The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been a proselyting organization almost since its founding. The first missionary for the Church was Samuel Harrison Smith, who was sent by his brother Joseph Smith to sell The Book of Mormon in the area of Livonia, New York. Elder Orson Pratt preached the first sermon outside of the United States, and because many of the listeners had relatives in England, the Church was able to introduce its message to the people of Great Britain. "The Readiness of the World for the Mission" or "for the Gospel" has been a favorite argument in the promotion of the mission in Protestant churches for at least a century and a half. Thus John M. Mason, preaching in 1797, exulted in the fact that by the providence of God the most formidable obstacles to the spread of the faith, such as travel, language, manners, had already been overcome by those persons who were primarily serving science, wealth, and fame.

The "History of the Southern States Mission, 1831-1861," traces the development of a system of proselyting in the southeastern United States, and its effect on the lives of both missionaries and converts who embraced the principles of the restored gospel taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This study includes an examination of twenty-eight personal missionary journals, and consequently gives a valid picture of Latter-day Saint objectives and the sacrifices necessary to achieve them. Their objectives were to carry the message to the world and build up the Kingdom of God.

In the wake of the Protestant penetration into the Near East, Jacob Spori was sent to Constantinople in 1884 to open a mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. Spori and later his companion, Joseph M. Tanner, preached first to the Europeans of Constantinople, then projected their efforts down into the major cities of Palestine. Among the German colonists, the missionaries found several valuable converts, most of whom emigrated to Utah.

Ferdinand F. Hintze gained the title "Father of the Armenian Mission" through his extensive preaching tours throughout the interior of Asia Minor. He found …

Lutherans in India have become a considerable factor among Christians. The first Protestant missionaries, Ziegenbalg and Pluetschau, were Lutherans. Lutheran missionaries had a strong influence in the early work of some of the non-Lutheran missions in South India. They can be found in the southern tip near Nagercoil, north and east of Calcutta near the Burma border, in central India. and even in Pakistan. There are Lutherans who speak Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Santali, Briya and several other languages and dialects. History of the first 13 years of the Santee Normal Training School, written by one of the founders of the school. The Riggs family lived with and interacted with members of several indigenous groups while setting up and operating the school; the book records the traditions and customs of this with whom the Riggs' interacted.

Contains numerous images and drawings. Drawings were made by Reuben Dorian, a Santee student.

The book was printed by students at the Santee Normal Training School.
