The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

Theology Considered as Doctrine.

As theology, in its subjective sense, is the habitude, or ability, to teach the Word of God as set forth in Holy Scripture, in all its truth and purity, so Christian theology, in its objective sense, or conceived as doctrine, is nothing more and nothing less than the true and pure presentation of the doctrine of Holy Scripture. 1 Pet. 4, 11 : "If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God.'' Titus 2, 7-10: "In doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be …

The Preacher And Allegorical Interpretation, Wm Arndt Sep 1931

The Preacher And Allegorical Interpretation, Wm Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

In discussing this subject, I am well aware that I am not plowing in virgin soil, but merely following the furrows of various width and depth made by Lutheran theologians ever since the days of the Reformation. Allegorical interpretation has been a big theme in books of the prominent leaders of our ·church on dogmatics and hermeneutics. Our own fathers looked into its status and merits, as several synodical reports and various books of Dr. Walther testify. Hence it is an old matter that we are here subjecting to scrutiny. But it will appear, I think, that its consideration, even …

Christianity, the Absolute Religion

The Christian religion is the absolute religion, inasmuch as it is absolutely perfect, neither requiring, nor being capable of, improvement or supplementation. It is God-given and therefore precisely as God would have it to accomplish its beneficent purpose of "saving sinners." When we ascribe to the Christian religion perfection or absoluteness we do not mean to say that it is a "logically complete whole", or a logically complete and perfect system, in which there are no missing links of thoughts or doctrines. Considered from this viewpoint, the Christion religion …

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

The Two Sources (Principia Cognoscendi) of the Existing Religions.

As we have seen, there are but two essentially different religions, the religion of faith, or of the Gospel, and the religion of works, or of the Law. So also there are but two actual sources (principia cognoscendi, principles of knowledge) from which these two divergent religions are taken. The religion of works is of human origin; it is a man-made religion, having its source and origin in the human heart, in which God has inscribed His divine Law, so that also the heathen, …

The Scriptural Viewpoint of the Christian Theologian.

Owing to the diverse views and tendencies prevailing among theologians to-day, it is necessary for the Christian theologian, before presenting to his readers his dogmatic treatise, to declare in clear and unmistakable terms from what viewpoint this has been written.

The viewpoint of the present-day modernistic theologian is that truth must be determined by human reason in the light of scientific research. The theological Liberalist therefore does not recognize Holy Scripture as the source and norm of faith, but bolds that this ancient standard of the Christian Church has been superseded by the …

When the theme is the chief thought expressed in the text and the parts are deductions from the text, then we have an analytic- synthetic outline. When the theme is a thought derived by way of deduction from the chief thought of the text and the parts are those expressed in the text, then we have a synthetic-analytic outline.

The official papers of the Lambeth Conference have been published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. The Lambeth Conference is a meeting of bishops of the Anglican Church and the Episcopalian bodies (including the American Protestant Episcopal Church) affiliated with it. Suggestions Concerning Courses For Better Indoctrination, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The question of preparing courses of instruction for adequate indoctrination in the various institutions which have been found available for this purpose in the Church is a rather difficult one, but it can be solved successfully if everything is taken into consideration that is now at our disposal in the field.

The Sermon Methods, J H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The three requisites for good sermonizing are: a thorough study of the text, a good outline, and good delivery. Neglecting any one of these will result in poor preaching.

What is perhaps mostly neglected in sermonizing is that which is most important: a thorough study of the text. A thorough study of the text is absolutely indispensable for good sermon work. Without it the preacher cannot make a good outline, and without it he cannot be filled up with his subject, which he must be if he would deliver well, for a preacher's delivery is influenced by his mastery of …

Luther's Use Of Medieval Latin Hymns, P E. Kretzmann Apr 1931

Luther's Use Of Medieval Latin Hymns, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther possessed a versatile genius of surprising fertility. His university training had been almost entirely in the field of the humanities and in philosophy, and he had taken up theology only while acting as instructor at the universities of Wittenberg and of Erfurt; and yet he became one of the most profound theologians of the entire Christian era. He was no philologian, and yet he was able, chiefly on the basis of the most intensive form of home training, to present some of the most thorough linguistic discussions, in Greek and Hebrew as well as in Latin and German, which …

Atheistic Propaganda In Our Country, John Theodore Mueller Feb 1931

Atheistic Propaganda In Our Country, John Theodore Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

Dreary though it may be, the subject of atheistic propaganda in our country nevertheless demands conscientious study, especially by our pastors and all who are directly interested in the young people of our Church in order that ways and means may be found to safeguard their spiritual welfare, in particular while they are attending colleges and universities.

Only a short time ago we were horrified by the blasphemies of agnostic Modernists. To-day, however, we are facing a foe that is even more treacherous and pernicious. Modernism, with all its vagaries, at least endeavored to preserve some kind of religion and …

Religious Education In Mission-Shools In China, Fr E. Brandt Jan 1931

Religious Education In Mission-Shools In China, Fr E. Brandt

Concordia Theological Monthly

The question of religious education in mission-schools in China has again become very acute. In fact, it has reached a crisis. The present regulations touching religious instruction in elementary and middle schools are as follows: "A private school founded by a religious body is not permitted to give religion as a required subject, nor is religious propaganda permitted in the class instruction. If there are any religious exercises, students shall not be compelled or enticed to participate. No religious exercises shall be allowed in primary schools.'' (Chap.1, Art. 5.)
