Ideas To Disrupt: A Theology Of Ministry, Cindy Gonzalez
Ideas To Disrupt: A Theology Of Ministry, Cindy Gonzalez
Obsculta
A theology for ministry grounded on the call towards Woman Wisdom found in the Old Testament. Wisdom, in accordance to the book of Proverbs, leads the faithful closer to God. This theology of ministry makes a case for how only Wisdom may lead the faithful towards recognition of the need for radical inclusion in a world where social injustice continues to prevail.
Embracing And Engaging Holistically: A Pastoral Response To Youth (Or Anyone) Struggling With Anxiety And Depression, Meghan Stretar
Embracing And Engaging Holistically: A Pastoral Response To Youth (Or Anyone) Struggling With Anxiety And Depression, Meghan Stretar
Obsculta
Following Richard Osmer’s framework for practical theological interpretation, this paper’s overall task seeks to examine the question of how to engage and encourage youth who are struggling with anxiety and depression to seek counsel. Separated into four sections, the descriptive task invites the reader into the author’s personal experience before drawing attention to the larger societal issue at hand. The interpretive task invites psychologist Erik Erikson’s identity development into the conversation, inviting more questions and possible solutions. The third section, a theological interpretation and analysis examines the Rule of St. Benedict and the pastoral implications of the incarnation. Finally, the …

Solidarity And Suffering: Liberation Christology From Black And Womanist Perspectives, Kelsi Watters
Solidarity And Suffering: Liberation Christology From Black And Womanist Perspectives, Kelsi Watters
Obsculta
As an individual without sight, the author is committed to radical acceptance of and liberation for marginalized groups, as well as a commitment to deep solidarity with womanist theology. This piece focuses on a God whom we know, and love is actively, sacramentally, eternally present in Jesus Christ, whose self-emptying reflects radical solidarity with the oppressed. The author seeks to bring to light a Christological perspective that identifies with the marginalized Jesus – namely, black and womanist liberation theology. Black theology centralizes Jesus as Liberator of the oppressed. It is only in solidarity with the oppressed that we will ourselves …
Clericalism: Advancing The Theological Basis For Vatican Ii's Call For An Active Laity, William Orbih
Clericalism: Advancing The Theological Basis For Vatican Ii's Call For An Active Laity, William Orbih
Obsculta
It is the purpose of this paper to echo the Second Vatican Council’s call for a more active laity by, on the one hand, drawing atten-tion to the theological basis of this call (baptism), and, on the other hand, identifying and denouncing clericalism as the biggest obstacle to a more active laity in the church.

The Intimacy Of The Cross: Kenotic Love In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Sufjan Stevens, Kellen Troxell
Obsculta
This essay discusses how von Balthasar describes the relationship between the Father and the Son and how this has implications for the relationship between Christ and the Church. In addition, the author uses “To Be Alone With You” by Sufjan Stevens in order to further examine the implications of this relationship.
Instruments Of The Soul: Oikonomia And Bodily Asceticism, Aiden Putnam
Instruments Of The Soul: Oikonomia And Bodily Asceticism, Aiden Putnam
Obsculta
One strength of the monastic model as presented in the early desert literature is the pastoral responsiveness to individual needs, while one weakness of this model is the apparent divide between body and spirit. The current image many of today’s readers might have of the monastic desert is of wizened, brittle hermits continuously at war with their bodies in an attempt to subjugate the flesh. Rather, I would propose that the early monks can offer us a refreshing view of psychosomatic integrity, one that can speak to current discussions of pastoral accompaniment.
Hospitality And Contemplative Presence: A Local Reflection, Cindy Gonzalez
Hospitality And Contemplative Presence: A Local Reflection, Cindy Gonzalez
Obsculta
Nota Bene During an age of people not knowing their neighbors and of hurtful racial division throughout the United States, I find myself living in a small town. This reflection is a plea for people to look up from their smart-phones and welcome those who need hospitality. This is also a plea for all to become community-building advocates through contemplative presence.

The Art Of Dying As The Art Of Living: Exploring Buddhist Death Meditation As A Path To Human Flourishing, Kayla Stock
The Art Of Dying As The Art Of Living: Exploring Buddhist Death Meditation As A Path To Human Flourishing, Kayla Stock
Obsculta
Can spiritual practices that inform our ideas about death alleviate fear of death? Can they lead to human flourishing? To explore these questions, I will examine the Buddhist practice of death meditation, assessing the practice both theologically and scientifically, then discussing the merits of this practice toward the purposes of human flourishing. I will end with an exploration of the potential ministerial applications of Buddhist death meditation.

Homily: On The Transfiguration, James Voeller Ofm

The glorious event of the Transfiguration prepared the apostles in advance for the passion of Christ. This Gospel narrative in Mark has implications for vocational service. The present reflection is an exhortation for those who preach to “wake up the world”.

