Definitively Lutheran?: An Exploration Of Definitive Lutheran Characteristics In Higher Education, John Eggen
Definitively Lutheran?: An Exploration Of Definitive Lutheran Characteristics In Higher Education, John Eggen
Doctor of Ministry Theses
This mixed-method, exploratory case study explores definitively Lutheran practices in higher education. This research explores emerging themes from Intersections and other publications reflecting upon institutional religious identity. This research explores the student experiences, expectations, and perspectives through a student survey and the perspectives of institutional leadership through qualitative research. It evaluates definitive characteristics of Lutheran higher education through the lenses of adaptive change, organizational theory, open systems theory, Lutheran identity, vocation, and exploring an understanding of missional, cruciform, perichoretic communities from the Pauline epistles. The results reveal limited statistically significant difference among students based on religious affiliation, but a divergent …
Lutheran Higher Education In A Secular Age: Religious Identity And Mission At Elca Colleges And Universities, Brian A.F. Beckstrom
Lutheran Higher Education In A Secular Age: Religious Identity And Mission At Elca Colleges And Universities, Brian A.F. Beckstrom
Doctor of Ministry Theses
This exploratory mixed methods case study examined the relationship between espoused and perceived religious identity and mission at five colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America through the lenses of secularization theory, missional leadership, ecclesiology, Trinitarian theology, adaptive leadership, and challenges in the higher education market. Results indicated that humanism is the primary means of describing religious identity and mission at ELCA schools and there are widely varying assumptions about what it means to be a college or university of the church. Advocates and skeptics of the institution’s religious identity and mission interpret reality through the lens …

Not Quite Calvinist: Cyril Lucaris A Reconsideration Of His Life And Beliefs, Stephanie Falkowski
Not Quite Calvinist: Cyril Lucaris A Reconsideration Of His Life And Beliefs, Stephanie Falkowski
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Cyril Lucaris is primarily remembered as an Eastern Orthodox patriarch who held Calvinist beliefs. A more nuanced view is gained from often ignored facets of his life and times, the extant letters he wrote, and in recognition of various possible interpretations of the existing evidence. This paper, challenging common misconceptions about Lucaris, explores three main areas relevant to this discussion: his biographical influences, his beliefs and their development, and his own intentions and self-understanding of his relationships with Protestants. The result shows a man engaged in a world influenced by Western theological developments from the Reformation, fostering friendships as he …

Anthony Benezet's (1713-1784) Revolutionary Rhetoric: Slavery And Sentimentalism In Quaker Political Remonstrance, Jon R. Kershner
Quaker Religious Thought
Following the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), many Britons resented the human and financial cost of the war and looked to the colonies for partial reimbursement. To this end, Britain passed the Stamp Act in 1765, which levied a tax on paper, and beginning in 1767, the Townsend Act, which taxed imported tea, lead, and other products. Colonial printing presses quickly decried these taxes as unfair and rebuked the general economic interference in colonial life by lawmakers in London. The American Patriots employed a rhetoric of virtue, natural rights, and liberty to enflame the popular colonial conscience with the conviction that …
Review Of Daniel P. Coleman, Presence And Process: A Path Toward Transformative Faith And Inclusive Community, Jeffrey Dudiak
Review Of Daniel P. Coleman, Presence And Process: A Path Toward Transformative Faith And Inclusive Community, Jeffrey Dudiak
Quaker Religious Thought
Daniel P. Coleman is an evangelical Friend who in this book pushes hard for an agenda that many liberal Friends will heartily embrace, though I suspect to the discomfort of the bulk of his fellow evangelicals. Based on his own experience at the nexus of Christianity, Quakerism, and Buddhist inspired meditative practices, his thesis, in short, is that the heart of true religion is a mystical, pre-rational (and thus pre-discursive) connection with Reality (perhaps a synonym for “God”), which is the essence of all religions once the superficial, thought-based particularities of doctrine are stripped away. His hope for the revival …
Beyond The Bureaucracy: The True & Proper Purpose Of Quaker Yearly Meetings In The 21st Century, Robin Mohr
Beyond The Bureaucracy: The True & Proper Purpose Of Quaker Yearly Meetings In The 21st Century, Robin Mohr
Quaker Religious Thought
In short, the true and proper purpose of Quaker yearly meetings, in all times and in all places, is to help Friends to do God’s will.
This paper is based on a comparison between a passage in Brian Drayton’s and Bill Taber’s book, A Language for the Inward Landscape held up against the written statements of purpose in the contemporary books of Faith and Practice from thirty yearly meetings. Do they agree or do they contradict each other? This paper argues that they are in harmony.
After Same-Sex Marriage: Emerging Quaker Perspectives On Further Questions About Sexuality And Gender, Rhiannon Grant
After Same-Sex Marriage: Emerging Quaker Perspectives On Further Questions About Sexuality And Gender, Rhiannon Grant
Quaker Religious Thought
This paper was first presented at the American Academy of Religion in Boston in 2017. What follows incorporates some responses to questions which were asked there. In particular, it seems appropriate to preface the main text with a personal comment. The respondent for the session, Sa’ed Atshan, asked about the speakers’ relationships to Quakerism, and I answered that although in this paper I say that I am describing possible arguments rather than real positions taken by Quakers, I am a Quaker and I would—at the time of writing!— make points something like these if asked to describe my personal understanding. …

