Guiding Preachers In Development Of Narrative Skills For Sermon Illustrations, Austin B. Tucker Jan 2005

Guiding Preachers In Development Of Narrative Skills For Sermon Illustrations, Austin B. Tucker

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Preachers can and must cultivate storytelling skills. They may find help in a Narration Worksheet charting the essential elements of story: plot, setting, character, point of view, and unity. A Plot Movements Worksheet helps keep the narrative flowing from situation, through stress and searching to solution and a new situation.

Joseph Smith’S Many Histories, Richard Bushman Jan 2005

Joseph Smith’S Many Histories, Richard Bushman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

I wish to explore, in broad general terms, the histories to which historians have attached Joseph Smith. As you can imagine, the context in which he is placed profoundly affects how people see the Prophet, since the history selected for a subject colors everything about it. Is he a money-digger like hundreds of other superstitious Yankees in his day, a religious fanatic like Muhammad was thought to be in Joseph’s time, a prophet like Moses, a religious revolutionary like Jesus? To a large extent, Joseph Smith assumes the character of the history selected for him. The broader the historical context, …

Joseph Smith And Abraham Lincoln, Richard Bushman Jan 2005

Joseph Smith And Abraham Lincoln, Richard Bushman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

In a letter to his friend John Stuart, dated March 1, 1840, Abraham Lincoln wrote that Joseph Smith had recently passed through Springfield, Illinois. In a tantalizingly brief report, Lincoln told Stuart that "Speed [another close friend] says he wrote you what Jo. Smith said about you as he passed here. We will procure the names of some of his people here and send them to you before long." The nature of Joseph's comment on Stuart can only be surmised. Joseph had spent the winter in Washington D.C., vainly seeking compensation for the Saints' losses in Missouri in 1839. He …

Geza Vermes And The Third Quest For The Historical Jesus: A Review Essay On ‘Jesus In His Jewish Context’, Gary R. Habermas Jan 2004

Geza Vermes And The Third Quest For The Historical Jesus: A Review Essay On ‘Jesus In His Jewish Context’, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

During the last few decades, the subject of the historical Jesus has once again moved into the center of scholarly studies among New Testament historians, exegetes, and theologians. In stark contrast to the movements of the nineteenth and mid-twentieth century, which exhibited very different concerns, the chief focus of the third quest for the historical Jesus is the Jewish background, setting, and context for Jesus' life and teachings. In addition to Jesus' teachings, the social sciences have supplied much of the backdrop regarding Jesus' surroundings.

What Do You Mean “Truth Through Personality”? The Phillips Brooks Definition Of Preaching In Historical Context, Austin B. Tucker Jan 2004

What Do You Mean “Truth Through Personality”? The Phillips Brooks Definition Of Preaching In Historical Context, Austin B. Tucker

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Applying historical-grammatical hermeneutics to the Brooks definition of preaching as truth through personality helps us hear Brooks say that the sum of all truth is Christ. His truth does not stand in indifference to his person as some theologians insisted. By personality Brooks stressed not only the divine person of Christ but also the preacher” character. The contemporary usage of both words, the eight lectures in context, and the colorful history of the 1870” tell the story.

The ‘Earth-Dwellers’ And The ‘Heaven-Dwellers’ In Revelation: An Overlooked Interpretive Key, A. Boyd Luter Oct 2003

The ‘Earth-Dwellers’ And The ‘Heaven-Dwellers’ In Revelation: An Overlooked Interpretive Key, A. Boyd Luter

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Research and publication on the Book of Revelation has escalated to a frenetic pace. In such a climate, in which, seemingly, every exegetical and theological nuance has been treated from virtually every conceivable angle, it would seem unlikely that any material of significance would be overlooked. However, as will be seen, careful study of two overlooked groups in the Apocalypse, to whom we will refer, shorthand, as the "earth dwellers" and the "heaven dwellers," provides considerable insight in regard to both the exegesis and biblical theology of this challenging book. Further, building from the exegetical/biblical theology conclusions, it is possible …

The Diffusion Of Christianity Among Urban Chinese People In Diaspora: The Case Of Metropolitan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wilbur P. Stone

ATS Dissertations

This study identifies various factors involved in the diffusion of Christianity and the growth and expansion of the church among the urban Chinese diaspora in the greater Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area (KL) of Maluysia. Specifically, the research is designed to determine whether principles and theories related to the diffusion of innovations could inform or help explain the diffusion of Christianity and growth of the church. The study is further informed by insights, principles, and theories from literature related to other areas of study including Chinese religion and culture, religious conversion studies, church growth, urban ministry, and missiology. In addition to …
