Sister Helen Prejean And The Death Penalty: Decades Of Fighting Capital Punishment, University Marketing And Communications, Helen Prejean
DePaul Download
Sister Helen Prejean has dedicated her life to opposing the death penalty after she witnessed an execution in her home state of Louisiana. Her efforts have sparked a national dialogue on capital punishment and she has helped shape the Catholic Church’s position on the topic. In 2011, she donated her personal archives to the university to help the DePaul community continue to learn from her work. On this episode of DePaul Download, Sister Helen talks about life’s work and what keeps her going.

Vincentian Pragmatism: Toward A Method For Systemic Change, Scott Kelley
Vincentian Pragmatism: Toward A Method For Systemic Change, Scott Kelley
Mission and Ministry Publications
When Pope John Paul II addressed the General Assembly of the Congregation of the Mission in 1986, he encouraged the Assembly to “search out more than ever, with boldness, humility and skill, the causes of poverty and encourage short and long term solutions; adaptable and effective concrete solutions.” Building from Vincentian heritage and the wisdom of the Vincentian family, this paper uses Pragmatic Inquiry to construct a method - Vincentian Pragmatism - that will foster the kinds of systemic change that Pope John Paul II envisioned.

Becoming The New Operating System, Scott Kelley

Like their non-religious counterparts, institutions of Catholic higher education are becoming more interested in the notion of sustainability. Much more than merely "greening" their campuses, however, Catholic colleges and universities have the opportunity to become a living laboratory for the "new operating system" that environmentalists like Paul Hawken are demanding.
Subsidiarity: Challenging The Top Down Bias, Scott Kelley
Subsidiarity: Challenging The Top Down Bias, Scott Kelley

Global poverty has received significant attention in the past decade, particularly after the adoption of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals in 2002. Commentators and ethicists like Peter Singer have long held that the wealthy of the world have an obligation to help the poor. While the sentiments may be positive, there are real harms that have come from this kind of top down thinking. Subsidiarity, to the contrary, is a much more realistic and morally tenable approach to global poverty.

What Must Be Done? Depaul As Sustainable Learning Community, Scott Kelley
Mission and Ministry Publications
In light of the challenges we face as human beings on a planet that is increasingly hot, flat, and crowded, we must revisit what it means to be an institution of higher education. Students exposed from a young age to concerns about social issues and the environment are looking for educational opportunities that will enable them to pursue meaningful careers to address them. As a leading educational institution in Chicago, DePaul has the opportunity to further implement its mission to educate members of all sectors of society in sustainable practices for our changing times. Living up to the motto it …
Reconsidering The Common Good In A Business Context, Thomas W. O'Brien
Reconsidering The Common Good In A Business Context, Thomas W. O'Brien
Thomas W O'Brien
In our contemporary post-modern context, it has become increasingly awkward to talk about a good that is shared by all. This is particularly true in the context of mammoth multi-national corporations operating in global markets. Nevertheless, it is precisely some of these same enormous, aggrandizing forces that have given rise to recent corporate scandals. These, in turn, raise questions about ethical systems that are focused too myopically on self-interest, or the interest of specific groups, locations or cultures. The obvious traditional alternative to moral bellybutton gazing is the common good, which challenges the modern business enterprise to realize non-instrumental values …

In early November of 2007 DePaul University hosted the 14th annual International Vincentian Business Ethics conference which addressed the topic of globalization and poverty. As a Catholic, Vincentian University it is quite fitting that DePaul would host such a conference. But, poverty studies are nothing new to many universities; in fact Chicago is home to the Joint Center for Poverty Research, a collaborative endeavor between Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, which has been examining pover- ty-related issues since 1996. if some, or even many, universities engage in poverty studies, is there anything unique about such endeavors at a …

Formal Existential Ethics In The Thought Of Bernard Lonergan And Ignatius Of Loyola, Scott Kelley
Formal Existential Ethics In The Thought Of Bernard Lonergan And Ignatius Of Loyola, Scott Kelley
Mission and Ministry Publications
The underlying, operative question of my entire project concerns the formal relationship of ‘spirituality’ to ethics. I contend that spiritual experience is normative for ethics: one’s elected worldview orders feeling-values according to an appropriated scale of preference. To analyze the normative influence of spirituality on feeling-values, I begin by defining the term spirituality and then use an article written by Karl Rahner as a framework for identifying a particular form of ethics. I then examine the thought of Bernard Lonergan for an adequate account of subjectivity. With a viable anthropology in place, I examine Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises to …

Utopia In The Midst Of Oppression? A Reconsideration Of Guaraní/Jesuit Communities In Seventeenth And Eighteenth Century Paraguay, Thomas W. O'Brien
Thomas W O'Brien
This essay is an examination of the 17th–18th century Guaraní/Jesuit communities in Paraguay, which were exalted as utopias by countless witnesses. These authors have stressed the long periods of peaceful coexistence, the rich and fruitful syncretistic melding cultures, the successful and bountiful economic life, and the relative justice. Nevertheless, controversy has always marked these communities because many believe that the Jesuit/Guaraní missions are best understood as integral to the larger oppressive imposition of European polity and culture. These authors stress evidence of condescending paternalism, structural inequality, restricted freedom of choice, and the erosion of a pristine Guaraní culture. This essay …
