Research Studies In Religious Education, Louis F. Rush
Research Studies In Religious Education, Louis F. Rush
Bachelor of Divinity
The Lutheran Education Association assumed the task of compiling a bibliography of research studies in religious education to fill the need for such a catalogue. The bibliography, consisting of classified abstracts with index, was compiled especially with the needs of educators of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod in mind. It should be suggestive for future research studies in religious education and should serve to prevent duplication of effort as well as to suggest areas of study not previously covered or covered inadequately.

1900-1950: the end of the first half of the twentieth century brings mankind to an important milestone in the history of the world. The pastor will take time out to review the events of the past five decades and to evaluate correctly the signs of the times. But more important still, mindful of the fleeting of time and the approaching end of all time, the pastor will employ this opportunity to review his work not in terms of years, decades, centuries, millennia, but sub specie aeternitatis.

The Christian Pastor And Courtesy, Richard C. Caemmerer
The Christian Pastor And Courtesy, Richard C. Caemmerer
Concordia Theological Monthly
Who has not heard this comment: "People are not as courteous as they used to be. . . . Young people do not show thoughtfulness for their elders and employers the way they used to do. Folks don't seem to have the manners of the past." In part these reactions are only a symptom of the march of time; the Golden Age always lies in the past. In part, however, the observations are true. Courtesies are folkways, habits of action, and attitude. American civilization causes folkways to break down; for it is materialistic and puts the emphasis upon acquisition of …
The Eucharistic Prayer- Its Use And Development, Henry C. Dequin
The Eucharistic Prayer- Its Use And Development, Henry C. Dequin
Bachelor of Divinity
The Eucharistic Prayer was originally the chief and only prayer in the liturgy; it was “the heart of the liturgy.” It derives its name from the fact that Christ “gave thanks" when He instituted the Lord's Supper. Thus it is a prayer of thanksgiving at the celebration of the Blessed Sacrament which states the meaning of the Eucharistic action, "Do this." "Since this prayer was originally ‘the' prayer, the only prayer in the whole rite. It was there that the whole meaning of the rite had to be stated, if it was to be put into words at all in …

Essays On Sermonizing, John H. Fritz
Essays On Sermonizing, John H. Fritz
Concordia Theological Monthly
When Jesus had called unto Him His twelve Apostles, He said, "As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand," Matt.10:7. After having completed His work of the sinners' redemption and before He ascended to heaven, Jesus repeated His commission, saying, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved," Mark 16:15-16; "Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto …
Why Emphasize A Bible Study Program Now?, Arthur C. Repp
Why Emphasize A Bible Study Program Now?, Arthur C. Repp
Concordia Theological Monthly
There is little point in belaboring the question whether the Church needs to further the study of the Bible. It has needed such study in every age, and the present is no exception. Whether the Church of today should emphasize such a study in a Synod-wide effort, giving it precedence over other important endeavors, is another question and may be open to debate. Right now when we are interested in opening missions in new outposts, when we are getting our congregations conscious of their own opportunities with an “Each One Reach One" emphasis, when the present problems of finances and …
The Universal Priesthood And The Pastor, Richard R. Craemerer
The Universal Priesthood And The Pastor, Richard R. Craemerer
Concordia Theological Monthly
The Universal Priesthood. The centennial year of our Synod re-emphasized the doctrine of the royal priesthood. The Missouri Synod, and before it the Saxon settlement, regarded itself as a Church because of the universal priesthood. That principle was given a fresh statement in the Reformation, and is a particular heritage of the Lutheran Church. The growth of our Church and the routinizing of its ministry causes this principle to lose some of its vitality. One would expect the laity of the Church to be more energetic than the ministry in safeguarding this principle. Actually we need not expect this to …
Foreword, W. Arndt
Foreword, W. Arndt
Concordia Theological Monthly
This year, however, we shall take a different course; our approach to a study of some of the menacing evils will be indirect. The charge has been prominently made that liberalism has invaded the Missouri Synod. Whether the accusation is justified or not, we shall not now endeavor to determine; let each one settle the question with respect to himself before the forum of his conscience. Our intention is to look at liberalism itself, to clarify our views on that subject, and through such a discussion to furnish food for thought which will be of aid in our preparation for …

An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt
An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt
Bachelor of Divinity
Lutheran hymnals continue to increase in size and in choice of hymn tunes. A brief study of The Lutheran Hymnal (1941) of the Missouri Synod shows that the composers of the 380 tunes of the hymnal come in the main from three countries: 18 from America, 59 from England, and 58 from Germany. This trend is borne out in the other Lutheran hymnals published in America during the first 40 years of this century, to perhaps an even more marked degree. If so many of these tunes are coming into the Lutheran Services from extra-Lutheran sources, we also do well …

An Historical Survey Of Liturgical Vestments For Clergy And Sanctuary With Final Reference To Good Lutheran Usage, Harry Krieger
An Historical Survey Of Liturgical Vestments For Clergy And Sanctuary With Final Reference To Good Lutheran Usage, Harry Krieger
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
In other cases unfortunately, the Liturgical trend has produced no improvement, but quite the opposite. Individuals and groups have been swept along by it, to be sure, but have adopted much that is questionable, if not thoroughly repugnant, because they were impressed with the novelty of the thing adopted, or because it was supposed to be an improvement. As a case in point we mention the imprimatur which a large Lutheran body in America recently placed upon the wearing of a colored stole over an academic robe or so-called Genenva gown, in violation both of liturgical principles and historic practice. …
