This chapter identifies the results of Kant's philosophical system on the contemporary discussion concerning an inerrant revelation. Knowledge, for Kant, is possible only as the forms and categories of the mind organize the raw data of the senses. Beyond this phenomenal world, the mind can only postulate what must or ought to be. It cannot know what is. The first postulate of this practical reasoning is freedom. The individual is autonomous, knows the good, and is capable of willing and doing as he ought.

These are among the epithets which Thomas Jefferson applied to the clergy of the Protestant denominations and of the Roman Catholic Church as well. It was they who "perverted" the principles of Jesus "into an engine for enslaving mankind"; it was the Christian "priesthood" who had turned organized religion into a "mere contrivance to filch wealth and power" for themselves; they were the ones who throughout history had persecuted rational men for refusing to swallow "their impious heresies." Of what importance is this question of atheism? Always of vital consequence to man and mankind, it presents today the paramount problem confronting humanity. In every nation, in every class of society we see godlessness daily making further encroachments upon the domains wherein formerly man was safely protected by faith in God. In Russia and Mexico atheism bas become a part of political domination; the German government seems constantly more eager to foist paganism upon its people; in America only fifty percent of the people are enrolled in any church.
