This study addressed itself to identifying dominant motivational influences prompting seminary attendance of ninth and eleventh grade students living along the Wasatch Front in the state of Utah and to determine if these motivational influences were related to stated objectives of the LDS seminary program. The sample consisted of twelve randomly selected cluster groups of seminary classes from the Ogden, Salt Lake City, and Provo-Orem areas. Factors relative to stated objectives and to entertainment were incorporated in the survey questionnaire, Survey of Attendance Rationale, used for data collection. The purpose of this study was to show that the present Student Evaluation of Seminary (SES) provides the seminary teacher with an inadequate estimate of his credibility in the classroom, as perceived by his students. To accomplish this goal, a list of student responses to questions about their seminary teachers was developed and analyzed. The results indicated that not all factors of teacher credibility as perceived by the seminary students were being measured by the SES.

This thesis is the description, defense and critique of a course developed to teach gospel principles to 7- through 9-year-old children. The development process through which the course went, its formative evaluations and summative evaluation are described. The summative evaluation employed the pretest-posttest control group design. Thirty children, ages 7 through 9, were in the evaluation. After the pretest, 15 of the children were taught the 19-lesson course by their parents during a 23-day period. Teaching is an art based upon the carefully considered scientific principles of pedagogy; therefore, teacher training has been an established policy of the Sunday School in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A fundamental educational responsibility in the Church is the preparation of members to teach well by providing them with methods for successful instruction. To accomplish this objective, the Sunday School developed a teacher training program whereby members became more proficient teachers.

This study sought to determine why only about one half of the potential Latter-day Saint students in grades nine through twelve in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area enroll in early morning seminary each year, why so many students attended poorly or discontinued part way through 1973-74, and what effect the increase in the price of gasoline had on attendance. About 40 percent of the potential students and their parents, all eight of their bishops, and all thirteen seminary teachers responded to a mailed questionnaire.
The main reasons for non-enrollment were inactivity in the LDS Church, disinterest in seminary, and difficulty finding …

1. There is a tremendous need in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for qualified, spiritually-motivating teachers.

This thesis explores the problems encountered by Latter-day Saints in establishing released time privileges for the Central Idaho Seminary District. A careful examination of minutes of state and local school boards, of L.D.S. Church Boards of Education, and of local seminary histories plus personal interviews determined which problems had been resolved.
The major problems were 1) whether released time was constitutional; 2) whether high school credit should be given for religious instruction; 3) getting good ethical men to serve on school boards; 4) creating good working relationships between public school and the seminary; and 5) overcoming the feeling that the …

The purpose of the study was to determine what degree of understanding third year graduates of the SLVN Seminary District had of the nature and mission of Christ.
The study was composed of a random sample of 200 third year seminary graduates. Each participant answered a questionnaire designed to test his understanding of the nature and mission of Christ. The responses were tabulated and presented in written and illustrative form.

Religious education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given by the seminaries is to help youth achieve a meaningful testimony that God lives, Jesus is the Christ, and Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. The purpose of this study was to determine why some youth were not taking advantage of this training by enrolling in seminary.

This thesis is a study of the development, use and value of a method of teaching the scriptures called Seminary Bowl from its beginning in 1964-65 to the present day.
The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which the full-time teachers of the seminary program are using Seminary Bowl and to have teachers and students evaluate this method of teaching the scriptures.

The purpose of this study was to construct a physical fitness program for the needs of full-time missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Two groups, a control and experimental, were selected from the missionaries entering the Language Training Mission on February 16, 1972. The experimental group, consisting of thirty-two subjects, participated in a structured physical fitness class for seven weeks. The control group, consisting of twenty students, participated in no structured program. Each group took a pre- and post-test consisting of four strength factor tests and Cooper's twelve-minute run.

