The Art Of Aidagara: Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Quest For An Ontology Of Social Existence In Watsuji Tetsurō’S Rinrigaku, James Shields
Faculty Journal Articles
This paper provides an analysis of the key term aidagara (“betweenness”) in the philosophical ethics of Watsuji Tetsurō (1889-1960), in response to and in light of the recent movement in Japanese Buddhist studies known as “Critical Buddhism.” The Critical Buddhist call for a turn away from “topical” or intuitionist thinking and towards (properly Buddhist) “critical” thinking, while problematic in its bipolarity, raises the important issue of the place of “reason” versus “intuition” in Japanese Buddhist ethics. In this paper, a comparison of Watsuji’s “ontological quest” with that of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), Watsuji’s primary Western source and foil, is followed by …
Isaiah’S Promise Of The Restoration Of Zion And Its Canonical Development, Gary E. Yates
Isaiah’S Promise Of The Restoration Of Zion And Its Canonical Development, Gary E. Yates
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
For nearly three millennia, Isaiah’s prophecies of a peaceful kingdom centered in Zion have captured the human imagination and expressed the longings of the human heart. 1 These prophecies have also had a major influence in shaping the Christian vision of the kingdom reign of Jesus as Messiah and Lord.2 The purpose of this study is to examine the significance of Isaiah’s prophecies concerning the transformation of Zion from a canonical perspective. This study will set forth the meaning of Isaiah’s Zion prophecies in their historical context with sensitivity to the conventions of prophetic language and will then explore how …

The Calling Of Nursing, Christoffer H. Grundmann
The Calling Of Nursing, Christoffer H. Grundmann
Theology Faculty Presentations
(excerpt) "Baffled by the broad variety and diversity of nursing and unable to discover one single common thread of thought and discussion in the literature, I got desperate and finally turned to Dean Brown for help, hoping to get some viable direction. And, indeed, I did, yet of course not the way I expected. When I asked her if she would be so kind as to name me the standard instruction textbook used for nursing education and practice, she unhesitatingly replied: 'There isn’t one. Because there are so many content areas in nursing, there is no one text that is …

Guided By Your Secret Life, Homer Massey
Guided By Your Secret Life, Homer Massey
Homer Massey
The soul may be thought of as that part of the personality that processes an individual’s highest values. Humanly this may also be thought of as the conscience, an integral part of the soul. This short essay suggests that a Christian has a wonderful secret life within him that must be managed to help him through the day-to-day challenges of life.

Elijah Baker 1742-1798, Homer Massey

A Baptist preacher is imprisoned and his case eventually dismissed. But rather than gaining his freedom he was put on a ship with orders to take him anywhere but America. He was literally "shanghaied" for the Lord.

What Must Be Done? Depaul As Sustainable Learning Community, Scott Kelley
Mission and Ministry Publications
In light of the challenges we face as human beings on a planet that is increasingly hot, flat, and crowded, we must revisit what it means to be an institution of higher education. Students exposed from a young age to concerns about social issues and the environment are looking for educational opportunities that will enable them to pursue meaningful careers to address them. As a leading educational institution in Chicago, DePaul has the opportunity to further implement its mission to educate members of all sectors of society in sustainable practices for our changing times. Living up to the motto it …

God's Activity In Today's World: A Review Essay On Kingdom Triangle, Gary R. Habermas
God's Activity In Today's World: A Review Essay On Kingdom Triangle, Gary R. Habermas
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
In this review essay, I consider J. P. Moreland's Kingdom Triangle as a recent example that takes seriously the incursion of God's Kingdom into the human realm. Among other things, Moreland's book helpfully provides some needed leadership and modeling for Christian philosophers as we reflect upon what it means to know and indeed experience first-hand the supernatural in-breaking of God's power. Moreland's approach locates the experience of God's miraculous activity within the panoply of the Christian knowledge tradition and alongside what it means for Christ to be formed in our interior. I conclude with some of my own research examples …

The Religious Other As Neighbor, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.
The Religious Other As Neighbor, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.
Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.
Many stories are told about antagonism between Christians and Jews, especially in countries with a large Jewish minority. The history of persecution should be told along with the lessons learned for our time. A brief review of examples whose participants were neighbors, either in reality or in principle, may be instructive. This paper will move through the centuries in a rapid survey, recalling friendly contacts or benign exchanges between Christians and Jews.

Medicine As Friendship With God: Anointing The Sick As A Theological Hermeneutic, M. Therese Lysaught
Medicine As Friendship With God: Anointing The Sick As A Theological Hermeneutic, M. Therese Lysaught
Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
A theological bioethics needs, first, a theological politics. The thesis of this essay rests on the claim that the contours of a theological politics are found in the nature of sacramental practices. More specifically, a theological politics of medicine is found in the sacramental practice of anointing of the sick. Anointing provides a radically theological hermeneutic—a theologically robust vision for interpreting medicine that, if enacted, can powerfully make real God's work in the world. Such a vision is embodied in one particular twentieth-century exemplar—the organization called Partners In Health (PIH) and its cofounder, Paul Farmer. Farmer and PIH, I argue, …
Augustine And Corruption, Peter Iver Kaufman
Augustine And Corruption, Peter Iver Kaufman
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Augustine's political thought or, as it is often called, political theology is a matter of considerable dispute. 'Augustine and Corruption' approaches that dispute by examining the evidence that Ramsay MacMullen presented to substantiate his observation that Augustine 'approved of' corruption. I read that evidence differently and use Augustine's remarks about bribes paid to court clerks, schemes to defraud philanthropists, and tax evasion to support what has been aptly called 'a minimalist' interpretation of his political expectations.
