In the New Testament, the line "And he told them a parable ... " is as familiar and as redolent of promise as the line "Once upon a time ... " is in children's literature. Parables are the spine of Jesus' teachings, lending the gospel narratives strength and structure. Mark once went so far as to say that Jesus did not teach anything without telling a parable. Symposium on Worship Archive

We wrote this welcome letter during Epiphany, remembering how the star of Bethlehem drew the Maji to the place where the Christ child lay. They came from the Middle East, possibly from Iraq, and they traveled to Bethlehem–troubled spots then and still now, occupied territories with terrible violence. They were looking for the newborn King, not knowing whom they were seeking, but following the star. We pray that each of you also came to seek the light of Christ, to offer him your gifts of praise, returning to Christ the gifts already received–in preaching, music, drama, visual arts, and hospitality. …

Developing A Model For An Incarnational Ministry At The Webb Chapel Church Of Christ, L. Bert Alexander Jan 2009

Developing A Model For An Incarnational Ministry At The Webb Chapel Church Of Christ, L. Bert Alexander

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This doctor of ministry thesis presents the results of a project to promote the development of an incarnational ministry at the Webb Chapel Church of Christ. This intervention employed a team of Webb Chapel opinion leaders representative of various subgroups of the congregation. In the fall of 2008, this group met for eight sessions to discuss the self-emptying practices of Jesus and the need for his followers to emulate those self-emptying practices in their individual lives. Through interaction in the eight sessions, the group developed a model by which self-emptying practices could be implemented at Webb Chapel. Evaluation of the …

For All What Saints? Preaching All Saints Day, Mark A. Granquist Oct 2008

For All What Saints? Preaching All Saints Day, Mark A. Granquist

Faculty Publications

American culture has either trivialized All Saints Eve into a time of free candy or idealized All Saints Day as a festival of the unachievable. The texts are more real than that—and so is sainthood.

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Geisler, Carol A. "An Obedient Defense of Disobedience: The Brothers of the Common Life and the Boundaries of Religion." Ph.D. diss., St. Louis: Concordia Seminary, 2008. 237 pp.

Like many of their contemporaries, the priests, clerics, and laity of the fourteenth century spiritual movement the devotio moderna wished to imitate the lifestyle of Christ, his apostles, and the earliest Christians. Inspired by the preaching and ideals of the movement's founder, Geert Grote, these men and women of the Low Countries came to be called the Brothers and Sisters of the Common Life. They pursued the apostolic life in communities, following …

What Hath Silicon Valley To Do With Jerusalem? Technological Innovation And Ancient Practice In Worship, Mark Roeda Jan 2008

What Hath Silicon Valley To Do With Jerusalem? Technological Innovation And Ancient Practice In Worship, Mark Roeda

Symposium on Worship Archive

Worship is something we do, not observe. Because technology supplies us with the capacity to program and record content which it will then present on demand, utilizing technology in worship can remove the sense of immediacy (in terms of both time and space) of worship, the sense that this is something we are doing now, together. In short, it risks reducing us to passive observers of the acts of worship.
