The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde May 2000

The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde

Michael Budde

The question, "What does it mean to be 'the church'?" has always been among the most controversial and of vital concern to political, economic, and ecclesial leaders alike. How it is answered influences whether Christianity will be a force for legitimating or subverting existing secular relations of power, influence, and privilege. The Church as Counterculture enters the debates on Christian identity, purpose, and organization by calling for the churches to reclaim their roles as "communities of disciples"-distinct and distinctive groups formed by the priorities and practices of Jesus-to constitute a countercultural reality and challenge to secular society and existing power …

Invisible Lines Of Connection: Sacred Stories Of The Ordinary, Lawrence Kushner

Richard L. Horwitz Lecture on Ethics

Lawrence Kushner has served as Rabbi of Congregational Beth El in Sudbury, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, for the past 27 years and is widely regarded as one of the most creative religious writers in America. Through his lectures, articles and ten books, he has helped shape the present agenda for personal and institutional spiritual renewal.

He originated the concept of synagogue havurot, family fellowship groups, led his congregants to publish their own prayerbook, V'Tahaer Libenu (Purify Our Hearts), the first gender-neutral liturgy ever written, and has conducted over seventy-five kalla weekends for personal religious growth. He was the …

Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough Mar 2000

Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Publications & Presentations

Science and technology are frequently confused. This essay points out the bases for this confusion and then focuses on a basic distinction, namely, that whereas science brings us information that we have little choice but to absorb and reflect upon, technology is something that humans elect to do and, hence, can also elect not to do. It is proposed that technological ethics are most cogently undertaken with scientific understanding as the linchpin and religious/artistic sensibilities as the muse.

The Problem Of Religion, Violence, And Peace: An Uneasy Trilogy, David L. Coppola Jan 2000

The Problem Of Religion, Violence, And Peace: An Uneasy Trilogy, David L. Coppola

SHU Faculty Publications

Drawing primarily on Jewish, Christian, and Islamic texts, as well as on philosophical and sociological concepts, I will examine religion and its relationship to violence from three distinct, but related perspectives; namely, that 1) religion is directly linked with violence; 2) religion functions as one among many factors that influence violence; and 3) religions are unwilling participants in the practice of violence. This essay begins by setting a context for the study of religion, violence, and peace, followed by a presentation of the three perspectives mentioned above, concluding with possibilities for the study and practice of future peace-making.

The Passover Of Christ: 'Do [You] This In Remembrance Of Me.' A Systematic Description Of Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anabaptist, And Lutheran Theology And Ethics, Oscar Carvajal Romero

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

As a way of abstract, this paper presents a study of the last meal performed by Jesus with his disciples before his death and its commandment. With a systematic approach and a descriptive style, it explores the theological and ethical positions given by four Christian traditions: namely, Orthodox, Roman Catholic. Anabaptist, and Lutheran, to Jesus’ commandment: “Do [you] this in remembrance of me." The thesis in this paper has four parts, first, that the command has four aspects: subjective, objective, subjunctive, and genitive. Second, that each Christian tradition named above have emphasized one aspect over the others arriving to different …