Informed And Formed By Theological Education, Kathleen A. Cahalan
School of Theology and Seminary Faculty Publications
This essay explores the author’s experiences of both the contributions and the limits of the varied ways in which the meaning and purpose of theological education have been understood: as a habitus, as liberating praxis, as faith seeking understanding, as the clerical paradigm, as scholarship for the church, as spiritual practice, and as practical knowing. With appreciation for each, she concludes that theological education is a disciplined way of life in search of wisdom for our times.

Integrative Learning For Practical Wisdom, Kathleen A. Cahalan

Why is “the very kind of knowledge that people need to live well—what we call practical wisdom—the least understood, the hardest to learn, and often the most devalued kind of knowledge?”6 This essay will explore the second question: Why is practical wisdom the hardest kind of knowledge to learn?
Eucharist: A Sign And Means Of Unity?, Isaiah Frederick O.S.B.
Eucharist: A Sign And Means Of Unity?, Isaiah Frederick O.S.B.
Obsculta
Per the Second Vatican Council, the Eucharist is to be a sign of unity and a means of grace. However, it often serves as a sign of disunity among Christian churches. This paper provides an understanding of the current unity that already exists among churches, and also an understanding of the final unity we seek. This final unity values and requires diversity among churches. This unity provides for a full extending of eucharistic hospitality.
On The Symbolic Nature Of Evangelization, Steven Drapalik
On The Symbolic Nature Of Evangelization, Steven Drapalik
Obsculta
Still often viewed as an action belonging solely to missionary societies, Catholic understanding of evangelization is lacking. Refusal to evangelize is refusal to act as a symbolic reality of Christ in the world, i.e. the Mystical body of Christ - the Church. This paper will demonstrate how evangelization is the primary way in which the Holy Spirit actualizes the Church as symbolic reality of the Mystical body of Christ in the world. When Catholics evangelize, their actions of witness and proclamation constitute participation in a process Louise-Marie Chauvet terms symbolic exchange whereby subjects kenotically give of themselves in order to …

Christ As Chrism, Christ Given Away, Anna Mercedes
Christ As Chrism, Christ Given Away, Anna Mercedes
Theology Faculty Publications
This article develops the concept of Christ not as static body but as chrism for bodies. Christ as chrism travels in the matrix of relationality, on a vector toward the benefit of others. Conceptualizing christ as chrism potentially avoids both exclusionary and colonizing tendencies in Christian polity, and frames a Christian ethics that, while vulnerable and risky, marks the sanctity of the one giving Christ away.

Observations On The Performative Force Of The Qyama And The Ihidaye, And Its Pertinancy Today, C. A. Chase
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Using contemporary social and art theory, with particular emphasis on the notion of performative, this paper examines the historical and theological context of a unique social and ecclesial phenomenon in 4th century Syria—the Sons and Daughters of the Covenant. By observing these committed laity as a ‘living performance,’ an exploration of the identity of the faithful, both severally and as a community, may be undertaken. This paper focuses on the relation of such a performative to notions of Christology and anthropology, with an eye towards today’s laity and their seeking for identity in a complex world of competing shifting …

Consideration Of The Church's Identity And Mission, Predicated On The Church Be-Ing 'Ligamen' (Bond), C. A. Chase
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
In 1965, the Roman Catholic Church, in Gaudium et spes, declared to the world: this community realizes that it is truly linked with mankind and its history by the deepest of bonds (GS 1). Shifting her identity from being one in opposition to the modern world, she announced the possibility of becoming the very bond (ligamen) binding diverse human communities and nations of the world, whilst existing as a function, a light, an energy (GS 42). Framed against the classical understanding of ecclesia as a perfect society, and the fact that this was no longer realistic in …
Embracing Poverty Of Spirit In College Life, April L. Donovan
Embracing Poverty Of Spirit In College Life, April L. Donovan
Obsculta
In this essay I will first be addressing the relation between Johannes Baptist Metz’s Poverty of Spirit and college life. This will lead into an examination of how embracing poverty of spirit influences interpersonal relationships, and finally a call to the Church to encourage healthy dating relationships to foster spiritual development and poverty of spirit within romantic relationships. This paper will explore a Christian understanding of what it means to embrace poverty of spirit in college, and how the Church can show how poverty of spirit should affect dating relationships.

Preserving Moral Recognition In The Face Of Aggression: Aikido As A Practice Of Physical Intersubjectivity, Charles W. Wright
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Practitioners of Aikido advance the claim, peculiar to many, that martial training can support moral action. This essay examines the claim by exploring communicative structures implicit in the response to attack made possible by this art's techniques. This exploration reveals three dimensions of intersubjectivity embedded in the practice of Aikido, dimensions that explicate the ethical imperative of the art.
