Guess Who's Coming To Worship? Worship And Evangelism, Patrick R. Keifert Jan 1989

Guess Who's Coming To Worship? Worship And Evangelism, Patrick R. Keifert

    Faculty Publications

Too many congregations of mainline churches profess that they welcome strangers but are inhospitable when the stranger comes to worship. They know that worship is the single most important ingredient in why people join and remain active members in a congregation. They realize that they need to welcome strangers, so they try to be a warm, open family. Some of them believe they have achieved this model, but few do achieve it. The key to turning this situation around lies in the congregation’s attitude toward the stranger. This is especially true of the attitude of those who plan and lead …

Gottfried Arnold On Worship A Translation From Die Erste Liebe, 1696, Paul Wagner Jan 1989

This dissertation is intended as a contribution to the ongoing study of worship among the Pietists; as such it presents for the first time an English translation from book two of Die Erste Liebe, chapter one “Von ihrem Gebet zu Gott.” Here Arnold outlines his view of worship which he understands to have been the view of …

A Neurophysiological Model Of Trance With Practical Application, Alexander Sasha Antony Marusich Jan 1989

A Neurophysiological Model Of Trance With Practical Application, Alexander Sasha Antony Marusich

    Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Certain techniques are virtually universal in the production of religious trance. Rhythmic drumming, chanting, singing and vigorous dancing, for instance, are all commonly accepted as playing significant roles in the induction of trance states. But the effectiveness of these techniques has yet to be explained fully. Contemporary neurophysiological and brain sciences can provide the basis for a more comprehensive explanation of trance induction techniques and trance states. In accounting for trance within a neurophysiological model, two questions are fundamental. What kind of neurophysiological activity typifies a trance state? And how do trance induction techniques stimulate and generate the neurophysiological dynamics …
