Consolation In 2 Cor. 5:1-10, Frederick W. Danker Sep 1968

Consolation In 2 Cor. 5:1-10, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

Commentators, lexicographers, and grammarians, almost by consensus, render έφ’ ᾠ in 2 Cor. 5:4 in a causal sense, with such variations as "because," "inasmuch as," "in view of the fact that." Exceptional is Margaret Thrall's rendering "on condition that." She paraphrases: "For indeed, we who exist in the physical body groan with weariness. (But, for the Christian, this is a legitimate attitude to our physical existence only on condition that we do not want to be divested of somatic existence altogether, but rather to be further incorporated in the Body of Christ.)" The paraphrase is obscure, but the reminder that …

A Topical Sermon, Andrew Weyermann Sep 1968

A Topical Sermon, Andrew Weyermann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The sermon in this issue calls attention to the possibility of dealing with very specific and even rather difficult subjects from the pulpit. It is not necessary for sermons to restrict themselves to generalities, and it is possible for preachers to build on, rather than continually repeat, the “foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God." (Heb. 6:1)

Those "Divorce And Remarriage" Passages, Harry G. Coiner Jun 1968

Those "Divorce And Remarriage" Passages, Harry G. Coiner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The statements of Jesus on marriage and divorce were spoken within the context of (a) the particular milieu of His time and (b) His radical claims on those who would be His disciples. This is evident both in the context of His statements and in the particular wording of them.

Sexuality, Marriage, And Divorce In 1 Corinthians 6:12-7:16, Walter J. Bartling Jun 1968

Sexuality, Marriage, And Divorce In 1 Corinthians 6:12-7:16, Walter J. Bartling

Concordia Theological Monthly

No other social institution can begin to compete with marriage as a subject of ethical concern and reflection on all levels and in all periods of Biblical thought (for example, the opening chapters of Genesis, specific regulatory injunctions in the Torah, the ethical message of the prophets, wisdom literature - both canonical and extracanonical, the Sermon on the Mount, the Tables of Duties in Paul and Peter). Equally important for a study of marriage are the varying patterns of marital and familial life reflected in passing references and allusions in historical accounts (for example, the patriarchal family history, the chronicles …

References To Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, And Extrabiblical Literature As Noted In The Outer Margins Of The Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament, Trenton R. Ferro May 1968

References To Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, And Extrabiblical Literature As Noted In The Outer Margins Of The Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament, Trenton R. Ferro

Concordia Theological Monthly

One of the very helpful features of the Nestle Greek text is its outer margins that list passages useful for further study of the text. Frederick W. Danker has written a very useful survey of the wealth of possibilities that lie at the fingertips of the student, only "a few centimeters to the right" of the text. The references in these margins can be used as a small concordance; they can yield historical information; they can be used, in the case of the gospels, as a source for synoptic criticism; or they can yield a host of passages that are …

Any day now should bring with it a crop of good jokes about that prolific benefactor of our age, the dialog. The wonder is that the jokes have not appeared sooner, considering how quick men normally are to record their thanks for such a boon in their humor-the way they once did, remember, for GI Joe or for their pastors or for the soup kitchens or, in the days of great piety, for God.

On the morning of New Year's Day several years ago I stood in the outer court of Yasukuni Shrine in the city of Tokyo. New Year's Day, of course, is the highest festival day of the Shinto religion, when virtually all of the Japanese go to the shrines to pay their respects to their ancestors and begin the new year with "'a clean slate." For some time I watched with fascination as the worshipers bowed before the sanctuary, clapped their hands three times to awaken the attention of the spirits, cast their coins into the coffer, bought their good luck …

Living With The Brothers In The Lord, Arthur Carl Piepkorn Mar 1968

Living With The Brothers In The Lord, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Nov. 11, 1967-today-is the 49th anniversary of the armistice that initiated the end of the war between the Central Powers and the Allied Powers. It is also the 484th anniversary of the baptism of Martin Luther. On this day I as a Lutheran "brother in the Lord" am greatly pleased to have been asked to address this Roman Catholic diocesan Institute on Ecumenism. The fact that this day is both the anniversary of an armistice and the anniversary of a baptism is not, I hope, without its symbolic significance.

Private Confession: A 20th-Century Issue Seen From A 16th-Century Perspective, Theodore Jungkuntz Feb 1968

Private Confession: A 20th-Century Issue Seen From A 16th-Century Perspective, Theodore Jungkuntz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every knowledgeable theologian today is aware of the resurging interest in the question of private confession, i. e., auricular confession, or more precisely, the individual nature of confession. From professional theological journals to professional journals of psychology and psychiatry, from popular Time and Newsweek magazines to well-documented monographs and religious encyclopedia articles the question is being raised and answered in a variety of ways. The following is an attempt to permit the results of a thorough discussion of the issue more than four centuries ago in the decade from 1530 to 1540 to be of service in the contemporary search …

Principles For The Development Of Adult Premembership Instruction, Robert L. Conrad Feb 1968

Principles For The Development Of Adult Premembership Instruction, Robert L. Conrad

Concordia Theological Monthly

The need for a study was brought forcibly to the author's attention by his membership on a subcommittee of the Board of Parish Education of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The responsibility of the subcommittee is to formulate principles for adult premembership instruction in The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. The subcommittee could find no existing statement of principles, so it was forced to make a beginning on such a formulation.

Meditation, Oscar Cullmann, Paul M. Bretcher (Translator) Jan 1968

Meditation, Oscar Cullmann, Paul M. Bretcher (Translator)

Concordia Theological Monthly

This passage speaks of two realities that seem to exclude each other: the Holy Spirit and critical testing. We ask: Is it not of the very essence of the Holy Spirit that, where He is at work, critical testing ceases? And again: Must not critical testing, if it is to be fruitful, exclude all prophetic inspirations?