The purpose of this study was to make an evaluation of Instructional Television in the College of Religious Instruction at the Brigham Young University.
The overall findings of the study indicate that there was much discontent manifest, from both students and faculty, with the present TV enrichment program. This discontent seemed to be strongest in the areas of the types of presentations made on TV, the quality of the productions, and that the TV presentations were required and not optional. Recognizing a need to develop religious instructional material for mentally retarded seminary students of the L.D.S. Church, this study was designed to validate an instructional model set up to teach the concept of faith.
Thirty-four mentally retarded seminary students were randomly assigned to six control groups and six experimental groups. Each group was given a sixteen question pre-test. Then, the next day each experimental group was given instructional treatment and the post-test, while the control groups only received the post-test. The purpose of this project was to establish an instructional materials program and center in the Snake River Seminary District to provide the equipment, materials, and technical skill necessary to enable local production of teacher conceived instructional aids. This was accomplished only after a majority of the teachers had, by a demonstration, been convinced of their need for production facilities.
The equipment and services to be included in the IMC were determined by a survey of teachers' desires and by recommendations from the District Audiovisual Committee, and then funds were raised by a special district project to procure them.

It was the purpose of this study (1) to analyze the teaching methods of the L.D.S. and non-L.D.S. religious educational movements in Southeastern Utah among the Indians since 1943; and (2) to determine the similarities and differences between the teaching methods of these religious educational movements.
It was found that (1) the teaching methods used among the Indians in the earlier period of religious instruction were more typical of the culture and traditions of the Indian people than the methods used today, (2) the teaching methods most frequently used were: instructional singing, workbooks, catechization, lecture, storytelling, testimony and spiritual experiences …

This study is an examination, in terms of critical areas identified by correlation, of the 1967-68 lesson manuals prepared for high school age LDS youth by the teaching organizations of the Church responsible for implementing a correlated religious education program for this age group.
Major findings center around the answers to the questions formulated to limit and analyze the problem of this study, and were obtained by examining the lesson manuals and identifying the major themes or concepts contained in them. The purpose of this study was twofold: to determine the attitudes of students toward different parts and methods of grading in LDS Seminary, and to determine if significant differences exist in attitudes of students toward their class and teacher when using different methods of grading including a suggested method.
The study reported the areas most preferred by students about grading and the areas least preferred. It reported the evaluation of the suggested method of grading including those areas of most value to the students and those of least value.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of seminary home study materials within the early morning seminary classroom as a supplementary aid to the teacher, measuring changes in student's attitude, church activity, and knowledge of the New Testament.
The sample consisted of 130 students in experimental and control groups in six early morning seminary classes in the San Diego, California area during the 1968-69 school year. Six teachers participated in the study and an instrument was used as a pre and a post test to evaluate progress. The data was tabulated by an IBM computer.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there were differences in the basic philosophies of Seminary Teachers who were ranked highest and lowest by experienced coordinators. It also sought to determine which philosophical background was associated with the most successful teachers, and which with the least successful.
Seminary teachers of three districts were surveyed by the Ames Inventory, and each coordinator identified his ten most successful and least successful teachers. The results of the Inventory and the teacher rankings were tabulated and compared, using Chi Square analysis to determine if differences were significant.

The study was composed of a sample of 475 seminary students in non-credit released time and early morning seminary classes, and twenty seminary teachers. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to develop criteria for creating thematic literature units appropriate to the English language facility and to the culture of students in the LDS secondary schools in the South Pacific, and (b) to create three thematic literature units at the Form 5 (11th grade) level which would exemplify the recommended criteria.
An analysis of questionnaire responses revealed that a concept-centered approach to literature should take precedence, with geographical literature—especially Polynesian—also receiving emphasis. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the LDS Seminary Scripture Chase in the following areas: (1) Principles of learning involved; (2) Percentage of full-time teachers using the Scripture Chase; (3) Teacher evaluation of the Scripture Chase in terms of (a) teacher training in the Scripture Chase, (b) student involvement and application, (c) areas of effectiveness and (d) evaluation and rating of the over-all program.

This study was designed to evaluate the L.D.S. institute instructors use of statements made by leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These leaders have instructed Church school teachers to teach what the prophets have said and not the teachers own ideas or views on doctrine.
