Bachelor of Divinity
This study endeavors to determine whether the introductions and conclusions of c. E. Macartney’s sermons meet the standards of purpose, of variety, of style, of peculiar characteristics as laid down by reputable homileticians and speech critics . By the standard of purpose we mean what the homileticians and speech critics prescribe as the aim and intent of the introduction and conclusion to any sermon or speech. We understand by variety the number of different approaches made to the audience to avoid monotony in the exordiums and perorations used Sunday after Sunday. In the discussion of style, we endeavored to ascertain …

The Eucharistic Prayer- Its Use And Development, Henry C. Dequin
The Eucharistic Prayer- Its Use And Development, Henry C. Dequin
Bachelor of Divinity
The Eucharistic Prayer was originally the chief and only prayer in the liturgy; it was “the heart of the liturgy.” It derives its name from the fact that Christ “gave thanks" when He instituted the Lord's Supper. Thus it is a prayer of thanksgiving at the celebration of the Blessed Sacrament which states the meaning of the Eucharistic action, "Do this." "Since this prayer was originally ‘the' prayer, the only prayer in the whole rite. It was there that the whole meaning of the rite had to be stated, if it was to be put into words at all in …
Psychology In The Service Of A Lutheran Pastor, Alfred A. Bodtke
Psychology In The Service Of A Lutheran Pastor, Alfred A. Bodtke
Bachelor of Divinity
Every pastor ought to have some knowledge or psychology. It is true, a pastor is first and foremost a theologian. As a theologian he must learn rightly to interpret the Divine Word and bring its precious truth to the people under his care. In doing this, the pastor through God's grace and help is benefiting his people for time and for eternity. If in addition to being a good theologian, a pastor knows some or the most important principles of psychology, he will the better be able to apply this Word of God, especially so in the case of such …

It is the author’s hope that he may make some small contribution to the field of practical theology by passing on the results of his own investigation in this …

The Urban Church In A Transition Community, Vernon Roy Schreiber
The Urban Church In A Transition Community, Vernon Roy Schreiber
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of an urban community which is in the process of changing status upon the life of' a church in that community. To proceed in this study it was first necessary to establish the presence of distinguishable communities in an urban setting and to determine the pattern of change which might be present in such communities. However, before the role of the church in such communities could be examined, the writer felt it necessary to present a brief and admittedly incomplete study of urban social forces upon the individual. This procedure …

A Survey Of The Confirmation Instruction Of The Children Within A Pastoral Conference, Robert T. Koehler

Confirmation .instruction of children is the foundation of the work of the pastor. During his period of contact with the catechumens he can strengthen the personal Christianity of the children. He has the children in the time of their lives when their minds are eager and susceptible. A good catechist through his instruction lays a solid foundation for a congregation of staunch believers in future years. Good confirmation instruction makes the preaching more efficient, makes the work with troubled souls easier, and increases the spirit of love between pastor and catechumens. A bad catechist will usually produce contrary results. The …

Paul, The Pastor (His Corinthian Ministry), David Paul Bergmann

Here, in this city of lewdness and immorality, of gross dishonesty and crying sins, the Apostle Paul preached the message of Christ Crucified. He rarely stayed in any city as long as he did in Corinth. Christ was the Savior even of publicans and sinners, hence even this stronghold of iniquity and vice was to be conquered with the Gospel of Christ.

The Preaching Of The Gospel As The Motive Power For Good Works, Philip H. Lochhaas
Bachelor of Divinity
The problem, then, with which this paper shall deal is this: “On what basis and in what manner shall a Christian minister urge his people to perform good works?" This shall be seen, first of all, from the Bible, both the Old and the New Testaments, the unalterable Word of God, which clearly sets forth the motivation for good works. It shall be seen, secondly, that the Scriptural motivation is clearly and correctly set forth in the Symbolical nooks of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Relation Of The Common Service To The Roman Mass, Martin Louis Russert
Relation Of The Common Service To The Roman Mass, Martin Louis Russert
Bachelor of Divinity
In this thesis, it is the purpose of the writer to show the relation of the Common Service to the Roman Mass. The Common Service is no doubt a derivative from the Roman Mass. When Luther set himself to the task of purifying the service which he found, he had to deal with the Roman Mass. Luther’s Formula Missae followed the Roman Mass quite faithfully in its main parts. The Roman Mass, however, did not spring up all at once. It was a gradual process. Although the Mass is almost the same as it was in the days of the …

The Lutheran Army Chaplain, Walther A. Huchthausen
The Lutheran Army Chaplain, Walther A. Huchthausen
Bachelor of Divinity
To describe adequately the Lutheran Army chaplain is a little more difficult. Although all the material mentioned would apply to him in a general way, other factors need to be brought into the picture which are not given expression in any of the literature that has been produced about the chaplain and his work. The doctrinal position of our Church, its polity, its missionary character, and its devotion to the Holy Scriptures as the only norm of doctrine and rule of life are all matters which affect the status of the Lutheran Army chaplain, emphasize his need, and tend to …
An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt
An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt
Bachelor of Divinity
Lutheran hymnals continue to increase in size and in choice of hymn tunes. A brief study of The Lutheran Hymnal (1941) of the Missouri Synod shows that the composers of the 380 tunes of the hymnal come in the main from three countries: 18 from America, 59 from England, and 58 from Germany. This trend is borne out in the other Lutheran hymnals published in America during the first 40 years of this century, to perhaps an even more marked degree. If so many of these tunes are coming into the Lutheran Services from extra-Lutheran sources, we also do well …

Native Christian Movements In The Philippine Islands, Arnold Strohschein
Native Christian Movements In The Philippine Islands, Arnold Strohschein

The story of the Independent Filipino Church is actually the story of one man, Bishop Gregorio Aglipay. It was this man who led the Filipino masses in a break from Rome to get up a truly Filipino national Church, a Church that a Filipino would be proud to claim as his own a church organized end conducted altogether by Filipino people. Therefore, it is necessary that we go into the life and background or this prominent man, Gregorio Aglipay, that we might learn what prompted him to lead his people in a revolt against Rome.

The Historical And Grammatical Interpretations Of John Chrysostom Evaualting On The Basis Of His Homilies On Romans, Paul Gerhardt Littmann
Bachelor of Divinity
In view of the fact that the School of Antioch made no little contribution to the history of interpretation and that its hermeneutical principles are relevant to current problems or the Church, a brief study of the historical and grammatical interpretation of John Chrysostom, the most successful representative of the School of Antioch, may be of some value to pastors who wish to preserve the Church from error and to present the Gospel of Christ in all its truth and power. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to outline the hermeneutical principles of John Chrysostom and to show …