Review Of David Johnson, Jesus, Christ And Servant Of God: Meditations On The Gospel According To John, Lorraine Watson
Review Of David Johnson, Jesus, Christ And Servant Of God: Meditations On The Gospel According To John, Lorraine Watson
Quaker Religious Thought
The Gospel of John is often referred to as the Quaker Gospel. So it is with no surprise that David Johnson, a Quaker from Australia, chose to spend time with this particular book. Prior to writing, or even doing serious study on the Gospel of John, David Johnson meditated on the Gospel over an eight-month period, spending time with the text and allowing it to speak directly to his spirit. He writes about the deeper meaning opened to him, “This experience convinced me that the gospel is not just a record of Jesus’ ministry; it is also a consummate guide …

Nurturing Church As A Biblical Strategy To Recover A Healthy Church Within South Korean Churches, Jinwook Kang
Nurturing Church As A Biblical Strategy To Recover A Healthy Church Within South Korean Churches, Jinwook Kang
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There are many churches in South Korea, but not too many healthy churches. A healthy church should have a proof of early church from the Acts. It is impossible to be a healthy church only with a number of people, buildings, programs, and new church planting. The goal of this thesis is to suggest healthy biblical church using early church as a model and propose strategy. This study will first take a look at what is a healthy biblical church. A healthy biblical church is a nurturing church. Conventional church has a lot of nurturing programs, but this thesis compares …
Ellen White And Subordination Within The Trinity, Nathaniel Robert Gibbs
Ellen White And Subordination Within The Trinity, Nathaniel Robert Gibbs
Seminary Scholarship Symposium
The Seventh-day Adventist Church has been engaged in a debate about the role of women in ministry, especially as it concerns ordination. While engaging in this debate, some have used the doctrine of Trinity to support their understanding of the different roles in gender. Specifically, the subordination of Jesus to the Father as evidence of a correlation with the subordination of women to men. In order to find support for the way some believe ministry should be practiced, they have turned to the writings of Ellen White. They have attempted to support a subordinationism within the Trinity with her writings. …
1 Timothy 3: Who Can Be An Officer? An Exegetical And Historical Study, Jose N. Briones
1 Timothy 3: Who Can Be An Officer? An Exegetical And Historical Study, Jose N. Briones
Seminary Scholarship Symposium
Who is able to hold the offices of the church, deacons and elders, within the Seventh-day Adventist Church? The question of gender roles and the church’s understanding of who is sanctioned by the Scriptures to aspire to that office is a revolving matter today. The topic has been around in discussion for about 40 years now without a final answer within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Therefore, it is the aim of this paper to focus on the consistency of the Seventh-day Adventist Church with its own statements and policies, and the text of 1 Timothy 3. Moreover, it will propose …
