Leland Elhard is an Associate Professor of pastoral theology at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio (ALC). He spent four weeks this past summer observing, visiting, and working with the people of the Lutheran churches in the near east side of Baltimore, Maryland, sponsored by the Mutual Enrichment Program of LHRAA. Into the middle of the "Denver debate" - the sometimes bitter, sometimes restrained, but always intense expressions of opinion - came a group of black Lutherans bringing their gift of love. Delegates, visitors, and members of the Black Youth Unlimited stood together on the platform in the convention hall.

The Reverend Albert Pero of Detroit, President of the Association of Black Lutheran Churchmen, Mr. Sherman Beverly, high school teacher and president of the Chicago Northwest Suburban chapter of LHRAA, and the Reverend Will Herzfeld of Oakland, California and former LHRAA board member, spoke for the group.

Focusing on PEOPLE. there will be displays and gathering centers involving groups and agencies specifically ministering to the sociological, physical, and economic needs in our world.

James Forman, director of the National Black Economic Development Conference, interrupted the service at Riverside Church, New York, on Sunday, May 3, when he stood in the chancel and read a list of demands made by his organization against the church. Riverside Church, located at Riverside Drive and 120th Street, just west of Harlem, has been singled out, Forman said, "because it is in the heart of the Harlem community, as are a few other racist institutions."

"I feel very uneasy about the reading of the names of all the U.S. fatalities in Vietnam," observed Hazaiah Williams, black clergyman from Oakland. Rev. Williams was addressing a "moratorium" assembly in Valparaiso University's Chapel. He made the remark as the subdued voices of students continued the 24 hour-long recitations of names of the war dead.

Several months ago, the sanitation workers in Oklahoma City requested improved working conditions and more pay. Although some of their demands were met the specific requests for $100 a month pay raise and 5-man crews were not met, and the workers set a strike date of August 19.

The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod is endeavoring to take its verbal commitment to the concern of housing needs seriously. February 16 marks the day of a church-wide effort to gather a million dollar offering in a program called "Keys for Christ."

It all started in New York in 1967 when delegates of the church assembled in convention wanted to give substance to resolutions of earlier conventions that spoke more generally in this matter.

LHRAA's Board of Directors has scheduled its 1969 Institute on Human Relations for Chicago for the week-end of June 27 to 29.

The decision calls for moving the site of the Institute from Valparaiso University to the Lutheran School of Theology. The meetings will be on Chicago's South Side in a setting where the issues of racial and urban crisis are close at hand.

The entire format - and goals - of this year's Institute will differ greatly from previous years.

Fred Hampton, Illinois chairman of the Black Panther Party, is dead. So is Panther Mark Clark.

State's Attorney Edwin Hanrahan in a TV interview commended the officers who "bravely and with restraint" participated in the pre-dawn raid on Thursday December 4, when the shoot-out occurred.

Many in Chicago's black community and many whites are convinced that Hanrahan's men murdered Hampton as he slept.

"Don't keep giving us things!" was the passionate, slow, soft-spoken plea of Ralph Red Fox, a Cheyenne from Lame Deer, Montana. Observing that the life of the reservation Indian is managed and controlled to the point where he feels stifled and suffocated, Red Fox claimed that the man on the reservation has had his manhood seized from him.

As headquarters for its activities the group has reserved the Junior Ball Room of the Hilton Hotel where many of the delegates will be housed during the convention of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, July 11-19, 1969.

Fifty-two of the eighty black clergymen of the three major Lutheran church bodies met in Chicago, May 7 to 10, to discuss problems common to their ministry and evolve a strategy for helping the church through the years ahead.

After meeting in closed assembly for a day and a half, the pastors opened sessions to white church leaders to share concerns with them. On hand also for the consultation were the presidents of the ALC, Mo. Synod, and LCA, Doctors Schiotz, Harms and Fry.

A Missouri Synod Lutheran pastor has been appointed to coordinate the planning of the new Portland, Ore. Model Cities program. Rev. Paul J. Schulze, director of the Church-Community Action Program for the Portland Council of Churches and a 1951 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, has been granted $141,000 from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development for the first year of planning in the Model Cities program.

The Board of Directors of the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America has designated Mr. and Mrs. Chris McNair of Birmingham, Alabama, to receive the Mind of Christ Award.

The award is presented annually in connection with the Saturday evening dinner of the Valparaiso University Institute on Human Relations.

The Reverend Joseph Ellwanger of Milwaukee who formerly served at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Birmingham, Alabama where Mr. McNair is a member, was invited to make the presentation.

From its earliest days LHRAA has wanted to "help the church fill the role of leadership in the field of human relations assigned to her by her Lord." Specific care was taken not to isolate that ministry to problems in Negro-white relations. Accordingly we have, through the years, addressed ourselves to areas involving the Indian American, Appalachian whites, Puerto Ricans, migrant workers, victims of poverty, and others.

Some forty-five professional church workers visited Holy Family Lutheran Church (ALC) last summer to hear Pastor Fred Downing speak of his ministry there. Describing his heavily populated north side Chicago neighborhood, he told of the tensions that might rupture into riot at any moment. He alluded to manifest resentment and hostility by black towards white. He spoke of increased evidence of "soul brother" signs in the windows of small Negro-owned businesses.

The Lutheran Human Relations Association of Chicago has prepared a set of fifteen theses urging human relations reforms within the Church in celebration of the 450th anniversary of the Reformation Nov. 5.

The theses address themselves largely to the problems the church of 1967 faces in ministering faithfully for its Lord. Their concern is subsumed under the theses' title, "Reform is the Proper Celebration of Reformation."

Theology professors may be working side by side with inner city pastors this summer, according to a Wheat Ridge Foundation announcement.

The inner city program, proposed by LHRAA and financed by the Wheat Ridge organization, is scheduled to begin this summer and to be in full operation by the summer of 1968.

After Pastor Joseph Lavelais of Philadelphia had conducted opening devotions at the Conference on Church and Social Change at Chicago's Concord-O'Hare Inn, Chairman Wiederaenders presented for adoption an agenda which had been mailed to participants prior to the meeting.

A motion from the floor was adopted by a large majority that the printed agenda be set aside. Voices from the floor indicated an eagerness to discuss the church's commitment and participation in filling a meaningful role in the social problems of the day as they impinge upon the church and the communities it serves.

Cleveland's Lutheran Pastors have set in motion a project aimed at finding a more effective way of ministering to that city's intense human relations problems. The scene of one of last year's worst riots, Cleveland has relatively little to show for changing the conditions that provided the setting for last summer's outbursts.

Valparaiso University's 1967 Workshop in Human Relations for Professional Church Workers will feature Dr. Will Campbell. Dr. Campbell, who will speak to the Human Relations Institute on the Valparaiso campus three days earlier, will lecture to Workshop participants twice.

The theme of this year's Workshop is THE COMMUNICATING MINISTRY. Dr. Campbell's first presentation will be "Listening to Those to Whom We Intend to Communicate"; his second: "Balance of Words and Acts in Ministry. "
