Environmentalism: Flint Michigan Water Crisis, Zamzam Mohammed Jan 2023

Environmentalism: Flint Michigan Water Crisis, Zamzam Mohammed

Religion: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

This essay examines the public health hazard of Flint Michigan that affected tens of thousands of individuals predominately Black and African Americans. This event was not only systematic, but it portrayed a sense of racial bias and environmental injustice. Not only were Flint residents getting sick due to the unhealthy supply of water source but they were silenced. Unfortunately Black and African Americans felt undermined and oppressed. The underdevelopment and unethical abandonment of the city portrays how much power and authority the city officials possess. Their disregard for the health hazard proves that they care more about monetary gain than …

Hospitality As Companionship And Justice, Laura Stivers Oct 2014

Hospitality As Companionship And Justice, Laura Stivers

Laura Stivers

My work has not been in direct ministry to people who are homeless but instead I have been involved in writing, teaching, and organizing to do the work of justice. . .to end homelessness as this homeless poet asks us to do. Organizing for justice through structural change (e.g. affordable housing, good work for all, universal healthcare, no wars, etc.) is of paramount importance. It is our fight. The problem of homelessness is less about the individuals who find themselves without a place to sleep and more about our collective identity as a people and a society. Organizing for justice, …

Christian Feminist Conception Of Justice, Laura A. Stivers

Laura Stivers

The Judeo-Christian tradition testifies to a God that cries out, demanding that justice "roll down like waters, righteousness like an ever-flowing stream" (Amos 5:24). Christians agree that being advocates for justice is critical to the Christian witness. And yet one need not look widely to see that Christians disagree about what social justice entails. What does justice have to do with healthcare reform, illegal immigration, and same-sex marriage? Should Christians support tax policies that effectively require wealthy individuals to fund programs that benefit the poor? Does justice require that we acknowledge and address the inequalities borne out of histories of …

aura Stivers, professor of ethics at Dominican University of California, recently investigated the issue of homelessness from a Christian perspective. The result was her new book Disrupting Homelessness: Alternative Christian Approaches. She shared her thoughts on how churches and individual Christians might approach homelessness on a systematic level based on biblical understandings of hospitality and justice.

Laura Stivers

Dr. Laura Stivers, Dean, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and former Associate Professor of Ethics believes homelessness is a preventable problem in the United States. The solution begins with education about the root causes of homelessness, but the political will to change social policies that create inequality and poverty also will be necessary.

Disrupting Homelessness : Alternative Christian Approaches, Laura A. Stivers

Laura Stivers

Disrupting Homelessness unmasks the futile assumptions of our present approaches to homelessness and suggests ways in which Christians and Christian communities can create a prophetic social movement to end poverty and homelessness. The American dream, as conveyed by the media, includes owning a home. Increasingly, people are homeless or precariously housed because of joblessness, foreclosure, or dislocation. Ecclesial responses to homelessness and housing vary. Some Christian organizations focus on fixing the person and the behaviors that contribute to homelessness. Others promote home ownership for low income households. Employing disruptive Christian ethics, Laura Stivers criticizes both approaches, outlines an advocacy approach …

A Sense Of Place In A Globalized World: Place-Based Organizing For Corporate Accountability, Laura Stivers

Laura Stivers

An emphasis on labor mobility as well as the expendability people and the environment in late-stage capitalism prompts my exploration of rootedness to place as one value that can inform how we more justly construct our economies. I argue that rootedness to place is important for many people, while also noting the dangers of romanticizing the notion of place and/or using it to justify exclusion or oppression. In this essay, I theologically reflect on our connections to both ecological and human communities of a place, and argue that these connections should be guided by justice. Then I show how communities …
