleship, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is probably no balder piece of narrative in all literature than Matthew's account of the calling of the first four disciples (4:18-22). There is not an adjective in it, and only one adverb, and the style is so completely nondramatic that at least one scholar has spoken of its "casualness." But this sparse and lean simplicity of narrative is anything but an indication that the event here recorded is of minor or subordinate importance, for this same Matthew records the birth and the resurrection of Jesus in subordinate clauses and devotes to the act of the crucifixion a single …

Law-Gospel-Oriented Preaching In Martin Luther's Theology Of Preaching, Chul Hwan Kim May 1960

Law-Gospel-Oriented Preaching In Martin Luther's Theology Of Preaching, Chul Hwan Kim

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Goal of this thesis is to study Luther's theology of preaching. As we have already seen above, the first chapter outlines the world of Luther's preaching. The second chapter explores Luther's preaching, focusing on his specific concern for preaching. In it, we can see that Luther regards preaching as the oral Word of God. Luther believes God is speaking when the preacher preaches. This chapter will show us that Luther's understanding of preaching is concentrated upon the Lord, Christ who is the content of Gospel.

Christian Growth And The Word Of God, Mark Steege Jun 1958

Christian Growth And The Word Of God, Mark Steege

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The relation of the two concepts, Christian growth and the Word of God, will be one of the chief concerns of this study; but almost equal to it in importance will be the proper understanding of a number of the factors involved: (a) God's revelation of His holy will rewarding Christian growth; (b) Man's nature before and after conversion with special reference to his relation to God; (c) The possibility of Christian growth, indicating God's approach to man in His Word; (d) The responsibility for Christian growth as indicated in the Word; (e) The ideal Christian life, as described in …

Are We Preaching A Gospel Free From Law?, Everard Hinrichs Jun 1958

Are We Preaching A Gospel Free From Law?, Everard Hinrichs

Concordia Theological Monthly

Let us state the question which heads this paper more specifically: When we speak of the Gospel (grace, forgiveness of sin, Cross of Christ, Christ Crucified), is it permissible to mix elements of the Law into this concept? One would like to view this question as rhetorical, having for its answer the strongest possible negative. In view of its subject matter, however, one is left with a sense of that kind of interrogative which anticipates a negative answer yet searches deeply for whatever reason may motivate it.

Truth In The Inward Parts: A Sermon For Three Speakers On Justification By Faith, Richard Luecke Oct 1957

Truth In The Inward Parts: A Sermon For Three Speakers On Justification By Faith, Richard Luecke

Concordia Theological Monthly

The sermon seeks to address the Gospel, understood as "justification by faith through grace," to a particular yet current and popular campus attitude or pose. It speaks to the concern for "truthfulness," or for personal integrity and freedom, where all traditional statements are in question, and shows the "point of contact" - and the "point of conflict"! - between Christ and that. It does not attempt to treat the other side of the coin, namely, the concern for the '"truth of statement" in the Scriptures and then in the Confession and in theology - also essential emphases of the Reformation.

Visitation Evangelism In American Churches (Concluded), A. Karl Boehmke Oct 1957

Visitation Evangelism In American Churches (Concluded), A. Karl Boehmke

Concordia Theological Monthly

In keeping with the proposition that it is impossible for any one evangelism method to apply perfectly to any and all circumstances, consideration is now given to points of strength and weakness in the basic visitation procedure. What was this evangelism technique capable of contributing to the work of the church and the ongoing program of the kingdom of Christ? What may have been expected of the plan but should not have been required?

The Holy Spirit And The Christian Life, Lorenz Wunderlich Oct 1956

The Holy Spirit And The Christian Life, Lorenz Wunderlich

Concordia Theological Monthly

The ministry of the Holy Spirit tends to be a neglected ministry, neglected by us in our lives with their problems and tensions as well as with their privileges and opportunities. With some this neglect may be due to a lack of knowledge about the vigor of the theology of the Holy Spirit as it is revealed in Scripture. With others it may rest in the lack of understanding of the rich fullness of the eternal purpose of the Holy Spirit in their lives. With still others it may be accounted for by the mistaken assumption that the ministry of …

Preaching On The Holy Spirit: A Study Of Luther's Sermons On The Evangelical Pericopcs, Martin E. Marty Jun 1955

Preaching On The Holy Spirit: A Study Of Luther's Sermons On The Evangelical Pericopcs, Martin E. Marty

Concordia Theological Monthly

"In our day the Holy Spirit suffers great ignominy," sighed Luther, in reference to current doctrinal misunderstanding. "In our day the Holy Spirit suffers great ignominy," might be a contemporary comment on neglect of the worship of, and witness to, the Holy Spirit. It has become almost a rubric to bemoan this neglect on Whitsunday, the third great feast of the church year, but this complaint is often followed by a tendency to contribute to the neglect and the ignominy through silence from the pulpit, as far as a living concern for the work of the Holy Spirit is concerned, …

