It is the purpose of this study to (1) review very briefly the experience of the believers who expected Christ to return in the year 1844; (2) to examine the teaching which grew out of this experience that has come to be known as "the cleansing of the sanctuary," and (3) primarily to discover, if possible, any additional meaning or application this teaching may hold at this time for the Seventh-day Adventist denomination and consequently for the entire world.

The Problem

Statement of the problem. It is the purpose of this study (1) to lay a groundwork for a correct present understanding of the seven churches by examining representative historical interpretations; (2) to determine its place in the Advent Awakening culminating in the 1844 movement; (3) to study the opinions of early Sabbath-keeping Adventists on the meaning of this prophecy; (4) and above all, to ascertain, if possible, its significance to Seventh-day Adventists today.

Music was crucially important for early Adventists it was the place where beliefs could find musical expression in corporate worship settings. Accordingly, the first hardcover book published by James White was a hymnal in 1849. However, it was a very small book only containing 53 hymns accordingly more hymn books would soon follow. This hymnbook published in 1852 contained not only 139 hymns but also a supplement that contained an additional 38.

In 1848 Ellen White received a vision at the home of Otis Nichols in Dorchester MS. In it she was shown that James White should begin printing a little paper that would be small at first but would grow to be like streams of light going around the world. In July 1849 James White published the first edition of Present Truth which would continue under that name for about year and be renamed in November of 1850.
