Near Death Experiences And The Evidence - A Review Essay, Gary R. Habermas
Near Death Experiences And The Evidence - A Review Essay, Gary R. Habermas
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
It is probably an understatement to say that the phenomena of near-death experiences (NDEs) is riding a massive wave of popularity and has been for much of the last twenty years. Best-selling books, firsthand articles, television documentaries and movies regularly describe the fascination we have with stories "from the other side." The typically-reported sensations are now common parlance: floating above one's dying body, travelling down a dark tunnel, sensing the presence of departed loved ones or spiritual beings, and experiencing a Being of light.
From a more critical perspective, one problem with this popularity is that friends and foes alike …

Imago Dei And The Appreciation Of Beauty, Michael S. Jones
SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations
"Man does not live by bread alone ... " Human life embraces more than just 'living' (material survival); the human soul thrives on many ambiguous metaphysical elements. One of these elements is beauty. The question motivating this article is the ubiquitous 'why'; why do people find beauty in various elements of their environment? Put another way, what is it that enables one to appreciate beauty? The thesis of this article is that a person's ability to appreciate beauty is a result of being created in the image of God.

A Canonical-Critical Study Of Selected Traditions In The Book Of Joel, David D. Pettus
A Canonical-Critical Study Of Selected Traditions In The Book Of Joel, David D. Pettus
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
The book of Joel presents a myriad of problems to the honest interpreter. For example, the inability to date firmly the book makes it exceedingly difficult to find an original meaning for the work. In addition, the failure of scholars to come to a consensus on the connection between the locust plague and the Day of Yahweh theme in the book exacerbates the interpretive problems further. This dissertation is an attempt to elucidate the meaning of the book of Joel by focusing on the Day of Yahweh and its subthemes in the book via the methodology of canonical criticism. Canonical …

New Testament Church Government: Fidelity And Flexibility, A. Boyd Luter
New Testament Church Government: Fidelity And Flexibility, A. Boyd Luter
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
In spite of disagreement over what constitutes the biblical form of local church government, it is still normally assumed that all churches should have the same governmental structure and that the qualifications for a particular leadership position should be the same . . Such an approach pours all the major structure and qualification passages to the same mold, ignoring significant evidence for “flexibility” in regard to churches at different stages of growth. Particularly suggestive are variations between the supposed “twin” passages: 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-9. Careful consideration of the similarities and differences leads to the conclusion that it …