The Christian Hope, Herbert J. Bouman Apr 1955

The Christian Hope, Herbert J. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

The general theme of the second assembly of the World Council of Churches at Evanston was "Christ, the Hope of the World." The theme of this essay is related to the message of Evanston. It bids us take note of the fact that we are to deal with the concept "hope" as qualified by the word "Christian." The world also has hope, or rather, hopes; for it has no single, well-defined aspiration. The hope of the world is materialistic, this worldly, earth-bound. But the hope of the world is illusory. It has no solid basis, no tangible object or goal. …

Techniques In Modern Preaching (Toward Communicating The Gospel), Vernon Boriack Dec 1954

Techniques In Modern Preaching (Toward Communicating The Gospel), Vernon Boriack

Concordia Theological Monthly

All of us have been preaching the crucial doctrines of sin and grace Sunday after Sunday, year after year, but have we really been "communicating" these cardinal doctrines which are the Christian faith? "To communicate" means "to impart, convey, share, make it so that we hold in oneness" truths with others. Have we been achieving this end? Or while our preaching has been strictly orthodox in content, have we perhaps been employing words and phrases and thought forms which ricochet off the minds of our people like petty rifle bullets off a Patton rank? Have the minds of our people …

The Chief Function Of The Parish Minister For Effective Evangelism In The Modern Chrisitan Church, Clydrow Durbney May 1954

The Chief Function Of The Parish Minister For Effective Evangelism In The Modern Chrisitan Church, Clydrow Durbney

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Many souls will be won to Jesus Christ and the church will be effectively executing its main function. In order for the church to obey the great commission of the Lord Jesus Christ; the minister may well ask himself the question: What is the chief function of the parish minister for effective evangelism in the modern Christion Church? I shall proceed to answer this fundamental question in the following chapters of the thesis.

The Word In The Word, Walter R. Roehrs Feb 1954

The Word In The Word, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

By formulation our topic also asks us to think of these terms as a given relationship to each other: the Word in the Word. Thus the problem is stated. Two concepts, identical to the that they can be represented by the same semantic symbol, and be differentiated from each other by their relationship to each other. In a somewhat less cryptic form our topic could also be What is the relationship between the Word made flesh and the written Word of Scripture.

Are We Really Preaching The Gospel?, Elmer A. Kettner May 1953

Are We Really Preaching The Gospel?, Elmer A. Kettner

Concordia Theological Monthly

With all of our glorying in the Gospel and our striving to retain purity of doctrine, is it possible that there is too little preaching of the Gospel in The Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod? It's not only possible; I fear that it's highly probable. This is not a blanket accusation against every pastor in Synod. One can judge only from the sermons that one hears and reads. Nor is this written to be sensational or critical. In this respect I am perhaps "the chief of sinners"; I have sometimes by-passed the Gospel. The Scriptures remind us to "exhort one another …

Keep Yourselves In The Love Of God, William J. Hassold Dec 1952

Keep Yourselves In The Love Of God, William J. Hassold

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Letter of Jude is one of the most polemical portions of the New Testament. The purpose of Jude, the brother of the Lord, in writing this letter was to appeal to his readers "to contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints" (v.3).

Our Life Of Faith, W. F. Beck Aug 1952

Our Life Of Faith, W. F. Beck

Concordia Theological Monthly

But a man is no statue. He, not God, does the believing. Like the sensory process of seeing or of hearing, believing is active as well as passive. It is not a pressed flower in a book, but a living plant which receives nourishment only to grow and produce fruit.

The United Testimony On Faith And Life, F. E. Mayer May 1952

The United Testimony On Faith And Life, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran Church bodies making up the American Lutheran Conference have now walked and worked together for a period of more than twenty years. They have learned to know one another both as to doctrine and as to manner of life. They have been associated as brethren serving the Lord. Coming out of varying backgrounds as to national origin and as to distinctive trends in church life and practice, they have learned to cherish one another's contributions to the fulness of the Church's life in Christ. Through closer acquaintance and deepening fellowship they have found that the common roots of …

The Essentials Of Effective Pastoral Counseling, Otto E. Sohn Aug 1951

The Essentials Of Effective Pastoral Counseling, Otto E. Sohn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Pastoral counseling is an age-old art. When impenitent King David all but succumbed under the impact of a terrific sin, his divinely sent pastoral adviser, the prophet Nathan, deftly aided him to find a solution to his problem. By means of a well-chosen parable he first led him to recognize the enormity of his sin, and from there it was but a short step to confession, absolution, and a new lease on life. Scriptural examples of this blessed soul healing function could be greatly multiplied, especially from the ministry of Jesus and the Apostles.
